[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ had two muadhins, Bilal and Ibn Umm Maktum. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Bilal gives the adhan at night, then continue eating and drinking until you hear the adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum." Al-Qasim said, "There was nothing between them except this one would descend while the other ascends."  

الدارمي:١٢٢٧أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ أَنْبَأَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَعَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُؤَذِّنَانِ بِلَالٌ وَابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ بِلَالًا يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى تَسْمَعُوا أَذَانَ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ» فَقَالَ الْقَاسِمُ وَمَا كَانَ بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا أَنْ يَنْزِلَ هَذَا وَيَرْقَى هَذَا

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Bilal pronounces the Adhan when it is still night (before dawn), so eat and drink till the next Adhan is pronounced (or till you hear Ibn Um Maktum's Adhan)." Ibn Um Maktum was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan till he was told that it was dawn.

Recommendation to eat suhur until the adhan of Fajr

There were to callers of adhan for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Bilal and Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Bilal announces the adhan at night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum announces adhan." And he ˹the narrator˺ said: "The ˹period˺ between their ˹adhans˺ was not more than this that one climbing down ˹from the place of adhan˺ and the other one climbing up."

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Bilal calls the Adhan during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the Adhan." She said: "And there was no more between than the time it takes for one to come down and the other to go up."

[Machine] I heard my aunt, who had performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Bilal gives the call to prayer at night, so keep eating and drinking until Bilal or Ibn Umm Maktum gives the call to prayer." And he used to raise his voice for this (the adhan) and lower it for that (the iqamah), so we would hold onto him just as you are until we eat our pre-dawn meal.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Bilal calls the Adhan at night, so continue eating and drinking until the Adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum." And it is claimed that when Bilal went down (to call the Adhan), Ibn Umm Maktum would call the Adhan.  

الطبراني:١٣٣٧٩حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْأَبَّارُ ثنا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ بِلَالًا يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يُؤَذِّنَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ» وَزَعَمَ أَنَّ بِلَالًا كَانَ يُؤَذِّنُ فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِلَالٌ أَذَّنَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , had two mu'adhins (callers to prayer), Bilal and Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Indeed, Bilal calls the adhan at night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum calls the adhan." There was nothing between them except the time for one to descend and the other to ascend the minaret. And with this chain of narration, from Ubaid Allah, from Al-Qasim, from Aisha, from the Prophet, ﷺ , the statement is similar.

We used to detain Ibn Umm Maktum from the call to prayer, and we would say, 'Stay as you are until we eat our pre-dawn meal (Suhoor),' and there was nothing between their calls except for him descending while the other ascends, like this."  

البيهقي:١٧٩١حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَمَّتِي أُنَيْسَةُ قَالَتْ كَانَ بِلَالٌ وَابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ يُؤَذِّنَانِ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ

رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ بِلَالًا يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يُؤَذِّنَ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَكُنَّا نَحْبِسُ ابْنَ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ عَنِ الْأَذَانِ فَنَقُولُ كَمَا أَنْتَ حَتَّى نَتَسَحَّرَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ أَذَانِهِمَا إِلَّا أَنْ يَنْزِلَ هَذَا وَيَصْعَدَ هَذَا هَكَذَا
