Make a profession of it that there is no god but Allah and I will bear testimony (of your being a Muslim) on the Day of judgment. He (Abu Talib) said: Were it not the fear of the Quraysh blaming me (and) saying that it was the fear of (approaching death) that induced me to do so, I would have certainly delighted your eyes. It was then that Allah revealed: " Verily thou canst not guide to the right path whom thou lovest. And it is Allah Who guideth whom He will and He knoweth best who are the guided" (xxviii-56).

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَمِّهِ قُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ لَكَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنْ تُعَيِّرَنِي قُرَيْشٌ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا حَمَلَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ الْجَزَعُ لأَقْرَرْتُ بِهَا عَيْنَكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ { إِنَّكَ لاَ تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ}

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his uncle: 'Say La Ilaha Illallah and I may bear witness with that, on your behalf, on the Day of Judgement.' So he said: 'If it weren't that the Quraish would insult me (saying): "He only said it out of fright" then I would delight your eyes.' Then Allah the Mighty and Sublime revealed: Verily, you guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills (28:56)."

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حَازِمٍ الأَشْجَعِيُّ هُوَ كُوفِيٌّ اسْمُهُ سَلْمَانُ مَوْلَى عَزَّةَ الأَشْجَعِيَّةِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعَمِّهِ قُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدْ لَكَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَقَالَ لَوْلاَ أَنْ تُعَيِّرَنِي بِهَا قُرَيْشٌ أَنَّمَا يَحْمِلُهُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَزَعُ لأَقْرَرْتُ بِهَا عَيْنَكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ (إنَّكَ لاَ تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ )

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his uncle, "Say: There is no god except Allah, I testify for you with it before Allah on the Day of Judgment." He (his uncle) said, "If it were not for the fact that the Quraish would accuse me of seeking praise, I would have declared it for your sake." He (the Messenger of Allah) said to him, "Then Allah revealed: 'Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.' " [Surah Al-Qasas, verse 56]

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعَمِّهِ قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ أَشْهَدْ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ قَالَ لَوْلَا أَنْ تُعَيِّرَنِيقُرَيْشٌ لَأَقْرَرْتُ عَيْنَكَ بِهَا قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ} [القصص56]

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Talib when death came to him, "Say: There is no god but Allah, and I will intercede for you with it on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Talib said, "O son of my brother, if it were not for fear of the Quraysh's reproach, I would have opened my eyes to it." Then the verse was revealed: "Indeed, you do not guide whom you like."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِأَبِي طَالِبٍ حِينَ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ «قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْفَعْ لَكَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ» قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي لَوْلَا أَنْ تُعَيِّرَنِيَ قُرَيْشٌ لَأَقْرَرْتُ عَيْنَيْكَ بِهَا فَنَزَلَتْ {إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ}
