قَالَ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا ﷺ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَبَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أُسَمِّيَ الثَّالِثَ لَسَمَّيْتُهُ

ʿAli ؓ said: The best of this ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr, and after Abu Bakr it is ‘Umar ؓ , and if I wanted to tell you of the third one, I could do so.

أحمد:٨٣٦ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ قَالَ

عَلِيٌّ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَبَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ لَفَعَلْتُ

ahmad:879 – Yaḥyá b. Ādam > Mālik b. Mighwal > Ḥabīb b. Abū Thābit > ʿAbd Khayr > ʿAlī W > al-Shaʿbī > Abū Juḥayfah > ʿAlī W > ʿAwn b. Abū Juḥayfah from his father > ʿAlī

The best of this ummah after its Prophet ﷺ is Abu Bakr, the best of it after Abu Bakr is ʿUmar; and if I wanted, I could name the third one.

أحمد:٨٧٩ – حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وعَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وعَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَخَيْرُهَا بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ سَمَّيْتُ الثَّالِثَ

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ

الطبراني:١٧٧ – حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ قَالَ

«أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا ﷺ؟» قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ «أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ؟» قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ «عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ لَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ»
