One who starts a good practice (Sunnah Hasanah) will earn the reward of those who follow him in that practice

We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early part of the day. He said: Then there came to him some people who were barefoot and nearly naked, wearing patched cloaks or woolen mantles, with swords slung over their shoulders. Most of them were from ˹the tribe of˺ Mudar, rather, all of them were from Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed because of the poverty he saw upon them. He went in, then came out, and he ordered Bilal, who called the adhan and the iqamah. He then led the prayer, and then delivered a sermon.

He said: “O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul…” to the end of the verse: “Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.” (Nisa 4:1) And he recited the verse in Surat al-Hashr: “Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow; and fear Allah.” (Hashr 59:18)  Then he said: “Let a man give charity from his dinar, from his dirham, from his clothing, from a sa‘ of his wheat, from a sa‘ of his dates,” until he said: “Even if it is with half a date.”

Then a man from the Ansar came with a bundle that his hand could scarcely carry, rather, it could not carry it. Then the people followed one after another until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, until I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ glowing as if it were gilded. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever introduces in Islam a 'sunnah hasanah' (good practice) will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without any of their rewards being diminished in the least. And whoever introduces in Islam a bad practice will bear its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without any of their burdens being diminished in the least.”

كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي صَدْرِ النَّهَارِ، قَالَ فَجَاءَهُ قَوْمٌ حُفَاةٌ عُرَاةٌ مُجْتَابِي النِّمَارِ أَوِ الْعَبَاءِ مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ، عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ، فَتَمَعَّرَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِمَا رَأَى بِهِمْ مِنَ الْفَاقَةِ، فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَأَمَرَ بِلاَلاً فَأَذَّنَ وَأَقَامَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ خَطَبَ: 

فَقَالَ: «{ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ }» إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ «{ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا }»، وَالآيَةَ الَّتِي فِي الْحَشْرِ «{ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ }، تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ مِنْ دِرْهَمِهِ مِنْ ثَوْبِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ بُرِّهِ مِنْ صَاعِ تَمْرِهِ» حَتَّى قَالَ «وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ»، 

قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِصُرَّةٍ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ تَعْجِزُ عَنْهَا، بَلْ قَدْ عَجَزَتْ، قَالَ ثُمَّ تَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ كَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَلَهُ أَجْرُهَا، وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا بَعْدَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَىْءٌ، وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَىْءٌ».

Most of them, may all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah changed when he saw them in poverty. He went in (to his house) then he came out and ordered Bilah to call the Adhan and then the Iqamah. He (the Prophet) prayed, tjem je addressed te,, (reciting the Verses): 'O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him(Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women: and fear Allah through Whom you demand (your mutual right), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever and All-Watcher over you.' [1] and: 'Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow,' [2] Then they gave in charity, some giving a Dinar, others a Dirham, or a garment, or a Sa' of wheat or, a Sa' of dates, until he said: 'Even half a date.' A man from among the Ansar came with a bag of money which his hands could hardly lift. The people followed one another (in giving charity) until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, and I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah shining like gold (with joy). The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever sets a good precedent in Islam, he will have the reward for that, and the reward of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever sets an evil precedent in Islam, he will have a burden of sin for that, and the burden of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest."'

كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي صَدْرِ النَّهَارِ فَجَاءَ قَوْمٌ عُرَاةً حُفَاةً مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِمَا رَأَى بِهِمْ مِنَ الْفَاقَةِ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَمَرَ بِلاَلاً فَأَذَّنَ فَأَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ خَطَبَ فَقَالَ { يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالاً كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالأَرْحَامَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا } وَ { اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ } تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ مِنْ دِرْهَمِهِ مِنْ ثَوْبِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ بُرِّهِ مِنْ صَاعِ تَمْرِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِصُرَّةٍ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ تُعْجِزُ عَنْهَا بَلْ قَدْ عَجَزَتْ ثُمَّ تَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ كَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَلَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الإِسْلاَمِ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً فَعَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْئًا

While we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early hours of the morning, some people came there (who) were barefooted, naked, wearing striped woollen clothes, or cloaks, with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, nay, all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then entered (his house) and came out and commanded Bilal (to pronounce Adhan). He pronounced Adhan and Iqima, and he (the Holy Prophet) observed prayer (along with his Companion) and then addressed (them reciting verses of the Holy Qur'an): '" 0 people, fear your Lord, Who created you from a single being" to the end of the verse," Allah is ever a Watcher over you" (iv. 1). (He then recited) a verse of Sura Hashr:" Fear Allah. and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow and fear Allah" (lix. 18). (Then the audience began to vie with one another in giving charity.) Some donated a dinar, others a dirham, still others clothes, some donated a sa' of wheat, some a sa' of dates; till he (the Holy Prophet) said: (Bring) even if it is half a date. Then a person from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely lift; in fact, they could not (lift). Then the people followed continuously, till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes, and I saw the face of the Messenger ﷺ glistening, like gold (on account of joy). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards; and he who sets in Islam an evil precedent, there is upon him the burden of that, and the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently, without any deduction from their burden. كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَدْرِ النَّهَارِ فَجَاءَ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ حُفَاةً عُرَاةً مُجْتَابِي النِّمَارِ عَلَيْهِمُ السُّيُوفُ وَالْعِبَاءُ فَقُلْتُ عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ فَرَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تَغَيَّرَ لَمَّا رَأَى بِهِمْ فَقَامَ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَذَّنَ وَأَقَامَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ وَخَطَبَ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ} الْآيَةَ قَرَأَهَا إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ} «تَصَدَّقَ امْرُؤٌ مِنْ دِرْهَمِهِ تَصَدَّقَ امْرُؤٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ تَمْرِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ شَعِيرِهِ مِنْ كَذَا مِنْ كَذَا» حَتَّى ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَقَّ تَمْرَةٍ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ بِصُرَّةٍ قَدْ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ تَعْجِزُ أَوْ قَدْ عَجَزَتْ قَالَ وَتَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ كَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ فَرَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ فَقَالَ «مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً صَالِحَةً كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ لَا يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا بَعْدَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ لَا يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ»

[Machine] I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day when a group of people came, and all of them were from Mudar. They were in need and carrying swords. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change when he saw their distress. He said, "O Bilal, hasten the prayer." After he prayed, he sat for a while and praised and glorified Allah, then he recited the verse, "Fear Allah, for whom you ask and your kin. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer." He then said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who gives charity from his dinars, dirhams, and dates to the point that his charity reaches the pit of a date." A man among the Ansar stood up with a cloak in his hand, and it seemed like his hand could not reach the outermost part of it, indicating that he had a lot of wealth. The people followed his example until they gathered two huge piles of food and clothing. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ light up with joy, as if it were a golden sun. When the charity was over, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, no one from my nation does a good deed that is followed by others after him except that he will have the reward of those who do it without their rewards being diminished in any way. And whoever introduces a bad innovation in Islam and is followed in it, he will bear the sin of it and the sin of those who do it after him without their sins being diminished in any way."

كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْضَ النَّهَارِ إِذْ جَاءَ نَاسٌ وَعَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ مُجْتَابِي النِّمَارِ مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَغَيَّرُ لَمَّا رَأَى بِهِمْ مِنَ الضُّرِّ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا بِلَالُ عَجِّلِ الصَّلَاةَ» فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَعَدَ قَعْدَةً فَحَمِدَ اللهَ ﷻ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ {اتَّقُوا اللهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا} «رَحِمَ اللهُ رَجُلًا تَصَدَّقَ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ وَدِرْهَمِهِ وَصَاعِ تَمْرِهِ» حَتَّى رَدَّ الصَّدَقَةَ إِلَى شَقِّ التَّمْرَةِ وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ قَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِصُرَّةٍ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ تَعْجِزُ عَنْهَا بَلْ عَجَزَتْ عَنْهَا لَا يَدْرِي أَذَهَبٌ أَمْ فِضَّةٌ ثُمَّ تَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى جَمَعُوا كَوْمَيْنِ ضَخْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ فَلَمَّا انْتَهَتِ الصَّدَقَةُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَسْتَنُّ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَيُعْمَلُ بِهَا بَعْدَهُ إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهُ وَمَثَلُ أَجْرِ الَّذِينَ اسْتَنَّوْا بِسُنَّتِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً فَعُمِلَ بِهَا بَعْدَهُ إِلَّا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهُ وَمِثْلُ أَوْزَارِ الَّذِينَ اسْتَنَّوْا بِسُنَّتِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ»

[Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ , then a group of people came to him wearing leopard-print garments and carrying swords. They did not have any armor or anything similar to it. They were all from Mudar, and all of them were affected by the famine. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw their effort, hardship, and hunger, his face changed. He entered his house and then went to the mosque to pray the noon prayer. After that, he went up a small pulpit and praised and glorified Allah. Then he said, "Indeed, Allah revealed in His Book from the beginning of the verse that says, 'O people, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul,' until the verse that says, 'O you who have believed, fear Allah and let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow,' until His saying, 'they are the successful ones.' Give charity before you cannot give. A man would give charity from his dinar, another from his dirham, another from his grain, and another from his dates, and do not belittle any kind of charity, even if it is half a date. Then a man from the Ansar stood up with a handful of silver, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted it while he was on the pulpit. The happiness was clear on his face. Then he said, 'Whoever establishes a good practice and others act upon it, he will get the reward of their actions without decreasing anything from their rewards. And whoever establishes an evil practice and others act upon it, he will bear the burden of their actions without decreasing anything from their burdens.' The people stood up and scattered. Some of them had a dinar, and some of them had a dirham, so they came together and divided it among themselves.

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَتَاهُ قَوْمٌ مُجْتَابِي النِّمَارِ مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِمْ آزُرٌ وَلَا شَيْءَ غَيْرَهَا عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا بِهِمْ مِنَ الْجَهْدِ وَالْعُرَى وَالْجُوعِ تَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ وَدَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ ثُمَّ رَاحَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ صَعِدَ مِنْبَرًا صَغِيرًا فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ أَنْزَلَ فِي كِتَابِهِ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ} تَصَدَّقُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ لَا تَصَدَّقُوا تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِرْهَمِهِ تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بُرِّهِ تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ تَمْرِهِ مِنْ شَعِيرِهِ لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ شَيْئًا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فِي كَفِّهِ صُرَّةٌ فَنَاوَلَهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَبَضَهَا فَعُرِفَ السُّرُورُ فِي وَجْهِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ سَنَّ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَعُمِلَ بِهَا كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَمِثْلُ أَجْرِ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا لَا يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ وَمَنْ سَنَّ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً فَعُمِلَ بِهَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا بَعْدَهُ لَا يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ» فَقَامَ النَّاسُ فَتَفَرَّقُوا فَمِنْ ذَا دِينَارٌ وَمِنْ ذَا دِرْهَمٌ فَاجْتَمَعَ فَقَسَمَهُ بَيْنَهُمْ

"While we were with the Messenger of Allah in the early hours of the morning, some people came who were naked and barefoot, with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, may all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah changed when he saw them in poverty. He went in (to his house) then he came out and ordered Bilah to call the Adhan and then the Iqamah. He (the Prophet) prayed, tjem je addressed te,, (reciting the Verses): 'O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him(Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women: and fear Allah through Whom you demand (your mutual right), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever and All-Watcher over you.' [1] and: 'Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow,' [2] Then they gave in charity, some giving a Dinar, others a Dirham, or a garment, or a Sa' of wheat or, a Sa' of dates, until he said: 'Even half a date.' A man from among the Ansar came with a bag of money which his hands could hardly lift. The people followed one another (in giving charity) until I saw two heaps of food and clothing, and I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah shining like gold (with joy). The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever sets a good precedent in Islam, he will have the reward for that, and the reward of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest. And whoever sets an evil precedent in Islam, he will have a burden of sin for that, and the burden of those who acted in accordance with it, without that detracting from their burden in the slightest."' كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَدْرِ النَّهَارِ فَجَاءَ قَوْمٌ عُرَاةً حُفَاةً مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِمَا رَأَى بِهِمْ مِنَ الْفَاقَةِ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَذَّنَ ثُمَّ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ خَطَبَ فَقَالَ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً وَاتَّقُوا اللهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا} [النساء 1] وَ {اتَّقُوا اللهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ} [الحشر 18] تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ مِنْ دَرَاهِمِهِ مِنْ ثَوْبِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ بُرِّهِ مِنْ صَاعِ تَمْرِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِصُرَّةٍ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ تَعْجِزُ عَنْهَا بَلْ قَدْ عَجَزَتْ ثُمَّ تَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ كَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَلَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْتَقِصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً سَيِّئَةً فَعَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ يَعْمَلُ بِهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْتَقِصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْئًا»

While we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early hours of the morning, some people came there (who) were barefooted, naked, wearing striped woollen clothes, or cloaks, with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, nay, all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then entered (his house) and came out and commanded Bilal (to pronounce Adhan). He pronounced Adhan and Iqima, and he (the Holy Prophet) observed prayer (along with his Companion) and then addressed (them reciting verses of the Holy Qur'an): '" 0 people, fear your Lord, Who created you from a single being" to the end of the verse," Allah is ever a Watcher over you" (iv. 1). (He then recited) a verse of Sura Hashr:" Fear Allah. and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow and fear Allah" (lix. 18). (Then the audience began to vie with one another in giving charity.) Some donated a dinar, others a dirham, still others clothes, some donated a sa' of wheat, some a sa' of dates; till he (the Holy Prophet) said: (Bring) even if it is half a date. Then a person from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely lift; in fact, they could not (lift). Then the people followed continuously, till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes, and I saw the face of the Messenger ﷺ glistening, like gold (on account of joy). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards; and he who sets in Islam an evil precedent, there is upon him the burden of that, and the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently, without any deduction from their burden. كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جُلُوسًا فِي صَدْرِ النَّهَارِ فَجَاءَ قَوْمٌ حُفَاةٌ عُرَاةٌ مُجْتَابِي النِّمَارِ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَبَاءُ أَوْ قَالَ مُتَقَلِّدِي السُّيُوفِ عَامَّتُهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ بَلْ كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ مُضَرَ فَرَأَيْتُ وَجْهَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَغَيَّرُ لِمَا يَرَى بِهِمْ مِنَ الْفَاقَةِ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ فَخَطَبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ { يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ } [النساء 1] إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ } [الحشر 18] الْآيَةَ تَصَدَّقَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ دِينَارِهِ مِنْ دِرْهَمِهِ مِنْ ثَوْبِهِ مِنْ صَاعِ بُرِّهِ مِنْ صَاعِ تَمْرِهِ حَتَّى قَالَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ قَالَ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِصُرَّةٍ قَدْ كَادَتْ كَفُّهُ أَنْ تَعْجِزُ عَنْهَا بَلْ قَدْ عَجَزَتْ عَنْهَا فَدَفَعَهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَتَابَعَ النَّاسُ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ فَرَأَيْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَوْمَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَثِيَابٍ وَجَعَلَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَهَلَّلُ كَأَنَّهُ مُذْهَبَةٌ وَقَالَ مَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَّةً حَسَنَةً فَلَهُ أَجْرُهَا وَأَجْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُنْتَقَصَ مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْءٌ وَمَنْ سَنَّ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ سُنَةً سَيِّئَةً كَانَ عَلَيْهِ وِزْرُهَا وَوِزْرُ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يُنْتَقَصَ مِنْ أَوْزَارِهِمْ شَيْءٌ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ وَحَدِيثُ النَّضْرِ بِمَعْنَاهُ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ النَّضْرُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَبَاءُ
