"Make a public announcement about it for one year, if it is claimed then give it to him. Otherwise remember its sack, string, and its count. Then use it, and if its owner comes, give it to him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا وَإِلاَّ فَاعْرِفْ وِعَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِذَا جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا

He said: “Announce it for a year, then if someone describes it with its features, return it to him. If no one claims it, then remember the features of its leather bag and strap, and consume it (use it). Then if its owner comes along, give it to him.”

Make announcement of that for one year, but if it is not recognised (by the owner), then recognise its big and strap, then eat it; and if its owner comes, then give that to him. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Al-Dahhak b. Uthman with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words. (Using translation from Muslim 1722g)

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about lost property. He said, "Identify it for a year. If it is not identified, then identify its rope and container. Then consume it, but if its owner comes, give it back to him." [346] 5780 narrated by Harun bin Abdullah, narrated by Ibn Abi Fudayk and Abu Bakr Al-Hanafi, both narrated by Ad-Dhahak bin Uthman bin Jabir.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was asked about the stray animal, so he said: Define it for a year, then if it still remains unknown, define its look and its marks, and then consume it all. But if its owner comes, return it to him.

If not, then let them announce its description and features, and then they may consume it. If its owner comes afterward, they should return it to him.'"
