عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَخْبَرَنَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ؓ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيَغْنَمَ وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ فَأَيُّ هَذَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

A bedouin asked the Prophet, "A man may fight for the sake of booty, and another may fight so that he may be mentioned by the people, and a third may fight to show his position (i.e. bravery); which of these regarded as fighting in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who fights so that Allah's Word (i.e. Islam) should be superior, fights for Allah's Cause."
قَالَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ: الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلْمَغْنَمِ وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُذْكَرَ وَيُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ مَنْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: «مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهْوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ۔»
Fighting to elevate the Word of God is what is considered for His sake
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "A man fights for pride and haughtiness another fights for bravery, and another fights for showing off; which of these (cases) is in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The one who fights that Allah's Word (Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause."
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ حَمِيَّةً وَيُقَاتِلُ شَجَاعَةً وَيُقَاتِلُ رِيَاءً، فَأَىُّ ذَلِكَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: «مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهْوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ».
Messenger of Allah, one man fights fgr the spoils of war; another fights that he may be remembered, and another fights that he may see his (high) position (achieved as a result of his valour in fighting). Which of these is fighting in the cause of God? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who fights so that the word of Allah is exalted is fighting in the way of Allah.

Abu Musa said “A beduoin came to the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ and said “One man fights for reputation, one fights for being praised, one fights for booty and one for his place to be seen. (Which of them is in Allaah’s path?)”. The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ replied “The one who fights that Allaah’s word may have pre-eminence is in Allaah’s path.”
أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا جَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُقَاتِلُ لِلذِّكْرِ وَيُقَاتِلُ لِيُحْمَدَ وَيُقَاتِلُ لِيَغْنَمَ وَيُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ أَعْلَى فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ

ذِكْرُ وَصْفِ الْغَزْوِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي يَأْجُرُ اللَّهُ مَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "A man fights for pride and haughtiness another fights for bravery, and another fights for showing off; which of these (cases) is in Allah's Cause?" عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ؓ قَالَ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُقَاتِلُ شَجَاعَةً وَالرَّجُلِ يُقَاتِلُ حَمِيَّةً وَالرَّجُلِ يُقَاتِلُ رِيَاءً فَأَيُّ ذَلِكَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
