"The Prophet ﷺ sent a messenger to the village of the Ansar in the morning of the day of 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram) to announce: 'Whoever has eaten something should not eat but complete the fast, and whoever is observing the fast should complete it.' "She further said, "Since then we used to fast on that day regularly and also make our boys fast. We used to make toys of wool for the boys and if anyone of them cried for, he was given those toys till it was the time of the breaking of the fast."

أَرْسَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ غَدَاةَ عَاشُورَاءَ إِلَى قُرَى الأَنْصَارِ مَنْ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا فَلْيَصُمْ قَالَتْ فَكُنَّا نَصُومُهُ بَعْدُ وَنُصَوِّمُ صِبْيَانَنَا وَنَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ اللُّعْبَةَ مِنَ الْعِهْنِ فَإِذَا بَكَى أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ أَعْطَيْنَاهُ ذَاكَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ عِنْدَ الإِفْطَارِ

The Prophet ﷺ ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to announce amongst the people that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue his fast, as that day was the day of 'Ashura' .

أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَجُلاً مِنْ أَسْلَمَ أَنْ أَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ أَنَّ مَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنَّ الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man from the tribe of Al-Aslam, "Proclaim among your people (or the people) on the day of 'Ashura' (tenth of Muharram), 'Whosoever has eaten anything should fast for the rest of the day; and whoever has not eaten anything, should complete his fast.' "

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ أَذِّنْ فِي قَوْمِكَ أَوْ فِي النَّاسِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ أَنَّ مَنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ

Salama b. al-Akwa' (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a person of the tribe of Aslam on the day of 'Ashura and commanded him to declare to the people to observe fast in case they had not observed it, and to complete fast till evening if they had taken food

أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلاً مِنْ أَسْلَمَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُؤَذِّنَ فِي النَّاسِ مَنْ كَانَ لَمْ يَصُمْ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صِيَامَهُ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ

He who got up in the morning fasting (without eating anything) he should complete his fast, and he who had had his breakfast in the morning, he should complete the rest of the day (without food). The Companions said; We henceforth observed fast on it (on the day of 'Ashura) and, God willing, made our children observe that. We went to the mosque and made toys out of wool for them and when anyone felt hungry and wept for food we gave them these toys till it was the time to break the fast.

أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ عَاشُورَاءَ إِلَى قُرَى الأَنْصَارِ الَّتِي حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ مَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ فَكُنَّا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ نَصُومُهُ وَنُصَوِّمُ صِبْيَانَنَا الصِّغَارَ مِنْهُمْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ وَنَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَنَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ اللُّعْبَةَ مِنَ الْعِهْنِ فَإِذَا بَكَى أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ أَعْطَيْنَاهَا إِيَّاهُ عِنْدَ الإِفْطَارِ

AbdurRahman reported on the authority of his uncle that the people of the tribe Aslam came to the Prophet ﷺ. He said (to them): Did you fast on this day? They replied: No. He said: Complete the rest of your day, and make atonement for it.

أَنَّ أَسْلَمَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ صُمْتُمْ يَوْمَكُمْ هَذَا قَالُوا لاَ قَالَ فَأَتِمُّوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ وَاقْضُوهُ

"Salamah told us that the Messenger of Allah said to a man: 'Announce the day of Ashura. Whoever has eaten let him not eat for the rest of the day, and whoever has not eaten, let him fast."'

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ أَذِّنْ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ مَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ

[AI] The Prophet (pbuh) sent a man on the day of Ashura who embraced Islam saying, "Indeed, today is the day of Ashura, so whoever has eaten or drank should complete the rest of his day, and whoever has not eaten or drank should observe fasting."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ «إِنَّ الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَمَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ»

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ ordered a man who embraced Islam to give the call to prayer among the people on the day of Ashura. Whoever was fasting, let him complete his fast, and whoever had eaten, let him not eat anything and complete his fast."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ أَنْ يُؤَذِّنَ فِي النَّاسِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ مَنْ كَانَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَكَلَ فَلَا يَأْكُلْ شَيْئًا وَلِيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ said to the newly converted Muslims, 'Fast this day.' They said, 'We have already eaten.' He said, 'Then fast the rest of your day, meaning the day of Ashura.'"

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَسْلَمَ صُومُوا الْيَوْمَ قَالُوا إِنَّا قَدْ أَكَلْنَا قَالَ صُومُوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man who had embraced Islam to make an announcement among the people, saying, "Today is the day of Ashura. Whoever had eaten should not eat anything else for the remainder of the day, and whoever had not eaten or drunk anything should observe fasting."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ يُؤَذِّنُ فِي النَّاسِ «أَنَّ الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَمَنْ أَكَلَ فَلَا يَأْكُلْ شَيْئًا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ أَوْ شَرِبَ فَلْيَصُمْ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a message to the Ansar villages surrounding Medina on the morning of Ashura, saying: "Whoever starts the day fasting, let them complete their fast; and whoever starts the day not fasting, let them fast the rest of the day." She (one of the narrators) said: "So we used to fast on that day, as well as make our young children fast, and we would take them to the mosque and give them toys made of wool. If one of them started crying from hunger, we would give them the toy until it was time to break the fast."

أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَدَاةَ عَاشُورَاءَ إِلَى قُرَى الْأَنْصَارِ الَّتِي حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ «مَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ» قَالَتْ فَكُنَّا نَصُومُهُ وَنُصَوِّمُ صِبْيَانَنَا الصِّغَارَ وَنَذْهَبُ بِهِمْ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَنَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ اللُّعْبَةَ مِنَ الْعِهْنِ فَإِذَا بَكَى أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ أَعْطَيْنَاهَا إِيَّاهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ عِنْدَ الْإِفْطَارِ

[AI] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Ashura, 'O people, whoever among you wishes to fast this day may do so, and whoever does not wish to fast, let him complete his fast. And whoever eats, let him continue his fast for the rest of the day.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ هَذَا الْيَوْمَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ»

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said on the day of Ashuraa: "O people, whoever of you eats should not eat anything for the rest of the day, and whoever intends to fast should observe the fast."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ أَكَلَ فَلَا يَأْكُلْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ نَوَى مِنْكُمُ الصَّوْمَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent on the morning of the day of Ashura to the towns of the Ansar that were around Madinah, saying, "Whoever wakes up fasting should complete his fast, and whoever wakes up without fasting should fast for the rest of the day." So we would fast it, and our young children would also fast. We would make toys for them from wool, and we would take them to the orchard. If any of them cried due to hunger, we would give them that (the toy) until it was time to break the fast.

أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَبِيحَةَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ إِلَى قُرَى الْأَنْصَارِ الَّتِي حَوْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ «مَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ» فَكُنَّا نَصُومُهُ وَيَصُومُ صِبْيَانُنَا الصِّغَارُ وَنَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ اللُّعْبَةَ مِنَ الْعِهْنِ وَنَذْهَبُ بِهِنَّ إِلَى الْبُسْتَانِ وَإِذَا بَكَى أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّعَامِ أَعْطَيْنَاهُ ذَاكَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ عِنْدَ الْإِفْطَارِ

"Salamah told us that the Messenger of Allah said to a man: 'Announce the day of Ashura. Whoever has eaten let him not eat for the rest of the day, and whoever has not eaten, let him fast."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2321)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ «أَذِّنْ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ مَنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيَصُمْ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said to Aslam, "Fast today." They said, "But we have already eaten." He said, "Then fast the rest of your day, meaning the day of Ashura." Sa'id disagreed with him.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَسْلَمَ «صُومُوا الْيَوْمَ» قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَدْ أَكَلْنَا قَالَ «صُومُوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ» خَالَفَهُ سَعِيدٌ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man from among the Muslims to his people on the day of Ashura and said: "Command them to observe fasting on this day." The man replied: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear that they will not adhere to it until they eat." He ﷺ said: "Whoever among them eats, let him fast the rest of the day."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ مُرْهُمْ فَلْيَصُومُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا أَرَانِي آتِيهِمْ حَتَّى يَطْعَمُوا قَالَ مَنْ طَعِمَ مِنْهُمْ فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ

"أَذِّنْ في النَّاسِ: أَنَّ مَنْ كان أكَلَ فليَصُمْ بقيَّةَ يوْمِه، ومَنْ لم يكنْ أَكَلَ فليَصُمْ، فإِنَّ اليَوْمَ يومُ عاشُوراءَ".

"إِنَّ اليوْمَ يوْمُ عَاشُوراءَ، فَمَنْ أكَلَ فَلا يأكُلْ شَيْئًا بقيَّةَ يوْمِه، ومنْ لَم يكُنْ أَكَل أوْ شَرِب فَليَصُمْ ".

"مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فلا بَقيَّةَ يَوْمِه، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَأكُلْ فَليُتِمَّ صَوْمَه".

"عن أبى مأدبة قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَلِيّا يَقُولُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ: يَأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ! مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْكُم فَلْيَصُمْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَكَلَ فَلْيُتِمَّ صَوْمَهُ".
