52. Chapter
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Al-i'aafah (abstinence), at-tarq (staying away), and at-tayyarah (superstitious beliefs associated with birds) are from al-jibt (superstitions)."
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qutai'i narrated, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated, my father narrated to me, Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated, Awf mentioned it in a similar way, saying: "Al-i'aafah is the sound that birds make when they are scared, at-tarq refers to when a person traces lines on the ground, and al-jibt is attributed to Shaytan (the devil)."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said and in another narration, Shu'bah narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that al-Tayyarah (superstitious belief in omens) is shirk (polytheism), and there is none of us except that Allah eliminates it through reliance on Him.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "There is no 'tayyarah' (superstitious owl). But the best among them is the 'fal' (omen). It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the 'fal'?" He said, "A righteous word that one of you hears."
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , he said: "There is no contagious disease, nor is there any bird omen. And I am amazed by the righteous person's favorable outcome and the good word."
When taking omens was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: The best type is the good omen, and it does not turn back a Muslim. If one of you sees anything he dislikes, he should say: O Allah, no one brings good things except Thee, and no one averts evil things except Thee and there is no might and power but in Allah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3919)
The Prophet ﷺ did not take omens from anything, but when he sent out an agent he asked about his name. If it pleased him, he was glad about it, and his cheerfulness on that account was visible in his face. If he disliked his name, his displeasure on that account was visible in his face. When he entered a village, he asked about its name, and if it pleased him, he was glad about it, and his cheerfulness on that account was visible in his face. But if he disliked its name, his displeasure on that account was visible in his face. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3920)
The Prophet ﷺ said: There is no hamah, no infection and no evil omen; if there is in anything an evil omen, it is a house, a horse, and a woman. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3921)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If there is something evil (bad omen), then it is in horses, dwellings, and women."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "The people of Jahiliyyah used to say that omens are only found in women, animals, and houses." Then I recited, "No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy" [Surah Al-Hadid 22].
[Machine] How many homes have been inhabited by people who have perished, and then other people have inhabited them and perished as well? This is its interpretation as we see it, and Allah knows best.
[Machine] "And I heard from the interpretation of this hadith that the evilness of a woman is when she is not pregnant, and the evilness of a horse is when it is not ridden, and the evilness of a house is a bad neighbor."
A man said: Messenger of Allah! we were in an abode in which our numbers and our goods were many and changed to an abode in which our numbers and our goods became few. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Leave it, for it is reprehensible. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3924)
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, we have lived in this house for a long time, and we have become numerous. Our good manners have deteriorated, and our wealth has increased, leading us to poverty. Should we move away from it, even though it is spacious?" The Prophet replied, "You can either sell it or give it away." Abu Sulaiman Al-Khattabi said, based on what I have heard, it is likely that he ordered them to leave it in order to nullify the false sense of attachment they had towards it. Once they moved away, the attachment to material possessions would be severed. And Allah knows best."
