I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Two resembling sheep are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl. AbuDawud said: I heard Ahmad (ibn Hanbal) say: The Arabic word mukafi'atani means equal (in age) or resembling each other.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَنِ الْغُلاَمِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِئَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

That she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the 'Aqiqah. He said: "For the boy is two sheep, and for the girl is one, it will not harm you if they (i.e. the sheep) are male or female."

أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ عَنِ الْغُلاَمِ شَاتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ وَاحِدَةٌ وَلاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ ذُكْرَانًا كُنَّ أَمْ إِنَاثًا

"For a boy two sheep, Mukafaatan (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep,

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ عَنِ الْغُلاَمِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘On behalf of a boy, two sheep of equal age and on behalf of a girl one sheep.’”

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَنِ الْغُلاَمِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِئَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to sacrifice two sheep for a boy’s ‘Aqiqah and one sheep for a girl.”

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَعُقَّ عَنِ الْغُلاَمِ شَاتَيْنِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةً

“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘On behalf of a boy, two sheep of equal age and on behalf of a girl one sheep.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3162)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ فِي الْعَقِيقَةِ «عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِئَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Two sheep which resemble each other are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl. Abu Dawud said: This is a sound tradition, and the tradition narrated by Sufyan is misunderstanding. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2836)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مِثْلَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to sacrifice two sheep for a boy’s ‘Aqiqah and one sheep for a girl.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3163)

عَقَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَيْنِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةً

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about Aqeeqah, so he said, "I do not like to be disobedient, as if he disliked the name. And he said, 'Whoever has a child and wants to sacrifice for his child, let him do so.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ لَاأُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ كَأَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الِاسْمَ وَقَالَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ فَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

[AI] I asked the Prophet ﷺ about the 'Aqiqah (sacrifice for a newborn), and he said, "I do not like disobedience, but whoever has a child born to him, and wishes to offer a sacrifice for him or from him, then they should do so."

سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ لَا أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ وَلَكِنْ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ عَنْهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

[AI] He said, "I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ at Arafat, and he was asked about 'Aqeeqah (sacrifice for the newborn). He replied, 'I do not like disobedience (to parents), but whoever has a child born to him and wants to sacrifice for him, let him do so."

أَنَّهُ قَالَ شَهِدْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِعَرَفَةَ فَسُئِلَعَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ؟ فَقَالَ لَا أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ وَلَكِنْ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَأَحَبَّ أَنَّ يَنْسُكَ عَنْهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

"For a boy two sheep, Mukafaatan (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep, (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4216)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

"For a boy two sheep, Mukafaatan (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep, (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4216)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فِي الْعَقِيقَةِ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مِثْلَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

[AI] From the Prophet ﷺ about 'Aqiqah, he said: for a baby boy, two sheep should be given as rewards, and for a baby girl, one sheep should be given.

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ

That she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the 'Aqiqah. He said: "For the boy is two sheep, and for the girl is one, it will not harm you if they (i.e. the sheep) are male or female." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1516)

أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ؟ فَقَالَ يُعَقُّ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ وَعَنِ الْأُنْثَى وَاحِدَةٌ وَلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ أَذُكْرَانًا كُنَّ أَوْ إِنَاثًا

"For a boy two sheep, Mukafaatan (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep, (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4216)

Yahya related to me from Zayd ibn Aslam from a man of the Banu Damra that his father said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the Aqiqa. He said, 'I do not like disobedience (uquq),' as if he disliked the name. He said, 'If anyone has a child born to him, and wants to sacrifice for his child, then let him do it.' "

أَنَّهُ قَالَ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ لاَ أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ وَكَأَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا كَرِهَ الاِسْمَ وَقَالَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about Aqeeqah, so he said, "I do not like disobedience. Whoever from amongst you has a child born to him, let him offer a sacrifice on his behalf. For a boy, two sheep are to be sacrificed, and for a girl, one sheep is to be sacrificed."

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ «لَا أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مِنْكُمْ مَوْلُودٌ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُنْسِكَ عَنْهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

[AI] She asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about aqiqah, and he said, "For a boy, two sheep as a reward, and for a girl, one sheep."

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said, "For a male child, there are two sheep as a sacrifice, and for a female child, one sheep."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «فِي الْعَقِيقَة عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

"For a boy two sheep, Mukafaatan (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep, (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4216)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about 'Aqeeqah (sacrificial offering for a newborn). He responded, "I do not like disobedience. It seems as though he dislikes the name. And whoever has a child and wishes to perform 'Aqeeqah for them, then they should do so." The Sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "This is when it is combined with the first [i.e., hating the name], and he [the Prophet ﷺ] associated those two things with his love."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ لَا أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ وَكَأَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا كَرِهَ الِاسْمَ وَقَالَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ وَهَذَا إِذَا انْضَمَّ إِلَى الْأَوَّلِ قَوِيَا وَقَدْ عَلَّقَ فِيهِمَا ذَلِكَ بِمَحَبَّتِهِ

"الْعَقِيقَةُ حقٌّ. عَنِ الْغُلام شَاتان مكَافِئتان، وعن الْجَاريَةِ شَاةٌ" .

"عن الغلام شَاتَان مُكَافأتَان، وَعَنِ الجَاريَة شَاةٌ".

"مَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ ينْسِك عن وَلَدِهِ فَلْيفْعل، عن الغُلامِ شاتَانِ مُكَافأَتان، وعن الجارية شاةٌ".

"لَا أُحِبُّ العُقُوق، مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مِنْكُمْ مَوْلُودٌ فَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَنْهُ فَليَفْعَل عَنِ الغُلامِ شَاتَان، وَعَنِ الجَارِيَة شَاةٌ".

"لا يحِبُّ الله العُقُوقَ، وَمَنْ ولُدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَأَحَبَّ أنْ يَنْسِكَ عَنْهُ فَليَنْسِكْ. عَنِ الغُلامِ شَاتَانِ متَكافِئَتانِ، وَعَنِ الجَارِيِة شَاةٌ".
