[AI] That he came to Syria and saw the Christians prostrating to their bishops, priests, and patriarchs, and he saw the Jews prostrating to their rabbis, monks, devotees, scholars, and jurists. He said, “Why do you do this?” They said, “This is the greeting of the prophets—peace and blessings be upon them.” I said, “Then we have more right to do this for our Prophet.” So the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: “They have lied about their prophets, just as they distorted their Book. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would command a woman to prostrate to her husband because of the his great right over her. And no woman will find the sweetness of faith until she fulfills the right of her husband, even if he asks her for herself while she is on the back of a saddle.”

أَنَّهُ أَتَى الشَّامَ فَرَأَى النَّصَارَى يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَسَاقِفَتِهِمْ وَقِسِّيسِيهِمْ وَبَطَارِقَتِهِمْ وَرَأَى الْيَهُودَ يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَحْبَارِهِمْ وَرُهْبَانِهِمْ وَرُبَّانِيهِمْ وَعُلَمَائِهِمْ وَفُقَهَائِهِمْ فَقَالَ لِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ تَفْعَلُونَ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذِهِ تَحِيَّةُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ عَلَيْهِمُ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ قُلْتُ فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ نَصْنَعَ بِنَبِيِّنَا فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهُ ﷺ «إِنَّهُمْ كَذَبُوا عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ كَمَا حَرَّفُوا كِتَابَهُمْ لَوْ أَمَرْتُ أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ الْمَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا مِنْ عَظِيمِ حَقِّهِ عَلَيْهَا وَلَا تَجِدُ امْرَأَةٌ حَلَاوَةَ الْإِيمَانِ حَتَّى تُؤَدِّيَ حَقَّ زَوْجِهَا وَلَوْ سَأَلَهَا نَفْسَهَا وَهِيَ عَلَى ظَهْرِ قَتَبٍ»

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about the People of the Book prostrating to their bishops and rabbis? Shouldn't we prostrate to you instead?" He said, "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate to her husband. And the wife would not fulfill her husband's rights even if he asked her to do so while riding a camel, she would give it to him."

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَسَاقِفَتِهِمْ وَبَطَارِقَتِهِمْ؟ أَفَلَا نَسْجُدُ لَكَ؟ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ آمِرًا أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ الْمَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا وَلَا تُؤَدِّي الْمَرْأَةُ حَقَّ زَوْجِهَا حَتَّى لَوْ سَأَلَهَا نَفْسَهَا عَلَى قَتَبٍ لَأَعْطَتْهُ»

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , sent Mu'adh to Sham (Syria). When he arrived, Mu'adh said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have seen the People of the Book prostrating to their bishops and monks. Shouldn't we prostrate to you?" The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , replied, "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone else, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate to her husband. And a wife does not fulfill her husband's rights even if he asks her while she is on the back of a camel."

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُعَاذًا إِلَى الشَّامِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يَسْجُدُونَ لِأَسَاقِفَتِهِمْ وَبَطَارِقَتِهِمْ أَلَا نَسْجُدُ لَكَ؟ قَالَ «لَوْ كُنْتُ آمِرًا أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ الْمَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا وَلَا تُؤَدِّي الْمَرْأَةُ حَقَّ زَوْجِهَا حَتَّى لَوْ سَأَلَهَا نَفْسَهَا عَلَى ظَهْرِ قَتَبٍ أَعْطَتْهُ»

[Machine] To do that for the Prophet ﷺ , so when he arrived, he prostrated to the Prophet ﷺ and he objected to that. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I entered Syria and found them prostrating to their bishops and patriarchs. So, I thought to myself that I should do the same for you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate to her husband. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, a woman does not fulfill her Lord's right until she fulfills her husband's right in its entirety, even if he were to ask for her while she is on a saddle."

أَنْ يَفْعَلَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ سَجَدَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي دَخَلْتُ الشَّامَ فَوَجَدْتُهُمْ يَسْجُدُونَ لِبَطَارِقَتِهِمْ وَأَسَاقِفَتِهِمْ فَرَوَيْتُ فِي نَفْسِي أَنْ أَفْعَلَ ذَلِكَ لَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لَوْ كُنْتُ آمِرًا أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ الْمَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَا تُؤَدِّي الْمَرْأَةُ حَقَّ رَبِّهَا ﷻ حَتَّى تُؤَدِّيَ حَقَّ زَوْجِهَا كُلَّهُ حَتَّى أَنْ لَوْ سَأَلَهَا نَفْسَهَا وَهِيَ عَلَى قَتَبٍ أَعْطَتْهُ أَوْ قَالَ لَمْ تَمْنَعْهُ
