[Machine] "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was seeking strength, and I was with him in a group of Muslims, he called Bilal for prayer and said, 'Tell someone to lead the people in prayer.' So, I went out and found Umar among the people, while Abu Bakr was absent. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Stand up, O Umar, and lead the people in prayer.' He stood up and when Umar began to say the takbir (saying Allahu Akbar to commence the prayer), the Prophet ﷺ heard his voice. Umar was a tall man with a loud voice. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Where is Abu Bakr? May Allah not allow this without the presence of Abu Bakr and the Muslims.' He sent for Abu Bakr and he came after Umar had performed the prayer and he led the people in prayer. Abdullah ibn Zam'a said, 'Umar said to me, 'Woe to you, Ibn Zam'a! What have you done to me? By Allah, I did not think when you ordered me, except that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered you to do so. If it were not for that, I would not have prayed with the people.' I said, 'By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not order me. However, when I did not see Abu Bakr, I thought you were more deserving of leading the prayer among those present.'"

When the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became serious while I was with him among a group of people, Bilal called him for prayer. He said: Ask someone to lead the people in prayer. So Abdullah ibn Zam'ah went out and found that Umar was present among the people and AbuBakr was not there. I said: Umar, get up and lead the people in prayer. So he came forward and uttered "Allah is Most Great". When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard his voice, as Umar had a loud voice, he said: Where is AbuBakr? Allah does not allow that, and the Muslims too; Allah does not allow that, and the Muslims too. So he sent for AbuBakr. He came after Umar had led the people in that prayer. He then led the people in prayer.

[Machine] When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in severe pain and I was with him in the presence of some Muslims, he called Bilal to perform the prayer and said, "Tell him to command the people to pray." So Bilal went out and came to Umar, as Abu Bakr was absent, and said, "O Umar, stand and lead the prayer for the people." Umar stood up, and when he recited the takbeer (saying "Allahu Akbar" to begin the prayer), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ heard his voice. Umar had a loud voice. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Where is Abu Bakr? May Allah refuse to grant him that and the Muslims." He repeated this several times. Then he sent for Abu Bakr, who came after Umar had led the prayer. Abu Bakr led the people in prayer. Abdullah ibn Zam'ah said, "Umar asked me, 'What did you do to me, Ibn Zam'ah?' By Allah, when you commanded me to lead the people in prayer, I did not think that I should do so unless the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had commanded me to do so. If it weren't for that, I would not have led the people in prayer. I said, 'The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did command you to do so, but when I did not see Abu Bakr, I thought you were better than one who was present.'"
