That he heard Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan (talking) on the pulpit in the year when he performed the Hajj. He took a tuft of hair that was in the hand of an orderly and said, "O people of Medina! Where are your learned men? I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding such a thing as this (i.e. false hair) and he used to say, 'The Israelis were destroyed when their ladies practiced this habit (of using false hair to lengthen their locks).

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَامَ حَجَّ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَتَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعَرٍ وَكَانَتْ فِي يَدَىْ حَرَسِيٍّ فَقَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ

that in the year he performed Hajj. he heard Mu'awiya bin Abi Sufyan, who was on the pulpit and was taking a tuft of hair from one of his guards, saying, "Where are your religious learned men? I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this (false hair) and saying, 'The children of Israel were destroyed when their women started using this.'"

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this and saying: That the people of Bani Isra'il were ruined at the time when their women wore such hair.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

That he heard Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan say during the Hajj when he was on the pulpit and took a lock of hair which was in the hand of the guard, saying: O people of Medina, where are your scholars ? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such a think as this and said: The children of Isra'il perished when their women practised it.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

that he heard Mu'awiyah giving a Khutbah in Al-Madinah, and saying: "Where are your scholars, O people of Al-Madinah? [Indeed] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding from these locks (of hair), and saying: 'The Children of Isra'il were only ruined when their women used them.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ هَذِهِ الْقُصَّةِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ

"I heard Mu'awiyah say, when he was on the Minbar in Al-Madinah, and he brought out a hairpiece from his sleeve: 'O people of Al-Madinah, where are your knowledgeable ones? I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbid such things as this, and he said: "The Children of Israel were destroyed when their women started to wear things like this."

سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ كُمِّهِ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ نِسَاؤُهُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا

[AI] "He saw Muawiyah giving a sermon on the pulpit, holding in his hand a lock of hair. He said, 'Where are your scholars, O people of the city?' I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , forbidding such actions and saying, 'The Children of Israel were punished when their women adopted such practices.'"

أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعَرٍ قَالَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِه وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Humay ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf heard Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan say from the mimbar in the year that he performed the hajj, holding a lock of hair (i.e. a hairpiece) which he took from one of his guards, "People of Madina! Where are your learned men? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid the like of this, saying, 'The Banu Israil were destroyed when their women started to use this.' "

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَتَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعَرٍ كَانَتْ فِي يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ

[AI] "He heard Muawiyah during the year of Hajj while he was on the pulpit reciting a poem that was in the hands of a guard. He said, 'O people of the city, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such actions and saying, 'Indeed, the people of Bani Israel were destroyed when their women started doing this.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ تَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ كَانَتْ فِي يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حَيْثُ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ»

[AI] He heard Muawiyah giving a sermon in the city on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , with a piece of hair in his hand. He said, "Where are your scholars, O people of the city? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this and saying, 'Indeed, those before you were destroyed when their women took to adornment.'"

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعَرٍ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ هَذِهِ وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ حِينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ»

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik and Bakr ibn Sahl narrated from Abdullah ibn Yusuf, I am Malik. Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi narrated from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam, who narrated from Malik, that Ibn Shihab narrated from Humaid ibn Abd al-Rahman that he heard Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan in the year of Hajj while he was on the pulpit and he recited a poem that was in the hand of Harasi. He said, "O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such things and saying, 'Indeed, the Children of Israel were destroyed when their women engaged in these practices.'" And the wording for this hadith is attributed to al-Qa'nabi.

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَنَا مَالِكٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ ثنا مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَتَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ كَانَتْ فِي يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا» هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ «» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Sufyan, from Az-Zuhri, from Humaid bin Abdul Rahman who said: Mu'awiyah came to Medina and he said, "Where are your scholars?" Then he pulled out a lock of hair from his beard and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this, and he said, 'The people of Banu Isra'il were destroyed when their women started doing this.'"

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ وَأَخْرَجَ كُبَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ مِنْ كُمِّهِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ هَذَا وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ نِسَاؤُهُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا»

[AI] I heard Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan in Al-Madinah holding a document in his hand containing stories of women. He said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade such actions and said, "The people of Bani Israel were destroyed when their women did this."

سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ بِيَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ قُصَصِ النِّسَاءِ يَقُولُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنِو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ نِسَاؤُهُمْ هَذَا»

[AI] I heard Muawiyah when he was on the pulpit in Al-Madinah saying, "O people of Al-Madinah, where are your scholars? I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting (denouncing) such a narration. And he placed his hand on his head, and I have not seen anything more beautiful than it on a bride or anyone other than Muawiyah."

سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُ «يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ فُقَهَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ» يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ الْقُصَّةِ « وَوَضَعَهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ فَلَمْ أَرَهَا عَلَى عَرُوسٍ وَلَا عَلَى غَيْرِهَا أَجْمَلَ مِنْهَا عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ»

"I heard Mu'awiyah say, when he was on the Minbar in Al-Madinah, and he brought out a hairpiece from his sleeve: 'O people of Al-Madinah, where are your knowledgeable ones? سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ كُمِّهِ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ «أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟» سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ نِسَاؤُهُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا»

[AI] Mu'awiyah said from the pulpit of the city, "Where are your scholars, O people of the city? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid things like this, and he narrated a story from a group among you, from the Ku'bah of one of them, containing poetry, and he said, 'Verily, the Children of Israel were destroyed when their women began to adopt such actions. Where are your scholars, O people of the city? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on this day, the Day of Ashura, saying, 'Indeed, I am fasting, so whoever among you wants to fast, let him fast.'"

قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَأَخْرَجَ قُصَّةً مِنْ كُبَّةٍ مِنْ كُمِّهِ مِنْ شَعْرٍ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حَيْثُ اتَّخَذَتْ نِسَاؤُهُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ يَقُولُ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ

"عن معاوية، أنه خطب وفى يده قصة من شعر من قصص النساء، فقال: نهى رسول الله ﷺ عن مثل هذا، وقال: إنما هلكت، وفى لفظ: إنما عذبت بنو إسرائيل حين اتخذت هذه نساؤهم".
