[Machine] The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were not skillful speakers nor did they engage in poetry in their gatherings, and they did not mention the matters of their pre-Islamic era. So when one of them was asked about something related to his religion, his eyes would turn red as if he was insane.  

لَمْ يَكُنْ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُتَحَرِّفِينَ وَلَا كَانُوا يَتَنَاشَدُونَ الشِّعْرَ فِي مَجَالِسِهِمْ وَيَذْكُرُونَ أَمْرَ جَاهِلِيَّتِهِمْ فَإِذَا أُرِيدَ أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ دِينِهِ دَارَتْ حَمَالِيقُ عَيْنَيْهِ كَأَنَّهُ مَجْنُونٌ  

[Machine] Their passion does not wane, one being a seeker of knowledge and the other seeking worldly desires.  

مَنْهُومَانِ لَا تَنْقَضِي نُهْمَتُهُمَا طَالِبُ عِلْمٍ وَطَالِبُ دُنْيَا  

The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever seeks knowledge in order to argue with the foolish, or to show off before the scholars, or to attract people's attention, will be in Hell." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 253)   

مَنْ طَلَبَ الْحَدِيثَ لِيُمَارِيَ بِهِ السُّفَهَاءَ أَوْ لِيُبَاهِيَ بِهِ الْعُلَمَاءَ أَوْ لِيَصْرِفَ بِهِ وُجُوهَ النَّاسِ إِلَيْهِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ  

[Machine] Al-Hasan used to tell stories, and Sa'id Ibn Jubayr used to interpret.  

كَانَ الْحَسَنُ يَقُصُّ وَكَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ يَفِصُّ  

[Machine] I saw Tamim al-Dari narrating during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, meaning he was recounting or reminding.  

رَأَيْتُ تَمِيمَ الدَّارِيَّ يَقُصُّ فِي زَمَنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ يَعْنِي يُذَكِّرُ  

[Machine] "That he is safe, neither upon him nor upon him."  

أَنَّهُ يَسْلَمُ كَفَافًا لَا عَلَيْهِ وَلَا لَهُ  

[Machine] Solomon said to his son, "O my son, do not take action without seeking advice, for if you do so, you will not regret it."  

قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تَقْطَعْ أَمْرًا حَتَّى تُؤَامِرَ مُرْشِدًا؛ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ لَمْ تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِ  

[Machine] Indeed, it is a test for the one who follows and humiliation for the one who imitates.  

إِنَّهَا فِتْنَةٌ لِلْمَتْبُوعِ مَذَلَّةٌ لِلتَّابِعِ  

[Machine] Ibn Sirin did not leave anyone walking with him.  

لَمْ يَكُنِ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ يَتْرُكُ أَحَدًا يَمْشِي مَعَهُ  

[Machine] Abu al-Ala used to stand up when more than four people sat next to him.  

كَانَ أَبُو الْعَالِيَةِ إِذَا جَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَرْبَعَةٍ قَامَ  

The Prophet ﷺ said: He who is two-faced in this world will have two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4873)   

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا كَانَ لَهُ وَجْهَانِ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَانَ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لِسَانَانِ مِنْ نَارٍ»  

“A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tell me, which of the people has most right to my good companionship?' He said: 'Yes, by your father, you will certainly be told.' He said: 'Your mother,' He said: 'Then who?' He said: Then your mother.' He said: 'Then who?' He said: Then your mother.' He said: 'Then who?' He said: Then your father.' He said: 'Tell me, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ about my wealth- how should I give in charity?' He said: 'Yes, by Allah (SWT) you will certainly be told. You should give in charity when you are still healthy and greedy for wealth, hoping for a long life and fearing poverty. Do not tarry until your soul reaches here and you say: “My wealth of for so-and-so,” and “My wealth of for so-and-so,” and it will be for them even though you dislike that.'” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2706)   

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَبِّئْنِي بِأَحَقِّ النَّاسِ مِنِّي بِحُسْنِ الصُّحْبَةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَأَبِيكَ لَتُنَبَّأَنَّ أُمُّكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ أُمُّكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ أُمُّكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَنْ؟ قَالَ أَبُوكَ قَالَ فَأَنْبِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا لِي كَيْفَ أَتَصَدَّقُ مِنْهُ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَاللَّهِ لَتُنَبَّأَنَّ تَصَدَّقْ وَأَنْتَ صَحِيحٌ شَحِيحٌ تَأْمَلُ الْبَقَاءَ وَتَخْشَى الْفَقْرَ وَلَا تَهْمَلْ حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَتْ نَفْسُكَ هَا هُنَا قُلْتَ مَالِي لِفُلَانٍ وَمَالِي لِفُلَانٍ وَهُوَ لَهُمْ وَإِنْ كَرِهْتَ  

[Machine] "And he said, every misfortune that befalls you is a calamity."  

وَقَالَ كُلُّ مَا سَاءَكَ مُصِيبَةٌ  

[Machine] "From Abu Al-Jawza' (a companion of the Prophet): "Except for those who come to Allah with a sound heart." [Surah Ash-Shu'ara 89] He said: "There is no god but Allah."  

عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ {إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ} [الشعراء 89] قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ  

[Machine] "And turn towards Him a sincere turning." [Surah al-Muzzammil 8] He said, "Purify the intention with utmost sincerity."  

{وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا} [المزمل 8] قَالَ أَخْلِصِ النِّيَّةَ إِخْلَاصًا  

[Machine] I heard Al-Hassan saying, "If you see a man competing in this world, compete with him in the hereafter."  

سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ يُنَافِسُ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَنَافِسْهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ  

[Machine] The general saying of Ibn Sirin, "Glory to Allah, the Almighty, glory be to Allah and praise be to Him."  

كَانَ عَامَّةُ كَلَامِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ  

[Machine] He used to say to his companions, "There is a time for this world and a time for the hereafter, so let us say during our conversation: O Allah, forgive us."  

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ لِجُلَسَائِهِ سَاعَةٌ لِلدُّنْيَا وَسَاعَةٌ لِلْآخِرَةِ قُولُوا فِي خِلَالِ الْحَدِيثِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَنَا  

[Machine] That the man gives his child something, then the child leaves with it and the poor person sees it, so he cries for his family, and the orphan sees it, so he cries for his family.  

أَنْ يُعْطِيَ الرَّجُلُ صَبِيَّهُ الشَّيْءَ فَيَخْرُجَ بِهِ فَيَرَاهُ الْمِسْكِينُ فَيَبْكِي عَلَى أَهْلِهِ وَيَرَاهُ الْيَتِيمُ فَيَبْكِي عَلَى أَهْلِهِ  

[Machine] A believer and an unbeliever went fishing. The unbeliever cast his net and mentioned his idols, but nothing came. The believer then cast his net and mentioned Allah, and he caught a fish. He took the fish in his hand and it struggled, slipping back into the water. The believer returned empty-handed, while the unbeliever's boat was filled with fish. The angel of the believer regretted and said, "O Lord, your servant, the believer, returned empty-handed while the unbeliever came back with his boat filled with fish." Allah said to the angel, "Come, I will show you the abode of the believer in Paradise." The angel asked Allah how the believer can be harmed after reaching such a status, and then Allah showed the angel the abode of the unbeliever in Hellfire. The angel asked Allah, "Can anything compensate for what he experienced in the world?" Allah replied, "No, by Allah, my Lord."  

انْطَلَقَ رَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ وَرَجُلٌ كَافِرٌ يَصِيدَانِ السَّمَكَ فَجَعَلَ الْكَافِرُ يُلْقِي شَبَكَتَهُ وَيَذْكُرُ آلِهَتَهُ فَيَجِيءُ مُدَفَّقًا وَيُلْقَى الْمُؤْمِنُ وَيُذْكَرُ اللَّهَ ﷻ فَلَا يَجِيءُ شَيْءٌ قَالَ فَتَعَاوَدَا ذَلِكَ إِلَى مَغِيبِ الشَّمْسِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ صَادَ سَمَكَةً فَأَخَذَهَا بِيَدِهِ فَاضْطَرَبَتْ فَوَقَعَتْ فِي الْمَاءِ فَرَجَعَ الْمُؤْمِنُ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُ شَيْءٌ وَرَجَعَ الْكَافِرُ وَقَدِ امْتَلَأَتْ سَفِينَتُهُ فَأَسِفَ مَلَكُ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَقَالَ رَبِّ عَبْدُكَ هَذَا الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يَدْعُوكَ رَجَعَ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُ شَيْءٌ وَعَبْدُكَ الْكَافِرُ رَجَعَ وَقَدِ امْتَلَأَتْ سَفِينَتُهُ قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ لِمَلَكِ الْمُؤْمِنِ تَعَالَ فَأَرَاهُ مَسْكَنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَقَالَ مَا يَضُرُّ عَبْدِيَ الْمُؤْمِنَ مَا أَصَابَهُ بَعْدَ أَنْ يَصِيرَ إِلَى هَذَا وَأَرَاهُ مَسْكَنَ الْكَافِرِ فِي النَّارِ فَقَالَ هَلْ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ شَيْءٌ أَصَابَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا؟ قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَبِّ  

[Machine] I heard my father say, "One of them would immerse himself in reciting the Quran and seeking knowledge, until he acquired worldly possessions. He then embraced them to his chest and carried them above his head. Three weak individuals, a weak woman, an ignorant Bedouin, and a non-Arab saw him, and they said, 'This person has more knowledge of Allah than us, even if he did not see any evidence of it in the world.' They coveted worldly possessions and collected them. My father would say, 'His example is like the one mentioned by Allah in the verse, 'And among the burdens of those who are led astray without knowledge...' (Surah An-Nahl, 16:25)."  

سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ يَعْمِدُ أَحَدُهُمْ فَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَطْلُبُ الْعِلْمَ حَتَّى إِذَا عَلِمَ أَخَذَ الدُّنْيَا فَضَمَّهَا إِلَى صَدْرِهِ وَحَمَلَهَا فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ ثَلَاثَةٌ ضُعَفَاءُ امْرَأَةٌ ضَعِيفَةٌ وَأَعْرَابِيٌّ جَاهِلٌ وَأَعْجَمِيٌّ فَقَالُوا هَذَا أَعْلَمُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَّا لَوْ لَمْ يَرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا ذَخِيرَةً مَا فَعَلَ هَذَا فَرَغِبُوا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَجَمَعُوهَا فَكَانَ أَبِي يَقُولُ فَمَثَلُهُ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷻ {وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ الَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ} [النحل 25]  

[Machine] The remembrance of Allah by the servant is greater than the remembrance of the servant for Allah.  

ذِكْرُ اللَّهِ الْعَبْدَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ ذِكْرِ الْعَبْدِ لِلَّهِ ﷻ  

[Machine] "You raise your hands to Allah or you will be forced to."  

لَتَرْفَعُنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ ﷻ أَوْ لَيَغُلَّنَّهَا  

[Machine] Abu Darda saw a woman with something between her eyes the size of a sheep's kneecap. He said, "If only this was not between your eyes, it would have been better for you."  

أَنَّ أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ أَبْصَرَ امْرَأَةً بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهَا مِثْلُ [178] رُكْبَةِ الشَّاةِ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّ هَذَا لَوْ لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْكِ كَانَ خَيْرًا لَكِ  

I asked AbulAshhab: Did AbdurRahman ibn Tarafah meet his grandfather Arfajah? He replied: Yes. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4233)   

نَعَمْ  

[Machine] That scarf remained in our hands until the ties of kinship were severed and we lost the scarf.  

مَا زَالَ ذَلِكَ الْمِنْدِيلُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا حَتَّى قُتِلَ صِلَةُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ فَفَقَدْنَا الْمِنْدِيلَ  

[Machine] "O my daughter, indeed Hell does not let your father sleep."  

يَا بُنَيَّةُ إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَا تَدَعُ أَبَاكِ يَنَامُ
