The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would accept a present, but would not accept alms (sadaqah). And Wahb bin Baqiyyah narrated to us, elsewhere, from Khalid, from Muhammad ibn Amr said on the authority of AbuSalamah, and he did not mention the name of Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept presents but not alms (sadaqah). This version adds: So a Jewess presented him at Khaybar with a roasted sheep which she had poisoned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate of it and the people also ate. He then said: Take away your hands (from the food), for it has informed me that it is poisoned. Bishr ibn al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur al-Ansari died. So he (the Prophet) sent for the Jewess (and said to her): What motivated you to do the work you have done? She said: If you were a prophet, it would not harm you; but if you were a king, I should rid the people of you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered regarding her and she was killed. He then said about the pain of which he died: I continued to feel pain from the morsel which I had eaten at Khaybar. This is the time when it has cut off my aorta.

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to eat gifts and not accept charity. A woman from the Jews of Khaybar presented him with a roasted sheep as a gift, so he ate from it and also gave some to Bishr bin al-Bara'ah. Then the Prophet ﷺ raised his hand and said, "This sheep informs me that it is poisoned." Bishr bin al-Bara'ah died from the poison. The Prophet ﷺ sent a message to the woman saying, "What made you do what you did?" She replied, "If you are a prophet, it would not harm you, and if you are a king, I would save the people from you." In his illness, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I still feel the effects of the food I ate in Khaybar. This is the time when my aorta will be severed."

[AI] A Jewish woman invited the Prophet ﷺ and his companions to a meal that included a poisonous sheep. When they sat down to eat, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a bite of the food and then said to them, "Stop, for this sheep is poisoned." The Jewish woman asked him, "What harmed you? I wanted to see if you were a true prophet. This poison would not harm you, but if you were not a prophet, I would save people from you." However, Shirah, the son of Al-Baraa, ate from it and died. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for the Jewish woman to be killed. This incident is mentioned in Sahih Muslim and it has not been contradicted. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.

[AI] A Jew woman presented a roasted sheep to the Prophet ﷺ, and he ate from it. Then she said, "I informed you that it was poisoned." Bishr ibn al-Bara' died from it. The Prophet ﷺ sent for her and asked, "What led you to do such an act?" She replied, "I wanted to test whether you were a true Prophet or a king. If you were a Prophet, it would not harm you, and if you were a king, I would relieve people from you." The Prophet ﷺ ordered her to be executed.

[AI] It was presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Khaybar a cooked sheep. He and Bashir bin Al-Bara' bin Ma'rur ate from it, then both of them became seriously ill. Eventually, Bashir died. When he died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to the Jewish woman who had presented it and said, "What did you feed us, may Allah curse you?" She replied, "I poisoned you." He asked, "What made you do that?" She said, "I heard you mention that if you were a prophet, it would not harm you, but if you were not, I wanted to relieve people from you." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered her to be crucified.
