Once the Prophet ﷺ sat on a pulpit and we sat around him. Then he said, "The things I am afraid of most for your sake (concerning what will befall you after me) is the pleasures and splendors of the world and its beauties which will be disclosed to you." Somebody said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Can the good bring forth evil?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent for a while. It was said to that person, "What is wrong with you? You are talking to the Prophet ﷺ while he is not talking to you." Then we noticed that he was being inspired divinely. Then the Prophet ﷺ wiped off his sweat and said, "Where is the questioner?" It seemed as if the Prophet ﷺ liked his question. Then he said, "Good never brings forth evil. Indeed it is like what grows on the banks of a water-stream which either kill or make the animals sick, except if an animal eats its fill the Khadira (a kind of vegetable) and then faces the sun, and then defecates and urinates and grazes again. No doubt this wealth is sweet and green. Blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travelers. (Or the Prophet said something similar to it) No doubt, whoever takes it illegally will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied, and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and said, "Nothing worries me as to what will happen to you after me, except the temptation of worldly blessings which will be conferred on you." Then he mentioned the worldly pleasures. He started with the one (i.e. the blessings) and took up the other (i.e. the pleasures). A man got up saying, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Can the good bring about evil?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent and we thought that he was being inspired divinely, so all the people kept silent with awe. Then the Prophet ﷺ wiped the sweat off his face and asked, "Where is the present questioner?" "Do you think wealth is good?" he repeated thrice, adding, "No doubt, good produces nothing but good. Indeed it is like what grows on the banks of a stream which either kills or nearly kills the grazing animals because of gluttony except the vegetation-eating animal which eats till both its flanks are full (i.e. till it gets satisfied) and then stands in the sun and defecates and urinates and again starts grazing. This worldly property is sweet vegetation. How excellent the wealth of the Muslim is, if it is collected through legal means and is spent in Allah's Cause and on orphans, poor people and travelers. But he who does not take it legally is like an eater who is never satisfied and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The pleasures of the world." A man said, "Can the good bring forth evil?" The Prophet ﷺ kept quiet for a while till we thought that he was being inspired divinely. Then he started removing the sweat from his forehead and said," Where is the questioner?" That man said, "I (am present)." Abu Saʿid added: We thanked the man when the result (of his question) was such. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Good never brings forth but good. This wealth (of the world) is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and all the vegetation which grows on the bank of a stream either kills or nearly kills the animal that eats too much of it, except the animal that eats the Khadira (a kind of vegetation). Such an animal eats till its stomach is full and then it faces the sun and starts ruminating and then it passes out dung and urine and goes to eat again. This worldly wealth is (like) sweet (fruit), and if a person earns it (the wealth) in a legal way and spends it properly, then it is an excellent helper, and whoever earns it in an illegal way, he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied."

O people, by Allah, I do not entertain fear about you in regard to anything else than that which Allah would bring forth for you in the form of adornment of the world. A person said: Messenger of Allah, does good produce evil? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent for a while and he then said: What did you say? He replied: Messenger of Allah, I said: Does good produce evil? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: The good does not produce but good. but among the plants the spring rain produces There some which kill with a tremour or nearly kill all but the animal which feeds on vegetation. It eats and when its flanks are distended, it faces the can. then when it has donged or urinated and chewed it returns and eats. He who accepts wealth rightly, Allah confers blessing on it for him. and he who takes wealth without any right, he is like one who eats and is not satisfied.

The most dreadful thing I fear in your case is what Allah brings forth for you in the form of the adornment of the world. They (the Prophet's Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, what is the adornment of the world? He said: Blessings (the natural resources) of the earth. They (again) said: Messenger of Allah, does good produce evil? He said: No, only good comes out of good. No, only good comes out of good. No. only good comes out of good. All that which the spring rain helps to grow kills or is about to kill but (the animal) which feeds on vegetation. It eats and when its flanks are distended, it faces the sun, it chews the cud, it has dunged and urinated. it returns and eats. This wealth is green and sweet, and he who accepts it and applies it rightly, finds it a good help, but he who takes it wrongfully is like one who eats without being satisfied.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting on the pulpit and we were sitting around him, and he said: What I am afraid of in regard to you after my death is that there would be opened for you the adornments of the world and its beauties. A person said: Messenger of Allah, does good produce evil? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. And it was said to him (the man who had asked the question from the Holy Prophet): What Is the matter with you, that you speak with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ but he does not speak with you? We thought as if revelation was descending upon him. He regained himself and wiped the sweat from him and said: He was the inquirer (and his style of expression showed as if he praised him and then added): Verily good does not produce evil. Whatever the spring rainfall causes to grow kills or is about to kill, but that (animal) which feeds on vegetation. It eats till its flanks are filled; it faces the sun and dungs and urinates. and then returns to eat. And this Wealth is a sweet vegetation, and it is a good companion for a Muslim who gives out of it to the needy, to the orphan. to the wayfarer, or something like that as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who takes it without his right is like one who eats but does not feel satisfied, and it would stand witness against him on the Day of judgment.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while he was on the pulpit: "Indeed, the most fearful thing that I fear for you is what Allah will bring forth from the plants of the earth and the flower of the world." A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, does good come with evil?" So he remained silent until we saw that he was being covered by dust and sweat. Then he said, "Where is the questioner?" So the man said, "Here I am, and I only intended good." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, good only comes with good. Indeed, good only comes with good. Indeed, good only comes with good. But the world is green and sweet, and everything that the spring produces kills except the green eaters. For they consume until their sides expand and they face the sun, then they become sick and turn yellow. Then they return and eat again. So whoever takes it rightfully, it will be blessed for him. And whoever takes it unlawfully will not be blessed for him, and he will be like one who eats but does not become full." Abdullah said, "My father said, "Sufyan used to ask me about this hadith."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The most fearful thing that I fear for you is the growth of the earth or the flowers of the world." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, does good come with evil?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we thought that he would receive revelation. Then, he began to sweat and his face turned red. He awoke and asked, "Where is the inquirer?" The man said, "Here I am, seeking nothing but goodness." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, good only brings good. Every plant that springs in spring is either a strong poison or a food for grazing animals. Verily, it is their food. When their sides grow weak, they face the sun, and they grow wilted and yellow. Then, they come back to life and I eat them. Then, they overflow with strength and ripen. This wealth is sweet, green, and fruitful. Whoever takes it rightfully will be blessed with it, and whoever takes it unlawfully will not be blessed with it. It is like someone who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Al-Husayn bin Al-Hasan claimed that Sufyan asked him about this hadith forty years ago.

So, a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, can good come from evil?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent until we thought he was being revealed to. When the revelation was over, he asked, "Where is the questioner?" The man said, "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah, and I only seek good." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Good only comes with good. However, everything that springs forth in the spring kills, except for green vegetation. It eats until its sides become exposed to the sun, withers away, then comes back and eats again. Then it rises and fattens.
