"عَن ابْن عمْرو قَالَ: حَاصَر النَّبىُّ ﷺ أهْلَ الطَّائِفِ فَلمْ يَنَلْ مِنْهُمْ شَيْئًا، قَالَ: إِنَّا قَافِلُونَ غَدًا إِنْ شَاءَ الله، قَالَ الْمُسْلمُونَ: أَنَرْجعُ وَلَمْ نَفْتَحهُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : اغْدُوا عَلَى الْقتَال، فَغَدَوْا فَأَصَابَهُمْ جِرَاح فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ إِنَّا قَافِلُونَ غَدًا إِنْ شَاءَ الله، فَأَعْجَبَهُمْ ذَلَكَ، فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ ".

When Messenger of Allah ﷺ besieged Taif and could not conquer its people, he said, "We will return (to Medina) If Allah wills." That distressed the Companions (of the Prophet ﷺ and they said, "Shall we go away without conquering it (i.e. the Fort of Taif)?" Once the Prophet ﷺ said, "Let us return." Then the Prophet said (to them), "Fight tomorrow." They fought and (many of them) got wounded, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "We will return (to Medina) tomorrow if Allah wills." That delighted them, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ smiled. The sub-narrator, Sufyan said once, "(The Prophet) smiled."

The Prophet ﷺ besieged the people of Ta'if, but he did not conquer it. He said, "Tomorrow, if Allah will, we will return home. On this the Muslims said, "Then we return without conquering it?" He said, 'Then carry on fighting tomorrow." The next day many of them were injured. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If Allah will, we will return home tomorrow." It seemed that statement pleased them whereupon Allah's Apostle smiled.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: (All right) make a raid in the morning. They did so. and were wounded (with the arrows showered upon them). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We shall depart tomorrow. (The narrator says): (Now) this (announcement) pleased them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed at (their waywardness).

[Machine] "When the Prophet ﷺ besieged the people of Taif and was unable to overcome them, he said, 'We will depart tomorrow, God willing.' It seemed that the Muslims disliked this, so he said, 'March forward.' They marched forward for battle and some of them were wounded. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We will depart tomorrow, God willing.' The Muslims felt relieved, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ trapped the people of Ta'if, as if he did not receive anything from them. He said, "We will leave, if Allah wills." The Muslims said, "Should we leave without conquering it?" He said, "March towards battle." So they set out and were wounded. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will leave, as if they desired that." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed.

The Muslims said: "How can we go without achieving victory?" The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Prepare for battle in the morning." They prepared and attacked them, and they were wounded. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "We will march tomorrow." They were amazed by that, so the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , laughed.
