I asked Ibn 'Umar about (the preparation of) Nabidh in a green pitcher (besmeared with pitch), whereupon he said that Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the (preparation of) Nabidh in green pitcher (besmeared with pitch). I then came to Ibn Abbas and said: Do you hear what Ibn 'Umar has said? Thereupon he said: What does he say? I said: He stated that Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden the (preparation of) Nabidh in a green pitcher (besmeared with pitch), whereupon he said: Ibn 'Umar has told the truth. Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared unlawful the preparation of Nabidh in a green pitcher (besmeared with pitch). I said: What is this thing, the Nabidh of a pitcher (Nabidh prepared in a pitcher)? Thereupon, he said: Everything that is prepared in earthen pitcher.

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلاَ تَسْمَعُ مَا يَقُولُ ابْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ وَمَا يَقُولُ قُلْتُ قَالَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ فَقُلْتُ وَأَىُّ شَىْءٍ نَبِيذُ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ كُلُّ شَىْءٍ يُصْنَعُ مِنَ الْمَدَرِ

"We asked Ibn 'Umar about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade that.' So I went to Ibn 'Abbas and said to him: 'Today I heard something that surprised me.' He said: 'What was it?' I said: 'I asked Ibn 'Umar about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar and he said: The Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade it.' He said: 'Ibn 'Umar spoke the truth.' I said: 'What is an earthenware jar?' He said: 'Anything that is made of clay.'"

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ سَمِعْتُ الْيَوْمَ شَيْئًا عَجِبْتُ مِنْهُ قَالَ مَا هُوَ قُلْتُ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ قُلْتُ مَا الْجَرُّ قَالَ كُلُّ شَىْءٍ مِنْ مَدَرٍ

"I was with Ibn 'Umar when he was asked about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade it.' I got upset when I heard that, so I went to Ibn 'Abbas and said: 'Ibn 'Umar was asked about something, and I found it difficult.' He said: 'What was it?' I said: 'He was asked about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar.' He said: 'He spoke the truth; the Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade it.' I said: 'What is an earthenware jar?' He said: 'Anything that is made of clay.'"

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَشَقَّ عَلَىَّ لَمَّا سَمِعْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ سُئِلَ عَنْ شَىْءٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أُعَظِّمُهُ قَالَ مَا هُوَ قُلْتُ سُئِلَ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ وَمَا الْجَرُّ قَالَ كُلُّ شَىْءٍ صُنِعَ مِنْ مَدَرٍ

[AI] About the wine, the Prophet ﷺ forbade it. So, I met Ibn Abbas and informed him about Ibn Umar's statement. He replied, "Abu Abdillah (Ibn Umar) spoke the truth."

[AI] He heard Ibn Umar saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited the wine made from dates. So, I met Ibn Abbas and said to him, "Are you not amazed by Abu Abdullah (Ibn Umar) who claims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited the wine made from dates?" Ibn Abbas said, "He is telling the truth." So I asked, "What is 'al-jarr'?" He said, "It is what is made from unripe dates."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ قَالَ فَلَقِيتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا تَعْجَبُ مِنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حَرَّمَ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ صَدَقَ فَقُلْتُ وَمَا الْجَرُّ؟ قَالَ مَا يُصْنَعُ مِنَ الْمَدَرِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited the drinking of wine. He said, "I went to Abdullah ibn Abbas and informed him. He said, 'Ibn Umar is telling the truth.' I asked, 'What is wine?' He said, 'Anything made from grapes.'"

حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ نَبِيذَ الْجَرِّ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا الْجَرُّ؟ قَالَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ يُصْنَعُ مِنَ الْمَدَرِ

[AI] About wine, the Prophet ﷺ prohibited it. So, I went to Ibn Abbas and asked him about wine. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited it." Abu Abdur Rahman spoke the truth." I said, "What is 'jar'?" He said, "Anything that intoxicates."

[AI] I heard Ibn Umar saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the drinking of wine. So, I went to Ibn Abbas and mentioned this to him. He said, "That is true." I asked, "What is wine?" He replied, "Every drink that is made from dates."

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا الْجَرُّ؟ قَالَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ صُنِعَ مِنْ مَدَرٍ

[AI] About the wine, the Prophet ﷺ said, "That is one of the things which Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have forbidden." So I went to Ibn Abbas and said to him, "Indeed, Ibn Umar was asked about wine and he said, 'That is one of the things which Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have forbidden.'" Ibn Abbas confirmed and said, "He was right." Then I asked him, "What is 'jar'?" He replied, "Anything that intoxicates."

عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ﷺ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ سُئِلَ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ فَقَالَ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ صَدَقَ فَقُلْتُ وَمَا الْجَرُّ؟ قَالَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْ مَدَرٍ «

[AI] I heard Ibn Umar say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited the drinking of Nebeeth made from grapes." So I went to Ibn Abbas and mentioned that to him, and he said, "Ibn Umar spoke the truth." I asked, "What is the meaning of Al-Jarr?" He said, "It is the liquid that comes from dates."

سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرُ يَقُولُ «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ» فَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «صَدَقَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ» قُلْتُ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ الْجَرُّ؟ قَالَ «مِنْ مَدَرٍ»
