"قَدْ تَرَكْتُكُمْ عَلَى البَيضَاءِ، لَيلُهَا كَنَهَارها، ولا يِزَيغُ عَنْهَا بَعدِى إلا هَالِكٌ، وَمَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكمْ بَعْدى فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلافًا كَثيرًا، فَعَلَيكُم بمَا عَرَفْتُمْ مِنْ سُنَّتِى، وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاء الرَّاشِدِينَ الْمَهْديِّينَ، عَضُّوا عَلَيهَا بِالنَّواجِد، وَعَلَيكمْ بِالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ عَبْدًا حَبَشِيًّا، فَإِنَّ الْمُؤمِنَ كَالْجَمَلِ الأَنِفِ حَيثُمَا قِيدَ انْقَادَ".
"One day after the morning Salat, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ exhorted us to the extent that the eyes wept and the hearts shuddered with fear. A man said: 'Indeed this is a farewell exhortation. [So what] do you order us O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'I order you to have Taqwa of Allah, and to listen and obey, even in the case of an Ethiopian slave. Indeed, whomever among you lives, he will see much difference. Beware of the newly invented matters, for indeed they are astray. Whoever among you sees that, then he must stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafa', cling to it with the molars.'"
وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا بَعْدَ صَلاَةِ الْغَدَاةِ مَوْعِظَةً بَلِيغَةً ذَرَفَتْ مِنْهَا الْعُيُونُ وَوَجِلَتْ مِنْهَا الْقُلُوبُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ إِنَّ هَذِهِ مَوْعِظَةُ مُوَدِّعٍ فَمَاذَا تَعْهَدُ إِلَيْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أُوصِيكُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ وَالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ عَبْدٌ حَبَشِيٌّ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ يَرَى اخْتِلاَفًا كَثِيرًا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الأُمُورِ فَإِنَّهَا ضَلاَلَةٌ فَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ ذَلِكَ مِنْكُمْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ
He heard Al-'Irbad bin Sariyah say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a moving speech to us which made our eyes flow with tears and made our hearts melt. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah. This is a speech of farewell. What did you enjoin upon us?' He said: 'I am leaving you upon a (path of) brightness whose night is like its day. No one will deviate from it after I am gone but one who is doomed. Whoever among you lives will see great conflict. I urge you to adhere to what you know of my Sunnah and the path of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, and cling stubbornly to it. And you must obey, even if (your leader is) an Abyssinian leader. For the true believer is like a camel with a ring in its nose; wherever it is driven, it complies."

AbdurRahman ibn Amr as-Sulami and Hujr ibn Hujr said: We came to Irbad ibn Sariyah who was among those about whom the following verse was revealed: "Nor (is there blame) on those who come to thee to be provided with mounts, and when thou saidst: "I can find no mounts for you." We greeted him and said: We have come to see you to give healing and obtain benefit from you. Al-Irbad said: One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, then faced us and gave us a lengthy exhortation at which the eyes shed tears and the hearts were afraid. A man said: Messenger of Allah! It seems as if it were a farewell exhortation, so what injunction do you give us? He then said: I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey even if it be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon that made our eyes shed tears and our hearts tremble. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is a farewell sermon, so advise us." He said, "I advise you to have taqwa (piety) of Allah, to listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave becomes your leader. Verily, he among you who lives long will see great differences, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs after me. Bite onto it with your molar teeth, and beware of newly-invented matters, for every innovation is a misguidance."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a sermon that touched the hearts and brought tears to the eyes. So we said, "O Messenger of Allah, it seems like a farewell sermon, so advise us." He said, "I advise you to have taqwa (fearfulness) of Allah, to listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave becomes your leader. After me, you will see many differences, so adhere to my Sunnah (way) and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs. Bite onto it with your molars and beware of newly-innovated matters, for every newly-innovated matter is misguidance."
وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَوْعِظَةً وَجَلَّتْ مِنْهَا الْقُلُوبُ وَذَرَفَتْ مِنْهَا الْأَعْيُنُ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَأَنَّهَا مَوْعِظَةُ مُوَدِّعٍ فَاعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللهِ وَالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَبْدًا حَبَشِيًّا فَمَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ بَعْدِي فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُورِ وَكُلُّ مُحْدَثَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ»
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once gave us a profound sermon that made our eyes shed tears and our hearts tremble. A man from the Muslims said, "It seems like this sermon is a farewell sermon. So what instructions do you leave for us, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "I have left you upon a clear path, its night is as bright as its day. No one deviates from it after me except that they will be destroyed. And whoever among you lives will witness much disagreement. So beware of innovation and adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Bite onto it with your molars. And you must also listen and obey, even if your leader is an Ethiopian slave."
وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ مَوْعِظَةً بَلِيغَةً ذَرَفَتْ مِنْهَا الْعُيُونُ وَوَجِلَتْ مِنْهَا الْقُلُوبُ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَأَنَّ هَذِهِ مَوْعِظَةَ مُوَدِّعٍ فَمَاذَا تَعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُكُمْ عَلَى الْبَيْضَاءِ لَيْلُهَا كَنَهَارِهَا لَا يَزِيغُ عَنْهَا بَعْدِي مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا هَالِكٌ وَأَنَّهُ مَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ يَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا فَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْبِدَعَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَبْدًا حَبَشِيًّا»
"أُوصِيكُمْ بتَقْوَى اللَّهِ والسَّمْعِ والطَّاعَة، وَإنْ أُمِّرَ عَلَيكُمْ عَبْدٌ حَبَشِىٌّ، فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ يَعِش مِنكُمْ بَعْدى فَسَيَرى اخْتَلافًا كثِيرًا، فَعَلَيكم بسُنَّتِى وسُنَّةِ الخُلَفَاءِ الْمَهْديّينَ الرَّاشِدِين، تَمَسَّكوا بهَا، وَعَضُّوا عَلَيْها بالنَّوَاجذ، وَإياكُم ومُحْدثَات الأُمور فَإنَّ كُلَّ مُحْدَثَةٍ بدْعَةٌ، وَكُلَّ بدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَة ".
"لَقدْ تَرَكْتُكُم عَلَى الْبَيضَاء، لَيلُها كَنَهَارِهَا، لَا يَزيغُ عَنْها بَعْدِى إِلَّا هَالِكٌ، ومَنْ يَعْش مِنْكم فَسَيَرى اختلافًا كَثيرًا، فَعَلَيكم بما عَرفْتُم من سُنَّتى، وَسُنَّةِ الخُلفَاءِ الْمهْدِيِّينَ الرَّاشدين، وَعَليكم بِالطَّاعَةِ، وَإِنْ عَبْدًا حَبَشيًّا، عَضُّوا عَلَيها بالنَّواجِذِ فَإِنَّما المؤمِنُ كَالْجَمَلِ الأَنِفِ حَيثُما قِيدَ انْقَادَ".
