"If something was brought to him, the prophet would ask whether it was a gift or charity. If it was said that if was charity, he would not eat, and if it was said that it was a gift, he would stretch forth his hand."

Whenever a meal was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask whether it was a gift or Sadaqa (something given in charity). If he was told that it was Sadaqa, he would tell his companions to eat it, but if it was a gift, he would hurry to share it with them.

Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with food, he asked about it, If he was told that it was a gift, he ate out of that, and if he was told that it was a sadaqa he did not eat out of that.

[Machine] Abu Huraira said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "When food that does not belong to his family is brought to him, he would ask about it. If he was told that it was a gift, he would eat it. And if he was told that it was charity, he would say, 'Eat and do not eat.'"

[Machine] The translation of the passage is as follows: "When the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was brought food from someone other than his household, he would ask about it. If he was told it was a gift, he would eat it. But if he was told it was charity, he would say, 'Eat it,' and he would not eat it himself."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to ask if something brought to him was a gift or charity. If they said it was a gift, he would extend his hand to receive it. And if they said it was charity, he would say to his companions, "Take it and give it as charity." This hadith has a similar meaning to the one narrated by Muhammad ibn Ziyad from Abu Hurairah.
