A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the picking up of a "Luqata" (fallen lost thing). The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Recognize and remember its tying material and its container, and make public announcement (about it) for one year, then utilize it but give it to its owner if he comes." Then the person asked about the lost camel. On that, the Prophet ﷺ got angry and his cheeks or his Face became red and he said, "You have no concern with it as it has its water container, and its feet and it will reach water, and eat (the leaves) of trees till its owner finds it." The man then asked about the lost sheep. The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is either for you, for your brother (another person) or for the wolf."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا أَوْ قَالَ وِعَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ فَغَضِبَ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوْ قَالَ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ فَقَالَ وَمَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَرْعَى الشَّجَرَ فَذَرْهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recognize its container and its tying material and then make a public announcement about it for one year and if its owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise use it as you like." The man said, "What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is for you, your brother or the wolf." The man said "What about a lost camel?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why should you take it as it has got its water-container (its stomach) and its hooves and it can reach the places of water and can eat the trees till its owner finds it?"

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلاَّ فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ مَالَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

A bedouin went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about picking up a lost thing. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Make public announcement about it for one year. Remember the description of its container and the string with which it is tied; and if somebody comes and claims it and describes it correctly, (give it to him); otherwise, utilize it." He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is for you, for your brother (i.e. its owner), or for the wolf." He further asked, "What about a lost camel?" On that the face of the Prophet ﷺ became red (with anger) and said, "You have nothing to do with it, as it has its feet, its water reserve and can reach places of water and drink, and eat trees."

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَمَّا يَلْتَقِطُهُ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ احْفَظْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ بِهَا وَإِلاَّ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ ضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ فَتَمَعَّرَ وَجْهُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ

A man came and asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about picking a lost thing. It has its water-container (reservoir) and its feet, and it will reach water and drink it and eat the trees till its owner finds it."

The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What about a lost sheep?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Take it, for it is for you, for your brother, or for the wolf." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What about a lost camel?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ got angry and his cheeks or face became red, and said, "You have no concern with it as it has its feet, and its watercontainer, till its owner finds it."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ قَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوِ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

A bedouin asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Luqata. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Make public announcement about it for one year and if then somebody comes and describes the container of the Luqata and the string it was tied with, (give it to him); otherwise, spend it." He then asked the Prophet ﷺ about a lost camel. The face of the Prophet ﷺ become red and he said, "You have o concern with it as it has its water reservoir and feet and it will reach water and drink and eat trees. Leave it till its owner finds it." He then asked the Prophet ﷺ about a lost sheep. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is for you, for your brother, or for the wolf."

أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ قَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ بِعِفَاصِهَا وَوِكَائِهَا وَإِلاَّ فَاسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الإِبِلِ فَتَمَعَّرَ وَجْهُهُ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ دَعْهَا حَتَّى يَجِدَهَا رَبُّهَا وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ

A man asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about "Al-Luqata" (a lost fallen purse or a thing picked up by somebody). The Prophet ﷺ said, "You should announce it publicly for one year, and then remember and recognize the tying material of its container, and then you can spend it. If its owner came to you, then you should pay him its equivalent." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet said, "Take it because it is for you, for your brother, or for the wolf." The man again said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What about a lost camel?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ became very angry and furious and his cheeks became red (or his face became red), and he said, "You have nothing to do with it (the camel) for it has its food and its water container with it till it meets its owner."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوِ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَالَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

A man came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and asked him about picking up of stray articles. He said: Recognise (well) its bag and the strap (by which it is tied) then make announcement of that for a year. If its owner comes (within this time return that to him), otherwise it is yours. He (again) said: (What about) the lost goat? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: It is yours or for your brother, or for the wolf. He said: (What about) the lost camel? Thereupon he said: You have nothing to do with it; it has a leather bag along with it, and its shoes also. It comes to the watering-place, eats (the leaves of the) trees until its master finds him.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلاَّ فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا قَالَ يَحْيَى أَحْسِبُ قَرَأْتُ عِفَاصَهَا

Make announcement about it for a year, and recognise well the strap and the bag (containing that) ; then spend that; and if its owner comes, make him the payment of that. He (the inquirer) said: Messenger of Allah, what about the lost goat? he said: Take it, for that is yours or for your brother, or for the wolf. He (again) said: (What about) the lost camel? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was enraged until his cheeks became red (or his face became red) and then said: You have nothing to do about that; it has feet and a leather bag (to quench its thirst) until its owner finds it.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوِ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

Recognise well the strap and the bag (containing) that and then make an announcement regarding that for one year, but if none recognises it, then spend that and it would be a trust with you; and if someone comes one day to make demand of that, then pay that to him. He (the inquirer) asked about the lost camel, whereupon he said: You have nothing to do with that. Leave that alone, for it has feet and also a leather bag, it drinks water, and eats (the leaves) of the trees. He asked him about sheep, whereupon he said: Take it, it is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf.

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ الذَّهَبِ أَوِ الْوَرِقِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا وَلْتَكُنْ وَدِيعَةً عِنْدَكَ فَإِنْ جَاءَ طَالِبُهَا يَوْمًا مِنَ الدَّهْرِ فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الإِبِلِ فَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا دَعْهَا فَإِنَّ مَعَهَا حِذَاءَهَا وَسِقَاءَهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَجِدَهَا رَبُّهَا وَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ الشَّاةِ فَقَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (SWAS) about a find. He said: Make the matter known for a year, then note its string and its container and then use it for your purpose. Then if its owner comes, give it to him. He asked : Messenger of Allah, what about a stray sheep? He replied: Take it; that is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf. He again asked: Messenger of Allah, What about stray camels? The Messenger of Allah (SWAS) became angry so much so that his cheeks became red or ( the narrator is doubtful) his face became red. He replied: What have you to do with them? They have with them their feet and their stomachs (for drink) till their master comes to him.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوِ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ وَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا رَبُّهَا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about a find. He said: Make it known for a year. If its seeker comes, deliver it to him, otherwise note its container and its string. Then use it; if its seeker comes, deliver it to him.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ بَاغِيهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ وَإِلاَّ فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ بَاغِيهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ

"Make a public announcement about it for one year, if it is claimed then give it to him. Otherwise remember its sack, string, and its count. Then use it, and if its owner comes, give it to him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا وَإِلاَّ فَاعْرِفْ وِعَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِذَا جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا

He turned red, and he said: “What does it have to do with you? It has its feet and its water supply, it can go and drink water and eat from the trees until its owner finds it.” And he was asked about lost sheep, and he said: “Take it, for it will be for you or for your brother or for the wolf.” And he was asked about lost property and he said: “Remember the features of its leather bag and strap, and announce it for one year, then if someone claims it, describing it to you with those features (give it to him), otherwise incorporate it into your own wealth.”

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ سُئِلَ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الإِبِلِ فَغَضِبَ وَاحْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ وَقَالَ مَالَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا الْحِذَاءُ وَالسِّقَاءُ تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا وَسُئِلَ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ وَسُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ وَإِلاَّ فَاخْلِطْهَا بِمَالِكَ

He said: “Announce it for a year, then if someone describes it with its features, return it to him. If no one claims it, then remember the features of its leather bag and strap, and consume it (use it). Then if its owner comes along, give it to him.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ تُعْرَفْ فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ

[AI] "He (the Prophet) was asked or a man asked the Prophet about a lost sheep. He said, 'It belongs to you or to the wolf.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the lost camel?' He said, 'What do you and it have together? It has its saddle, its shoes, and it eats from the tips of the trees.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a leaf if I find it?' He said, 'Know its container, its ins and outs, and its quantity. Then, recognize it for a year. If its owner comes, return it to him. Otherwise, it belongs to you or you can enjoy it or something similar to that.'"

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ رَاعِي الْغَنَمِ؟ قَالَ هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي ضَالَّةِ رَاعِي الْإِبِلِ؟ قَالَ وَمَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا وَتَأْكُلُ مِنْ أَطْرَافِ الشَّجَرِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْوَرِقِ إِذَا وَجَدْتُهَا؟ قَالَ اعْلَمْ وِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَادْفَعْهَا إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَهِيَ لَكَ أَوْ اسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا أَوْ نَحْوَ هَذَا

"Make a public announcement about it for one year, if it is claimed then give it to him. Otherwise remember its sack, string, and its count. Then use it, and if its owner comes, give it to him." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1373)

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا وَإِلَّا فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا وَإِلَّا فَكُلْهَا فَإِنْ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا

He turned red, and he said: “What does it have to do with you? عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ فَغَضِبَ وَاحْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ وَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا الْحِذَاءُ وَالسِّقَاءُ تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَجِيءَ رَبُّهَا وَسُئِلَ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ وَسُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ اعْتُرِفَتْ وَإِلَّا فَاخْلِطْهَا بِمَالِكَ

[AI] An Arab man came to the Prophet ﷺ with a captured animal and said, "Identify its year and then identify its owner and protector. If someone comes to inform you about it, but if not, then you may keep it." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what about a lost sheep?" He replied, "It belongs to you, your brother, or the wolf." The man asked, "What about a lost camel?" The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed and he said, "What is the matter with you and the camel? It has its shoes and water container, it returns to water and eats from the trees."

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِلُقَطَةٍ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ بِهَا وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ؟ قَالَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَارَسُولَ اللهِ ضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ؟ قَالَ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا؟ مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about a find. He said: Make it known for a year. If its seeker comes, deliver it to him, otherwise note its container and its string. Then use it; if its seeker comes, deliver it to him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1706)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ بَاغِيهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ بَاغِيهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ

Malik related to me from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman from Yazid, the mawla of al-Munbaith that Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about finds. He said, 'Memorize the characteristics of the object found, then publicise it for a year. If the owner comes, give it to him. If not, then it is your business.' He said, 'What about lost sheep, Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'They are yours, your brother's or the wolf's.' He said, 'And the lost camel?' He said, 'It's none of your concern. It has its water and its feet. It will reach water and eat trees until its owner finds it.' "

أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلاَّ فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الإِبِلِ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recognize its container and its tying material and then make a public announcement about it for one year and if its owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise use it as you like." The man said, "What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is for you, your brother or the wolf." The man said "What about a lost camel?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why should you take it as it has got its water-container (its stomach) and its hooves and it can reach the places of water and can eat the trees till its owner finds it?" أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ «لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا»

[AI] He said: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was with him, and he asked him about the stray livestock. He said, 'Know its brand and its shepherd, then announce it for a year.' He said, 'If no one claims it, then you may spend it.' He asked, 'What about the stray sheep?' He said, 'It belongs to you, your brother, or the wolf.' He asked, 'What about the stray camel?' He said, 'It has its vessel for water and its shoes for traveling, it will eat from the trees until its owner comes to claim it.'"

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَى رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ قَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً» قَالَ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ؟ قَالَ «لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ؟ قَالَ «مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا رَبُّهَا»

[AI] A man asked the Messenger of Allahﷺ about a stray camel. He said, "What is its condition and what does it have with it in terms of its water container and saddle shoes? Leave it to eat from the trees and drink water until its owner comes to get it." The man then asked him about a stray sheep, and the Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "It belongs to you, your brother, or the wolf." Then he asked him about a lost object, and the Messenger of Allahﷺ said, "If you know its quantity, container, and contents, and its owner comes and recognizes its quantity, container, and contents, then give it to him. Otherwise, it belongs to you."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا فَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ وَتَرِدُ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا بَاغِيهَا» وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَعَرَفَ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ وَإِلَّا فَهِيَ لَكَ»

Make announcement of that for one year, but if it is not recognised (by the owner), then recognise its big and strap, then eat it; and if its owner comes, then give that to him. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Al-Dahhak b. Uthman with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words. (Using translation from Muslim 1722g)

سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ»

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). قَالَ وَسُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ ؟ فَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ وَسُئِلَ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ

"Make a public announcement about it for one year, if it is claimed then give it to him. Otherwise remember its sack, string, and its count. Then use it, and if its owner comes, give it to him." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1373)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ قَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَرَدَّهَا إِلَيْهِ»

He said: “Announce it for a year, then if someone describes it with its features, return it to him. If no one claims it, then remember the features of its leather bag and strap, and consume it (use it). Then if its owner comes along, give it to him.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2507)

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ فَأَدِّهَا وَإِلَّا فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا»

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik, from Rabiah ibn Abi Abdur Rahman, from Yazid, a client of Al-Munba'ath, from Zaid ibn Khalid al-Juhani, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about al-Luqatah (lost and found items). He said, "Know its description and its container, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, give it to him, otherwise it is yours."

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ رَبِيعَةِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى الْمُنْبَعِثِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنُكَ بِهَا»

[AI] Al-Qa'ani narrated on the authority of Malik, who narrated from Rabia ibn Abi Abdul Rahman, who narrated from Yazid, the freed slave of Munnabith, who narrated from Zaid ibn Khalid al-Juhani. He said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about al-Luqatah (lost and found items). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verify its description and mark, and then recognize it for a year. If its owner comes, return it to him. If not, then it is yours.'"

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ رَبِيعَةِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى الْمُنْبَعِثِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنُكَ بِهَا»

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik who narrated from Rabiah ibn Abi Abdur-Rahman who narrated from Yazid, the servant of al-Munba'ith, who narrated from Zaid ibn Khalid al-Juhani who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about Luqatah (lost property). He said: "Identify its container and its string, then describe it for a year. If its owner comes, then give it to him, otherwise, it is yours."

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ رَبِيعَةِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ مَوْلَى الْمُنْبَعِثِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنُكَ بِهَا»

[AI] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about al-Luqatah (lost and found items)." He replied: "Recognize its container and its laces, then publicize it for a year. If its owner comes, return it to him. If not, then make use of it."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ أَتَى بَاغِيهَا فَرُدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Inform me about picking up lost items (Luqatah)." He said, "Identify its fringe and its tying, then publicize it for a year. If its rightful owner comes, give it back to him. Otherwise, spend it."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ أَتَى بَاغِيهَا فَرُدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Tell me about the lost object." He said, "Know its buckle and string, then describe it for a year. If its owner comes, return it to him, otherwise, spend it."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ؟ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ أَتَى بَاغِيهَا فَرُدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was with him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I found a lost item." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Inform about it for a year, and if no one claims it, then spend it (for yourself)."

أَتَى رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اللُّقَطَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I was with him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with this extra money?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Identify it for a year, and if no one comes seeking it, then spend it."

أَتَى رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اللُّقَطَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was with him, and he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I found a lost object.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Inform about it for a year, and if no one claims it, then you may spend it.'"

أَتَى رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اللُّقَطَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا»

[AI] A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about a lost camel. He said, "Why do you care about it? It has its water bag and shoes with it. Let it eat from the trees until its owner finds it." He was then asked about a lost sheep, and he said, "Take it, for it belongs to you, your brother, or the wolf."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ فَقَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا؟ مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا دَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا» وَسُئِلَ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ؟ فَقَالَ «خُذْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ»

[AI] A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the lost camel and asked him about the found camel. He said, "Know its humps, its bridle, and its number. Then describe it publicly for a year. If its owner comes, and he describes its humps, its bridle, and its number, then give it to him."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ وَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ قَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا عَامًا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَعَرَفَ عِفَاصَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَأَعْطِهِ إِيَّاهَا»

[AI] "The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the found item, so he said, 'Identify its container and its tie, and announce it for a year. If it is claimed, give it back to its owner; otherwise, mix it with your own property.'"

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنِ اعْتُرِفَتْ وَإِلَّا فَاخْلِطْهَا بِمَالِكَ»

[AI] A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Luqata (lost and found items), so he said, "Announce it for a year, then recognize its description and features, then spend it. If its owner comes, give it back to him." Abu Abdul Rahman told us, and this hadith was narrated from Ismail bin Umayyah from Rabee'ah from Abdullah bin Yazid from a man sent with another wording.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ» قَالَ لَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مُرْسَلٍ بِلَفْظٍ آخَرَ

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked about Al-Luqata (a fallen thing). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Recognize its container and its tying material and then make a public announcement about it for one year and if its owner shows up, give it to him; otherwise use it as you like." The man said, "What about a lost sheep?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is for you, your brother or the wolf." The man said "What about a lost camel?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why should you take it as it has got its water-container (its stomach) and its hooves and it can reach the places of water and can eat the trees till its owner finds it?" (Using translation from Bukhārī 2372)

[AI] He heard Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about picking up gold or silver. He said, 'Acquire knowledge about its markings and specifications, and then identify it for a year. If it is not recognized, then spend it and let it be a trust with you. If its seeker comes one day, return it to him.' This narration is mentioned in Sahih from the Hadith of Sulaiman bin Bilal.

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ الذَّهَبِ أَوِ الْوَرِقِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ تُعْرَفْ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا وَلْتَكُنْ وَدِيعَةً عِنْدَكَ فَإِنْ جَاءَ طَالِبُهَا يَوْمًا مِنَ الدَّهْرِ فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بِلَالٍ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was asked about the stray animal, so he said: Define it for a year, then if it still remains unknown, define its look and its marks, and then consume it all. But if its owner comes, return it to him.

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (SWAS) about a find. He said: Make the matter known for a year, then note its string and its container and then use it for your purpose. Then if its owner comes, give it to him. He asked : Messenger of Allah, what about a stray sheep? He replied: Take it; that is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf. He again asked: Messenger of Allah, What about stray camels? The Messenger of Allah (SWAS) became angry so much so that his cheeks became red or ( the narrator is doubtful) his face became red. He replied: What have you to do with them? They have with them their feet and their stomachs (for drink) till their master comes to him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1704)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ وِكَاءَهَا وَعِفَاصَهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَنْفِقْ بِهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ؟ قَالَ خُذْهَا؛ فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ؟ قَالَ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ أَوِ احْمَرَّ وَجْهُهُ قَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا؟ مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا وَقَالَ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَيُّوبَ دَعْهَا حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا

[AI] He said that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about "Al-Luqatah" (lost property). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Know its description and its container, then describe it for a year. If its owner comes, give it to him, otherwise, it is yours." This is mentioned in the authentic narration of Malik and its meaning.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ مَالِكٍ وَبِمَعْنَاهُ

[AI] An Arab came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about a lost sheep. The Prophet ﷺ told him to first describe it, then describe its size, its udder, and its drinking trough. If its owner comes, then give it to him, otherwise, spend it or enjoy it. The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what about a lost camel?" The Prophet's face changed and he said, "What do you have to do with it? It has its saddle and water container. It goes back to drinking and eating from trees. Leave it until it meets its owner."

جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً ثُمَّ اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَادْفَعْهَا إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا أَوِ اسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ وَقَالَ مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا؟ مَعَهَا حِذَاؤُهَا وَسِقَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ تَأَكُلُ الشَّجَرَ دَعْهَا حَتَّى تَلْقَى رَبَّهَا

[AI] "On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'Whoever finds a lost item, let them announce it for a year. If its owner comes, they should return it to him. If not, then let them announce its description and features, and then they may consume it. If its owner comes afterward, they should return it to him.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنِ الْتَقَطَ لُقَطَةً فَلْيُعَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ رَبُّهَا وَإِلَّا فَلْيَعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ لِيُأْكُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَلْيَرُدَّهَا عَلَيْهِ

"اعْرِف عِفاصَها، ووكاءَها، ثُمَّ عرِّفها سَنةً، فإِن جاءَ صاحبُها، وإلّا فشَأنَكَ بها، قِيلَ: فَضَالَّةُ الغَنمِ؟ قال: هي لك، أو لأخيك، أوْ للذئب، قِيلَ: فَضَالَّةُ الإِبل؟ قال: ما لك ولها؟ مَعَها سقَاؤُها وحِذاؤُها تَرِدُ الماءَ، وتأكلُ الشجرَ حتّى يلْقاها ربُّها" .
