I was in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the expedition of Tabuk. He abandoned the main road before the dawn prayer, and I also did the same along with him. The Prophet ﷺ made his camel kneel down and (went to ) relieve himself. He then came back and I poured water upon his hands from the skin-vessel. He then washed his hands and face. He tried to get his forearms out (of the gown), but the sleeves of the gown were too narrow, so he entered back both his hands, and brought them out from beneath the gown. He washed his forearms up to the elbows and wiped his head and wiped over his socks.80 He then mounted (his camel) and we began to proceed until we found people offering the prayer. They brought forward ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Awf who was leading them in prayer. The Prophet ﷺ stood in the row side by side with other Muslims. He performed the second rak’ah of the prayer behind ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Awf. Then ‘Abd al-Rahman uttered salutation. The Prophet ﷺ stood to perform the remaining rak’ah of the prayer. The Muslims were alarmed. They began to utter tasbih (Subhan Allah) presuming that they had offered prayer before the Prophet ﷺ had done. When he uttered the salutation (i.e. finished his prayer), he said: You were right, or (he said) you did well.

[Machine] He said, "I lagged behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Battle of Tabuk and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went ahead and returned to me while I had the water container with me. He said, 'Pour water for me to perform ablution.' So, I poured water for him to perform ablution, and he washed his face three times and then tried to wash his forearms, but as he reached the elbows, the water was running out. So, he sprinkled water over his arms and washed them three times and then passed his wet hands over his Khuffain (leather socks). Then he again sprinkled water over his arms. He then washed his feet thrice. When he wanted to wash his face for the fourth time, he said, 'I do not find water.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed his wet hands over his head and Khuffain and then washed his face with that water. When he went out and saw the people, he noticed that they had already performed the Asr prayer with 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Auf, and he said, 'What is this?' They replied, 'We have already prayed.' So, he said, 'Is there no other prayer for 'Aisha (your sister)?' They replied, 'We have not performed the prayer yet.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went towards the dwellings of Banu Quraiza and ascended a (high) place, and offered the Asr prayer. Then, he returned and said, 'Let any who has performed the prayer with us go back.'

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood out, then he came and I poured water over him from the ewer. He washed his face, then he went to wipe his arms and the sleeve of the Messenger of Allah's jubba (cloak) was too tight, which was made of Roman wool. So he put his hand in a slit at the waist of it and washed them to the elbows. Then he wiped his head and wiped over his socks. Then he turned and I was with him, and he found people praying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in the row, and 'Abdul Rahman ibn 'Awf led them in prayer. We caught up with him and he had already prayed one rak'ah, so we prayed the second one with 'Abdul Rahman. When he finished the prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and completed his prayer. The people were surprised by that. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, "You have done well when your imam was detained and the prayer came, by appointing someone to lead you in prayer."

The Prophet ﷺ caught up with one of the two Rak'ahs and prayed the last Rak'ah with the people. When 'Abdul-Rahman ibn 'Awf finished his prayer and said the Taslim, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to complete his prayer. This surprised the Muslims and they increased in glorification (saying Subhan Allah). When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he approached them and said, "You have done well" or "You were correct". He was pleased that they had performed the prayer at the correct time. Ibn Shihab said: Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'd narrated to me from Hamza ibn al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah with a similar narration to the Hadith of 'Abbad ibn Ziyad, and he added: Al-Mughirah said, "I wanted to inform 'Abdul-Rahman ibn 'Awf, but the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Leave him.' So I mentioned the matter to him (Ibn Shihab) in the same way."

[Machine] He informed him that he participated in the Battle of Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-Mughirah said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to relieve himself, and I had a water container with me before the Fajr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to me, I gave him the water container, and he washed his hands three times, then he washed his face. Then he began to unravel his sleeve from his arms, and his sleeves became tight. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ inserted his hands into the sleeve until his arms came out from under the sleeve, and he washed his arms up to the elbows. Then I saw him mention wiping over his ankles."

(Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 149)

[Machine] He informed him that he fought alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned the hadith in the story of the Prophet's ﷺ ablution and wiping on the two socks. He said, then he proceeded. Al-Mughira said, "So I followed him until people found that 'Abdul-Rahman ibn 'Awf had already led them in prayer. Ibn Juraij said, Ibn Shihab narrated this from Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'd from Hamza ibn al-Mughira, in a similar narration to the hadith of 'Abbad. Al-Mughira said, "I intended to delay 'Abdul-Rahman ibn 'Awf." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave him."
