16. Book of Religious Battles
“A group of us Companions of the Messenger of Allah sat talking, and we said: ‘If we knew which deed was most beloved to Alllah then we would do it.’ So Allah, Most High, revealed: Whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth glorifies Allah. And He is Almighty, the All-Wise. O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do?” Abdullah bin Salam said: “So the Messenger of Allah recited it to us.” Abu Salamah (one of the narrators) said: “So Ibn Salam recited it to us.” Yahya (one of the narrators) said: “So Abu Salamah narrated it to us.” Ibn Kathir said: “So Al-Awza’i recited it to us.” Abdullah said: “So Ibn Kathir recited it to us.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3309)
16.2 [Machine] The Virtues of Jihad
Allah has undertaken to provide for one who leaves his home (only) to fight for His cause and to affirm the truth of His word; Allah will either admit him to Paradise or will bring him back home from where he had come out, with his reward and booty. (Using translation from Muslim 1876c)
16.3 [Machine] Which type of jihad is the best?
“I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which Jihad is best?’ He said: ‘(That of a man) whose blood is shed and his horse is wounded.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2794)
16.4 [Machine] Which deeds are the best?
The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which is the best deed?" He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle." He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?" He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." He was then asked, "Which is the next?" He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur. " (Using translation from Bukhārī 1519)
16.5 [Machine] Who fought in the cause of Allah over a camel
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever fights in the cause of Allah and endures as much as the milking of a camel, Paradise is guaranteed for him, as much as the quantity of its milk for the one who milks it."
16.6 [Machine] The best people are those who hold onto the reins of their horse in the way of Allah.
"Shall I not tell you of the best of the people in status?" We said: "Yes. O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "A man who rides his horse in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until he dies or is killed. Shall I not tell you of the one who comes after him (in status)?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said; "A man who withdraws to a mountain pass and establishes Salah, and pays Zakah, and keeps away from the evil of people. Shall I not tell you of the worst of people?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "The one who asks for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, but does not give (when he is asked) for His sake," (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2569)

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The position of a man in the row (of soldiers) in the cause of Allah is better than sixty years of worship by a man.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever dirties his feet in the path of Allah, Allah will forbid him from the Fire."
16.9 [Machine] Al-Ghadwah and Al-Rawhah in the path of Allah
“Going out in the morning in the cause of Allah, or in the evening, is more virtuous than the world and what is in it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2755)
16.10 [Machine] Whoever fasts for a day in the cause of Allah.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "There is no servant who fasts a day seeking the face of Allah except that Allah will distance his face from the Fire by a distance equivalent to seventy autumns."
16.11 [Machine] In the one who remains awake in the path of Allah as a guard
[Machine] He (saw) was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a battle when he heard him say one night, "The Fire is forbidden for an eye that stayed awake in the cause of Allah, and the Fire is forbidden for an eye that shed tears out of fear of Allah." He said, "And the third type, I have forgotten it." Abu Shuraih said, "I have heard someone say that it means, 'The Fire is forbidden for an eye that turned away from what Allah has prohibited, or an eye that shed tears in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.'"
16.12 [Machine] In the Virtue of Spending in the Path of Allah
It is (offered) in the way of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: For this you will have seven hundred she-camels on the Day of Judgment all of which will be muzzled. (Using translation from Muslim 1892a)
16.13 [Machine] Whoever spends from his wealth for the sake of Allah, [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 245]
[Machine] I met Abu Dhar while he was driving his camel or leading it by its neck. I said, "Abu Dhar, what is the matter with you?" He said, "My livelihood." I asked him again, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "My livelihood." I asked him to narrate to me a hadith that he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'No Muslim spends two coins in the way of Allah except that a curtain from Paradise will be drawn for him.'" Abu Muhammad said, "It could be two dirhams, two hundred dirhams, two slaves, or two mounts."
16.14 [Machine] In the virtues of archery and commanding it
[Machine] He recited this verse: "And prepare against them whatever power you can and horses tied at the frontier" [Surah Al-Anfal 60]. Surely, the power lies in hurling.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah Almighty admits the three who die in the same battle by a single arrow into Paradise. He is the Creator of it, and He counts the good that they did, the one who provided it, and the one who shot it."
16.15 [Machine] In the Virtue of those Injured in the Path of Allah
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'There is no person who is wounded in the cause of Allah, Almighty and Exalted, except that Allah, Almighty and Exalted, will send him on the Day of Resurrection and his wound will emit the fragrance of musk and its color will be the color of blood.'"
16.16 [Machine] Who has asked Allah for martyrdom?
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone asks Allah for martyrdom sincerely, Allah will make him reach the ranks of martyrs even if he died on his bed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1520)
16.17 [Machine] In the virtue of the martyr
“The martyr does not feel anything more when he is killed than one of you feels if he is pinched (by a bug).” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2802)
16.18 [Machine] What does the martyr wish for when returning to the world?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no soul that enters Paradise and wishes that it could return to you, even if it had all of the world and everything in it, except for the martyr. Indeed, the martyr wishes that he could be killed and brought back to life repeatedly due to what he has seen of the rewards."
16.19 [Machine] The Souls of the Martyrs
[Machine] "Regarding the souls of the martyrs, if it were not for Abdullah, no one would have informed us. He said that the souls of the martyrs are with Allah on the Day of Judgment in the bodies of green birds, with lanterns hanging from the throne, freely roaming in the gardens of paradise as they please. Then they return to their lanterns, and their Lord honors them and asks, 'Do you have any need? Is there anything you desire?' They respond, 'No, except that we want to return to the world and be killed again.'"
16.20 [Machine] In the Status of Martyrs in the Path of Allah
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The martyrs are three: one who fought with his life and wealth in the way of Allah, and fought until he was killed. The Prophet ﷺ said about him, 'He is the praised martyr in the tent of Allah, beneath His throne. The Prophets do not surpass him except by the degree of prophethood.' And there is a believer who mixed good deeds with bad ones, and fought with his life and wealth in the way of Allah, and fought until he was killed." The Prophet ﷺ said about him, "There is a garment that will wash away his sins. Indeed, the sword erases sins, and he enters Paradise through any door of Paradise he wishes." And there is a hypocrite who fought with his life and wealth, and when he met the enemy, he fought until he was killed. The Prophet ﷺ said about him, "He is in the Fire. Indeed, the sword does not erase hypocrisy." Abdullah said, "It is said about a garment when it is washed, it is squeezed."
16.21 [Machine] Whoever fights in the cause of Allah with patience and expectation
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and delivered a sermon in which he praised and glorified Allah. Then he mentioned Jihad and said that there is nothing superior to it except for obligatory acts of worship. A man stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about someone who is killed in the cause of Allah? Will that erase his sins?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes, if he was patient, seeking reward from Allah, and not retreating from the battlefield, except for a debt. Indeed, it will be taken from him, as Gabriel ﷺ informed me."
16.22 [Machine] What counts as martyrs
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "The plague is a martyrdom, drowning is a martyrdom, participating in a battle is a martyrdom, and childbirth and what a woman faces during childbirth are also martyrdom."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Being killed in the way of Allah is martyrdom, and dying due to a widespread disease is martyrdom, and death due to a stomach disease is martyrdom, and a woman being killed by her child is also martyrdom."
16.23 [Machine] What the Prophet's companions encountered in their battles from hardship
[Machine] "We used to go on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no food except for dates and the leaves of Hurbah, to the extent that one of us would place his hand on his stomach like a sheep because of hunger. Then, the Banu Asad became strong and they started to oppress me. I felt weak and my work was lost."

The Prophet ﷺ said: Fighting is of two kinds: The one who seeks Allah's favour, obeys the leader, gives the property he values, treats his associates gently and avoids doing mischief, will have the reward for all the time whether he is asleep or awake; but the one who fights in a boasting spirit, for the sake of display and to gain a reputation, who disobeys the leader and does mischief in the earth will not return credit or without blame. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2515)
