Punishment for wrongfully taking from zakat funds

bukhari:7174ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Sufyān > al-Zuhrī > ʿUrwah > Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī

The Prophet ﷺ appointed a man from Banu Asad, called Ibn al-Utbiyyah, to collect charity. When he returned, he said, “This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift.”

So the Prophet ﷺ stood on the pulpit —Sufyan also said: he ascended the pulpit— then he praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: “What is the matter with an agent whom we send out, and he comes back saying, ‘This is for you and this is for me’? Why did he not sit in the house of his father and mother and see whether gifts would be given to him or not? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he does not bring anything except that he will come with it on the Day of Resurrection carrying it on his neck: if it is a camel, it will have a braying; or a cow, it will have a lowing; or a sheep, it will bleat.”

Then he raised his hands until we could see the whiteness of his armpits, saying three times: “Have I conveyed ˹the message˺?”

Sufyān said: Al-Zuhrī related it to us, and Hishām added—on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abū Ḥumayd—who said: My ears heard it and my eyes saw it; and ask Zayd ibn Thābit, for he heard it with me. But al-Zuhrī did not say: “My ear heard.” “Khuwwār” means a sound, and “al-ju’ār” comes from “you bellow,” like the sound of a cow.
