23.81 Placing a leaf of a date palm over the grave

[Machine] Buraida Al-Aslami advised that two newspapers be placed in his grave. Ibn Umar saw a mat spread over the grave of Abdur Rahman and said, "Remove it, O boy, for only his deeds will provide shade for him." Kharijah bin Zaid said, "I saw myself as a youth during the time of Uthman, and the strongest of us couldn't step on the grave of Uthman bin Mazh'un without stumbling." Uthman bin Hakim held my hand and made me sit on a grave, and he informed me about his uncle Yazid bin Thabit. He said, "Doing so is disliked for the one who is buried." Nafi' said, "Ibn Umar never used to sit on graves."

The Prophet ﷺ once passed by two graves, and those two persons (in the graves) were being tortured. He said, "They are being tortured not for a great thing (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other went about committing slander (to make enmity between friends). He then took a green leaf of a date-palm tree split it into two pieces and fixed one on each grave. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Why have you done so?" He replied, "I hope that their punishment may be lessened till they (the leaf) become dry."
