23.56 The legal way of offering the funeral prayer

[Machine] And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays upon the deceased." And he said: "Pray upon your companion." And he said: "Pray upon the Negus." He called it a prayer, in which there is no bowing or prostration, and one does not speak in it, and it includes takbir and salutation. Ibn 'Umar used to not pray unless he was in a state of purity. And he would not pray at sunrise or sunset, and he would raise his hands, and Al-Hasan said: I have witnessed people and the most deserving of leading their funeral prayers is the one who is pleased with them in fulfilling their obligations. And when he hears of the death of someone on the day of Eid or during a funeral, he asks for water and does not perform ablution, and when he joins them during their prayer, he enters with a takbir. And Ibn Al-Musayyib said that he would say takbirs in the morning, evening, during travel, and during being resident, four times. And Anas said: The first takbir is the opening of the prayer. And he said: "And do not pray upon any of them who have died, forever." And it includes rows and an imam.

Ash-Shuʿbi said, "Somebody who passed along with your Prophet ﷺ by a grave that was separate from the other graves informed me (saying), "The Prophet ﷺ led us (in the prayer) and we aligned behind him." We said, "O Abu ʿAmr! Who told you this narration?" He replied, "Ibn ʿAbbas."
