The complaint against Sa'd in Kufa

bazzar:952Abū ʿAbdullāh > Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. Ayyūb > Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd al-Khāliq al-Baṣrī, known as al-Bazzār > Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Qurashī > Abū ʿAwānah > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr > Jābir b. Samurah

[AI] The people of Kufa complained about Sa'd in every matter, until they even said that he did not pray properly. He said: Umar sent for him and said: They have complained about you in every matter, until they claimed that you do not pray properly. Sa'd said: By Allah, I used to lead them in the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and would not fall short of it. I would pray the Isha prayer, remaining steady in the first two rak'ahs and making the last two brief. He said: That is the opinion we have of you, Abu Ishaq. So he sent with him one man, or two men, to ask the people of Kufa about him.

When he came to him, he did not leave any mosque without asking its people, and they would mention good and speak well of him, until he came to a mosque belonging to Banu Abs. A man from among them, known by the kunya Abu Sa'dah, stood and said: Since you have adjured us, Sa'd would not go out with the military detachment, would not judge fairly in a case, and would not distribute equally. Sa'd stood and said: By Allah, I shall surely supplicate against you with supplications: O Allah, if this servant of Yours is lying, then lengthen his life, intensify his poverty, and expose him to trials.

Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr said: I saw him after that as a very old man, afflicted by trials; when he was asked how he was in the morning, he would say: An old, poor man afflicted by trials; the supplication of Sa'd has struck me. Sa'd said: I saw him exposing himself to young women in the roads, pinching them, while his eyebrows had fallen over his eyes from old age.

This hadith, to our knowledge, is not narrated with this wording except from Sa'd, and we do not know that Jaber ibn Samurah narrated from Sa'd any hadith other than this one. Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr and Abu Awn narrated it from Jaber ibn Samurah; Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated it to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abd al-Malik and Abu Awn, from Jaber ibn Samurah, with wording similar to the hadith of Abu Awanah from Abd al-Malik. Ja'far ibn Awn, the nephew of Waki', narrated it to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, saying: Mis'ar narrated to us, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Jaber ibn Samurah, similarly to the hadith of Abu Awanah.

The People of Kufa complained against Saʿd to ʿUmar and the latter dismissed him and appointed ʿAmmar as their chief . They lodged many complaints against Saʿd and even they alleged that he did not pray properly. ʿUmar sent for him and said, "O Aba 'Is-haq! These people claim that you do not pray properly." Abu 'Is-haq said, "By Allah, I used to pray with them a prayer similar to that of Allah's Apostle and I never reduced anything of it. I used to prolong the first two rakʿat of ʿIsha prayer and shorten the last two rakʿat." ʿUmar said, "O Aba 'Is-haq, this was what I thought about you." And then he sent one or more persons with him to Kufa so as to ask the people about him. So they went there and did not leave any mosque without asking about him. All the people praised him till they came to the mosque of the tribe of Bani ʿAbs; one of the men called Usama bin Qatada with a surname of Aba Saʿda stood up and said, "As you have put us under an oath; I am bound to tell you that Saʿd never went himself with the army and never distributed (the war booty) equally and never did justice in legal verdicts." (On hearing it) Saʿd said, "I pray to Allah for three things: O Allah! If this slave of yours is a liar and got up for showing off, give him a long life, increase his poverty and put him to trials." (And so it happened). Later on when that person was asked how he was, he used to reply that he was an old man in trial as the result of Saʿd's curse. ʿAbdul Malik, the sub narrator, said that he had seen him afterwards and his eyebrows were overhanging his eyes owing to old age and he used to tease and assault the small girls in the way.
