[Machine] I arrived in the city as an immigrant. When a man arrives in the city, if he has a host, he stays with him, and if he does not have a host, he stays in the Saffah. I arrived without a host, so I stayed in the Saffah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to walk between the two men and divide a handful of dates between them. While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in prayer, a man approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, our stomachs are burning from the dates, and our garments are torn." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised Allah and mentioned what he experienced from his people. Then he said, "I and my companion stayed for about ten nights without any food except for the ripened fruit of the Arak tree. Then our brothers from the Ansar came to us and provided us with their food. Most of their food was dates. And I swear by the one besides whom there is no god, if I had the ability to feed you bread and meat, I would have done so. And a time will come upon you, or those among you who will live long enough, when you will wear clothes like the curtains of the Kaaba, and you will be provided with food and provisions abundantly." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, will that be on that day or today?" He said, "No, on that day you are better. You are brothers today, and on that day you will strike each other's necks."

[Machine] The man from among us, when he arrived in the city, would have a guide who would take him to his accommodation. And if he did not have a guide in the city, he would stay in a spot designated for travelers. When I arrived, I stayed in the designated spot and the Prophet ﷺ used to pass by us every day, distributing a whole date to each person that passed between two of us. He would also provide us with blankets to cover ourselves. The Prophet ﷺ led some of the daytime prayers with us. After he finished, the people of the designated spot called out to him saying, "O Messenger of Allah, the dates are burning our stomachs and the blankets are wearing thin." The Prophet ﷺ went to his pulpit, praised Allah and spoke about the difficulties he and his companions faced until he said, "It has come to me and my companion (referring to Abu Bakr) only a few dates, and nothing to eat except barley bread." I asked my father, Abu Harb, what "al-Bareer" (mentioned by the Prophet) was, and he said, "It is the food of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the dates of the date palms." We then came to our brothers from the Ansar, and their food was mainly dates. They shared their dates with us, saying, "By Allah, if I had bread and meat, I would make you full with it. But perhaps you will have a time when you have only a handful to eat and feel full, and another time when you have something to rest upon." They asked the Prophet, "O Messenger of Allah, are we better today or were they (the Ansar) better that day?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Nay, rather you are better today. You are today a people who love one another, while they (the Ansar) were a people who were aloof from one another." Uraha said, "I think he said, 'who used to detest one another." This is the wording of the hadith narrated by Abu Sahl Al-Qattan and the wording of the hadith narrated by Yahya bin Yahya in abbreviated form.

[Machine] The man among us, when he arrived at the city, would stay at the Sufah (a designated area for the poor and homeless to rest). If he had a host in the city, he would stay at his host's place. If he did not have a host, he would stay at the Sufah.

I arrived at the city and did not have a host, so I stayed at the Sufah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would visit us every day, bringing with him a bunch of dates and we would be covered with a garment made of coarse wool. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in some of the daytime prayers, and when he finished, the people of the Sufah called him, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, our stomachs are burning because of the dates, and the coarse wool is causing us discomfort."

So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood at his pulpit and praised Allah and extolled Him. Then he mentioned the severity of what he encountered from his people, until he said, "I have been given a little, around ten measures of barley, and my companion (referring to Abu Bakr) has been given the same. I have nothing to eat except for the barley bread." I said to Abu Harb, "What is 'al-Burair'?" He said, "It is a bad kind of food, the fruit of camel-thorn."

"So we went to our brothers among the Ansar, and their main food was dates." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued, "By Allah, if I were to find bread and meat for you, I would have given you until you were full. But perhaps you may catch up with a time or a person who will feed you and give you rest with broken dishes, and you will wear clothes like the black silk covers of the Ka'bah."

Dawud said that Abu Harb said to me, "O Dawud, do you know what the covers of the Ka'bah were like at that time?" I said, "No." He said, "They were white clothes, brought from Yemen." [Sahih Bukhari]

[Machine] "When a man used to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he did not have anyone in Madinah to host him, he would stay with the Unnabar companions. I had partners in this arrangement. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit us every day between two date trees and he would assign two days of dates for us. While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in some of the prayers, he was called by one of his companions saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, the dates are causing pain in our stomachs and our bodies are becoming weak.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer, he stood up and praised Allah and extolled His virtues. Then he mentioned the hardship his people were going through. He said, 'So my companion and I had no food for a number of days except for barīr until we reached our brothers from the Ansar and they provided assistance and we were delighted with their food, which consisted mostly of dates. By the One besides Whom there is no true god, if I had found for you bread and meat, I would have fed you with that. And it is perhaps that you will reach a time or a place which those among you who reaches will be able to wear two cloaks of silk from the Ka'bah and you will be given bread and meat to eat and Myanmar on which to recline."
