[Machine] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If people were given what they claimed, then some men would claim the lives and wealth of others. However, the burden of proof is upon the plaintiff, and the oath is upon the defendant."  

البيهقي:٢١٢٠٠ – وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْأَدِيبُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ثنا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ قَالَ رُفِعَ إِلِيَّ امْرَأَةٌ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ صَاحِبَتَهَا وَجَأَتْهَا بِإِشْفَى حَتَّى ظَهَرَ مِنْ كَفِّهَا فَسَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَوْ يُعْطَى النَّاسُ بِدَعْوَاهُمْ لَادَّعَى رِجَالٌ دِمَاءَ رِجَالٍ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ وَلَكِنَّ الْبَيِّنَةَ عَلَى الطَّالِبِ وَالْيَمِينَ عَلَى الْمَطْلُوبِ

The oath must be taken by the defendant

that the Prophet ﷺ said, "If the people were given according to their claims, they would claim the lives of persons and their properties, but the oath must be taken by the defendant."

So, I wrote to Ibn Abbas and he wrote back that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If people were given what they claimed, men would claim the wealth and blood of others. But the burden of proof is upon the claimant, and the oath is upon the one who denies, and he mentioned the hadith."
