(who was an ally of Bam ʿAmr bin Lu'ai and one of those who had taken part in (the Ghazwa of) Badr): Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarreh to Bahrain to collect the Jizya. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had established peace with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-ʿAla' bin Al-Hadrami as their governor. When Abu 'Ubaida came from Bahrain with the money, the Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the time of the morning prayer with the Prophet. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in the morning prayer and finished, the Ansar approached him, and he looked at them and smiled on seeing them and said, "I feel that you have heard that Abu. 'Ubaida has brought something?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ' He said, "Rejoice and hope for what will please you! By Allah, I am not afraid of your poverty but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past nations did, whereupon you will compete with each other for it, as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلاَءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَوَافَتْ صَلاَةَ الصُّبْحِ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى بِهِمِ الْفَجْرَ انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ وَقَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ قَدْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدْ جَاءَ بِشَىْءٍ قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ لاَ الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنْ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُبْسَطَ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُهْلِكَكُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكَتْهُمْ

That ʿAmr bin ʿAuf, who was an ally of Bani 'Amir bin Luai and one of those who fought at Badr in the company of the Prophet ﷺ , said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring the Jizya taxation from its people, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ had made a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-ʿAla' bin Al-Hadrami as their ruler. So, Abu 'Ubaida arrived with the money from Bahrain. When the Ansar heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaida (on the next day) they offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and when the morning prayer had finished, they presented themselves before him. On seeing the Ansar, Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "I think you have heard that Abu 'Ubaida has brought something?" They replied, "Indeed, it is so, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Be happy, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will be poor, but I fear that worldly wealth will be bestowed upon you as it was bestowed upon those who lived before you. So you will compete amongst yourselves for it, as they competed for it and it will destroy you as it did them."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَهْوَ حَلِيفٌ لِبَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَىٍّ وَكَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمِ الْعَلاَءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَوَافَوْا صَلاَةَ الْفَجْرِ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ تَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدِمَ بِشَىْءٍ قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ تُبْسَطَ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُهْلِكَكُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكَتْهُمْ

(An ally of the tribe of Bani 'Amir bin Lu'ai and one of those who had witnessed the battle of Badr with Messenger of Allah ﷺ) Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin AlJarrah to Bahrain to collect the Jizya tax. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had concluded a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al 'Ala bin Al-Hadrami as their chief; Abu Ubaida arrived from Bahrain with the money. The Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the Fajr (morning) prayer led by Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer, they came to him. Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them and said, "I think you have heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaida and that he has brought something." They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! " He said, "Have the good news, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will become poor, but I am afraid that worldly wealth will be given to you in abundance as it was given to those (nations) before you, and you will start competing each other for it as the previous nations competed for it, and then it will divert you (from good) as it diverted them." '

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَهْوَ حَلِيفٌ لِبَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَىٍّ كَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلاَءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِهِ فَوَافَتْهُ صَلاَةَ الصُّبْحِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ تَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ حِينَ رَآهُمْ وَقَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ وَأَنَّهُ جَاءَ بِشَىْءٍ قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنْ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُبْسَطَ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُلْهِيَكُمْ كَمَا أَلْهَتْهُمْ

I think you have heard about the arrival of Abu ʿUbaida with goods from Bahrain. They said: Messenger of Allah, yes, it is so. Thereupon he said: Be happy and be hopeful of that which gives you delight. By Allah, it is not the poverty about which I fear in regard to you but I am afraid in your case that (the worldly) riches way be given to you as were given to those who had gone before you and you begin to vie with one another for them as they vied for them, and these may destroy you as these destroyed them.

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَىٍّ وَكَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلاَءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَوَافَوْا صَلاَةَ الْفَجْرِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدِمَ بِشَىْءٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَقَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُهْلِكَكُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكَتْهُمْ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dispatched Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah, so he arrived with the wealth from Al-Bahrain. When the Ansar had heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaidah they were attending Salat Al-Fajr. So the the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Salat and when he finished, they assembled before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them, then he said: 'I think that you heard that Abu 'Ubaidah has arrived with something?' They said: 'Yes O Messenger of Allah! 'He said: 'Then receive good news, and hope for what will please you. By Allah! It is not poverty that I fear for you, but what I fear for you is that the world will be presented for you just as it was presented for those before you,then you will compete for it, just as they competed for it, and it will destroy you, just as it destroyed them.'

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَىٍّ وَكَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ فَقَدِمَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَسَمِعَتِ الأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَوَافَوْا صَلاَةَ الْفَجْرِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدِمَ بِشَيْءٍ قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا فَتُهْلِكَكُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكَتْهُمْ

‘I think you have heard that Abu ‘Ubaidah has brought something from Bahrain?’ They said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Be of good cheer and hope for that which will make you happy. By Allah, I do not fear poverty for you, rather I fear that you will enjoy ease and plenty like those who came before you, and that you will compete with one another as they did, and you will be destroyed as they were.’”

‘I think you have heard that Abu ‘Ubaidah has brought something from Bahrain?’ They said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Be of good cheer and hope for that which will make you happy. [AI] He sat with 'Ubada ibn as-Samit, Abu ad-Darda, and al-Harith ibn Muawiya al-Kindi, and they discussed the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abu ad-Darda said to 'Ubada, "O 'Ubada, what are the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the spoils of war in such and such campaign?" 'Ubada said, "Isaac narrated in his hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with them during their expedition to a place called al-Muqassim. When he finished the prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a handful of ants and said, 'This is from your spoils, and I have no share in it except my share with you, except for the fifth share, which is to be returned to you. So give the thread and the needle and what is greater or smaller than that, and do not be greedy. For verily, greed is a fire and a disgrace upon its owners in this world and the Hereafter. Strive in the cause of Allah, near and far, and do not care about the blame of the blamers in the way of Allah. Establish the limits of Allah in both settlement and travel, and strive in the way of Allah. Verily, jihad is a great gate among the gates of Paradise, which Allah uses to save from sorrow and grief."

أَنَّهُ جَلَسَ مَعَ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ وَأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَالْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْكِنْدِيِّ فَتَذَاكَرُوا حَدِيثَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ لِعُبَادَةَ يَا عُبَادَةُ كَلِمَاتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ كَذَا فِي شَأْنِ الْأَخْمَاسِ؟ فَقَالَ عُبَادَةُ قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى بِهِمْ فِي غَزْوِهِمْ إِلَى بَعِيرٍ مِنَ الْمَقْسِمِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَنَاوَلَ وَبَرَةً بَيْنَ أُنْمُلَتَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذِهِ مِنْ غَنَائِمِكُمْ وَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي فِيهَا إِلَّا نَصِيبِي مَعَكُمْ إِلَّا الْخُمُسُ وَالْخُمُسُ مَرْدُودٌ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَدُّوا الْخَيْطَ وَالْمَخِيطَ وَأَكْبَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَصْغَرَ وَلَا تَغُلُّوا؛ فَإِنَّ الْغُلُولَ نَارٌ وَعَارٌ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَجَاهِدُوا النَّاسَ فِي اللهِ الْقَرِيبَ وَالْبَعِيدَ وَلَا تُبَالُوا فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ وَأَقِيمُوا حُدُودَ اللهِ فِي الْحَضَرِ وَالسَّفَرِ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؛ فَإِنَّ الْجِهَادَ بَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ عَظِيمٌ يُنَجِّي اللهُ بِهِ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْغَمِّ

Strive in the cause of Allah near and far, and do not care about the blame of the blamers for the sake of Allah. Establish the limits of Allah whether you are in settled or traveling situations, and strive in the way of Allah. Indeed, jihad is a door among the doors of Paradise, a great gate through which Allah saves one from worry and distress.'"

أَنَّهُ جَلَسَ مَعَ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ وَأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَالْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْكِنْدِيِّ فَتَذَاكَرُوا حَدِيثَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ لِعُبَادَةَ يَا عُبَادَةُ كَلِمَاتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ كَذَا فِي شَأْنِ الْأَخْمَاسِ؟ فَقَالَ عُبَادَةُ قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عِيسَى فِي حَدِيثِهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى بِهِمْ فِي غَزْوَتِهِ إِلَى بَعِيرٍ مِنَ الْمُقَسَّمِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَتَنَاوَلَ وَبَرَةً بَيْنَ أُنْمُلَتَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذِهِ مِنْ غَنَائِمِكُمْ وَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي فِيهَا إِلَّا نَصِيبِي مَعَكُمْ إِلَّا الْخُمُسُ وَالْخُمُسُ مَرْدُودٌ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَدُّوا الْخَيْطَ وَالْمَخِيطَ وَأَكْبَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَصْغَرَ لَا تَغُلُّوا؛ فَإِنَّ الْغُلُولَ نَارٌ وَعَارٌ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَجَاهِدُوا النَّاسَ فِي اللهِ الْقَرِيبَ وَالْبَعِيدَ وَلَا تُبَالُوا فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ وَأَقِيمُوا حُدُودَ اللهِ فِي الْحَضَرِ وَالسَّفَرِ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؛ فَإِنَّ الْجِهَادَ بَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ عَظِيمٌ يُنَجِّي اللهُ بِهِ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْغَمِّ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ would take provisions from the side of the camel's hump from the spoils of war and say, "I do not have anything from it except what any of you have. Beware of taking the Ghulool, for it will be a cause of disgrace for its owner on the Day of Resurrection. Fulfill the thread and the needle and beyond that, strive in the cause of Allah both near and far, in times of ease and difficulty. Verily, Jihad is a door among the doors of Paradise. It is a means by which Allah saves one from anxiety and sorrow. Establish the limits of Allah both near and far, and do not let the blame of the blamers discourage you in matters concerning Allah."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْخُذُ الْوَبَرَةَ مِنْ جَنْبِ الْبَعِيرِ مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ فَيَقُولُ مَا لِي فِيهِ إِلَّا مِثْلُ مَا لِأَحَدِكُمْ مِنْهُ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُولَ؛ فَإِنَّ الْغُلُولَ خِزْيٌ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَدُّوا الْخَيْطَ وَالْمَخِيطَ وَمَا فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِاللهِ الْقَرِيبَ وَالْبَعِيدَ فِي الْحَضَرِ وَالسَّفَرِ؛ فَإِنَّ الْجِهَادَ بَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ إِنَّهُ لَيُنَجِّي اللهُ بِهِ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْغَمِّ وَأَقِيمُوا حُدُودَ اللهِ فِي الْقَرِيبِ وَالْبَعِيدِ وَلَا تَأْخُذْكُمْ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةُ لَائِمٍ

[AI] From Abu Salamah al-Bahili, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , from Ubada bin As-Samit who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took on the day of Hunayn a share and a portion of the booty from a camel. Then he said, "O people, indeed it is not permissible for me to take from what Allah has bestowed upon you to the extent of this except the fifth, and the fifth is to be returned to you. So pay the thread and the needle, and beware of belittling even though it may be a rope. Indeed, it will be a burden on its people on the Day of Resurrection. And upon you is to strive in the cause of Allah, for it is a door among the doors of Paradise through which Allah removes distress and grief."

(An ally of the tribe of Bani 'Amir bin Lu'ai and one of those who had witnessed the battle of Badr with Messenger of Allah ﷺ) Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin AlJarrah to Bahrain to collect the Jizya tax. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had concluded a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al 'Ala bin Al-Hadrami as their chief; Abu Ubaida arrived from Bahrain with the money. The Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the Fajr (morning) prayer led by Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer, they came to him. Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them and said, "I think you have heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaida and that he has brought something." They replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! " He said, "Have the good news, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will become poor, but I am afraid that worldly wealth will be given to you in abundance as it was given to those (nations) before you, and you will start competing each other for it as the previous nations competed for it, and then it will divert you (from good) as it diverted them." أنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي عَامِرٍ وَكَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَأَتَى بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ الْبَحْرَيْنَ أَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِهِ فَوَافَتْ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ حِينَ رَآهُمْ وَقَالَ «أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ وَأَنَّهُ جَاءَ بِشَيْءٍ؟» قَالُوا أَجَلْ قَالَ «فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأْمَلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللهِ مَا الْفَقْرُ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنْ أَخْشَى أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَيُلْهِيكُمْ كَمَا أَلْهَتْهُمْ»

That ʿAmr bin ʿAuf, who was an ally of Bani 'Amir bin Luai and one of those who fought at Badr in the company of the Prophet ﷺ , said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring the Jizya taxation from its people, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ had made a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-ʿAla' bin Al-Hadrami as their ruler. So, Abu 'Ubaida arrived with the money from Bahrain. When the Ansar heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaida (on the next day) they offered the morning prayer with the Prophet ﷺ and when the morning prayer had finished, they presented themselves before him. On seeing the Ansar, Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "I think you have heard that Abu 'Ubaida has brought something?" They replied, "Indeed, it is so, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Be happy, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will be poor, but I fear that worldly wealth will be bestowed upon you as it was bestowed upon those who lived before you. (who was an ally of Bam ʿAmr bin Lu'ai and one of those who had taken part in (the Ghazwa of) Badr): Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarreh to Bahrain to collect the Jizya. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had established peace with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-ʿAla' bin Al-Hadrami as their governor. When Abu 'Ubaida came from Bahrain with the money, the Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the time of the morning prayer with the Prophet. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in the morning prayer and finished, the Ansar approached him, and he looked at them and smiled on seeing them and said, "I feel that you have heard that Abu. 'Ubaida has brought something?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ' He said, "Rejoice and hope for what will please you! By Allah, I am not afraid of your poverty but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past nations did, whereupon you will compete with each other for it, as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them." (who was an ally of Bam ʿAmr bin Lu'ai and one of those who had taken part in (the Ghazwa of) Badr): Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Jarreh to Bahrain to collect the Jizya. Messenger of Allah ﷺ had established peace with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al-ʿAla' bin Al-Hadrami as their governor. When Abu 'Ubaida came from Bahrain with the money, the Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the time of the morning prayer with the Prophet. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in the morning prayer and finished, the Ansar approached him, and he looked at them and smiled on seeing them and said, "I feel that you have heard that Abu. 'Ubaida has brought something?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ' He said, "Rejoice and hope for what will please you! By Allah, I am not afraid of your poverty but I am afraid that you will lead a life of luxury as past nations did, whereupon you will compete with each other for it, as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them." أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَكَانَ شَهِدَ بِدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعْتُ الْأَنْصَارَ بِقُدُومِهِ فَوَافَتْ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ فَقَالَ «أَظُنُّكُمْ قَدْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدْ جَاءَ وَجَاءَ بِشَيْءٍ؟» قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللهِ مَا الْفَقْرَ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنِّي أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُلْهِيَكُمْ كَمَا أَلْهَتْهُمْ»

[AI] He informed him that Amr ibn Auf, who was an ally of the Banu Amr ibn Luay, had witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He also informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah to Bahrain to collect its tribute, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ considered the people of Bahrain to be righteous and appointed Alaa ibn al-Hadrami as their leader. Abu Ubaydah arrived with wealth from Bahrain, and when the Ansar heard of his arrival, they went to perform the Fajr prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When they finished, they confronted him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled upon seeing them and said, "I assume you have heard of the arrival of Abu Ubaydah and that he has brought something?" They replied, "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Rejoice and hope for what brings you happiness, for by Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out before those before you, and you will compete for it and it will distract you as it distracted them."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ ؓ وَهُوَ حَلِيفُ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ لُؤَيٍّ كَانَ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ ؓ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَأْتِي بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِهِ فَوَافَتْ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ تَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ وَقَالَ أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ وَأَنَّهُ جَاءَ بِشَيْءٍ؟ فَقَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ أَبْشِرُوا وَأَمِّلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللهِ مَا الْفَقْرُ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنْ أَخْشَى أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُلْهِيَكُمْ كَمَا أَلْهَتْهُمْ

"إِنَّ هذه غنائِمكم، وإِنَّه لَيْسَ يَحِلُّ لِى فيها إِلَّا نصيبى معكم، إِلا الْخُمُسُ، والْخُمُسُ، مردودٌ عليَكَم، فَأَدُّوا الخيْطَ والْمِخْيَطَ، وَأَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذلِكَ وأَصْغَر، ولا تَغُلُّوا، فإِن الغُلولَ نَارٌ وعَارٌ عَلَى أَصحابه في الدنيا والآخرِة، وجاهِدُوا النَّاسَ في اللَّه تعالِى، القريبَ والبعيدَ، ولا تُبَالُوا في اللَّه لومَةَ لائِمِ، وأَقيموا حُدُودَ اللَّه تعالى في الْحَضَر والسَّفَر، وجاهِدُوا في سبيل اللَّه تعالى فإنَّ الجهادَ بابٌ من أَبْواب الجنَّةِ عظيمٌ، وإِنَّه يُنَجِّى اللَّه به من الهمِّ والْغَمِّ".

"أَلَا إِنَّ هذَا مِنْ غَنَائِمكُمْ ولَيْسَ لِى مِنْهُ إِلَّا الخُمُسُ، والخُمُس مردُود عَليكُمْ فَأدُّوا الخيطَ والمَخيط، وَأَصْغَر مِنْ ذلِكَ وَأَكْبَر، فَإِنَّ الغُلُول عَارٌ عَلَى أَهْلهِ فِى الدُّنْيَا والآخِرَةِ جَاهدوا النَّاسَ فِى اللَّه القريبَ والبَعيدَ، وَلَا تُبالوُا فِى اللَّه لَوْمَة لائم، وَأقَيمُوا حُدُودَ اللَّهِ في الحَضَرِ والسَّفرِ، وَعَليَكُمْ بالجهَادِ فإِنَّه بَابٌ مِنْ أبوَابِ الجَنَّة عَظِيمٌ، يُنَجِّى اللَّه به مِن الغمَّ والهَمِّ ".

"عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْن الصَّامِت أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ صَلَّى إِلَى بَعَيرٍ مِنَ الغُنْمِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ منْ صَلاَته أَخَذَ قَرَدَةً بَيْنَ أُصْبُعَيْهِ وَهِىَ وَبَرَة، فَقالَ: ألَا إِنَّ هَذَا مِنْ غَنَائِمِكُمْ وَلَيْسَ لِى منْهُ إِلَّا الخُمُسُ، الخُمُسُ مَرْدُودٌ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَأَدُّوا الخَيْطَ وَالمِخيطَ، وَأَصْغَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَأكْبَرَ، وَلاَ تَغُلُّوا؛ فَإِنَّ الغُلُولَ عَارٌ عَلَى أهْلِهِ فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالآخرَةِ، جَاهدُوا النَّاسَ فِى الله القَرِيبَ وَالبَعيدَ، وَلاَ تُمَالِئُوا في الله لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ، وَأَقِيمُوا حُدُودَ الله فِى الحَضَرِ وَالسَّفَرِ، وعَلَيْكُمْ بالجِهَادِ فِى سَبيلِ الله فَإِنَّهُ بَابٌ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الجَنَّةِ عَظِيمٌ، يُنَجِّى الله بِهِ مِنَ الغَمِّ وَالهَمِّ".
