Messenger of Allah ﷺ was lying in the bed in my apartment with his thigh uncovered and Abu Bakr sought permission to enter. It was given to him and he conversed in the same very state (the Prophet's thigh or shank uncovered). Then ʿUmar sought permission for entering and it was given to him and he conversed in that very state. Then ʿUthman sought permission to enter; Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and he set right his clothes. Muhammad (one of the narrators) said: I do not say that it happened on the same day. He (ʿUthman) then entered and conversed and as he went out, ʿAisha said: Abu Bakr entered and you did not stir and did not observe much care (in arranging your clothes), then ʿUmar entered and you did not stir and did not arrange your clothes, then ʿUthman entered and you got up and set your clothes right, so he ﷺ said: Should I not show modesty to one whom even the Angels show modesty.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُضْطَجِعًا فِي بَيْتِي كَاشِفًا عَنْ فَخِذَيْهِ أَوْ سَاقَيْهِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ فَتَحَدَّثَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَذَلِكَ فَتَحَدَّثَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَسَوَّى ثِيَابَهُ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَلاَ أَقُولُ ذَلِكَ فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ فَدَخَلَ فَتَحَدَّثَ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ تَهْتَشَّ لَهُ وَلَمْ تُبَالِهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُمَرُ فَلَمْ تَهْتَشَّ لَهُ وَلَمْ تُبَالِهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ فَجَلَسْتَ وَسَوَّيْتَ ثِيَابَكَ فَقَالَ أَلاَ أَسْتَحِي مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَسْتَحِي مِنْهُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his thigh uncovered when Abu Bakr sought permission to enter, and the Prophet granted him permission while in that state. Then Umar sought permission, and the Prophet granted him permission while in the same state. Then Uthman sought permission, and the Prophet covered himself with his clothes. When they left, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr and Umar sought permission to enter upon you, and you granted them permission while in that state, but when Uthman sought permission, you covered yourself with your clothes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Aisha, should I not be shy of a man when, by Allah, even the angels are shy of him."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ جَالِسًا كَاشِفًا عَنْ فَخِذِهِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى حَالِهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى حَالِهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَأَرْخَى عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابَهُ فَلَمَّا قَامُوا قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْكَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ فَأَذِنْتَ لَهُمَا وَأَنْتَ عَلَى حَالِكَ فَلَمَّا اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ أَرْخَيْتَ عَلَيْكَ ثِيَابَكَ فَقَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ رَجُلٍ وَاللهِ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْتَحِي مِنْهُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me one day and placed his garment between his thighs. Abu Bakr sought permission to enter, so the Prophet gave him permission while he was in that state. Then Umar sought permission to enter, so the Prophet gave him permission while he was in that state. Then some of his companions sought permission to enter, so he gave them permission. Then Ali sought permission to enter, so he gave him permission while he was in that state. Then Uthman ibn Affan sought permission to enter, so he straightened his garment and then gave him permission. They spoke for a while and then they left. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and some of your companions entered upon you and you did not move. But when Uthman entered, you straightened your garment." He said, "Should I not feel ashamed before the one whom the angels feel ashamed?"

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَوَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُوَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ وَجَاءَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمْ وَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَتَجَلَّلَ ثَوْبَهُ ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لَهُ فَتَحَدَّثُوا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دَخَلَ عَلَيْكَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعَلِيٌّ وَنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْئَتِكَ لَمْ تَحَرَّكْ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ تَجَلَّلْتَ ثَوْبَكَ فَقَالَ أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِمَّنْ تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in a house that had nothing on it except a single garment, which he spread between his legs and thighs. Abu Bakr sought permission to enter and he granted it to him, so he entered. Then ‘Umar sought permission to enter and he granted it to him, so he entered. Then ‘Uthman sought permission to enter and he granted it to him, so when the Prophet saw him he hastened to stand up, so it upset ‘A’ishah. When the people had gone out, she said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr and ‘Umar entered, so you did not change your position, but when ‘Uthman entered you stood up quickly." He said: "O ‘A’ishah, should I not feel shy before one before whom the angels feel shy?"

جَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَيْتٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا إِزَارٌ فَطَرَحَهُ بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ وَفَخِذَاهُ خارجتانِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَيْهِ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَامَ مُسْرِعًا حَتَّى دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ فَشَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ الْقَوْمُ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ فَلَمْ تُغَيِّرْ عَنْ حَالِكَ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ قُمْتَ فَقَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ أَلَا أَسْتَحِي مِمَّنْ تَسْتَحْي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْتَحْي مِنْ عُثْمَانَ»

[AI] I heard Abdullah bin Umar saying, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting and Aisha was behind him, Abu Bakr sought permission and entered, then Umar sought permission and entered, then Saad bin Malik sought permission and entered, then Uthman bin Affan sought permission and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was talking, unveiling his knee, so he put his garment on his knee when Uthman sought permission. He said to his wife, "Delay them and let them talk for a while," then they went out. Aisha said, "O Prophet of Allah, my father and his companions entered and you did not fix your garment from your knee and you did not delay me from you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Aisha, should I feel shy in front of a man whom the angels feel shy of? By Him in whose hand the soul of the Messenger of Allah lies, the angels feel shy of Uthman just as they feel shy of Allah and His Messenger. If he had entered while you were close to me, he would not have spoken and would not have raised his head until you went out."

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَالِسٌ وَعَائِشَةُ وَرَاءَهُ إِذِ اسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ سَعْدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَدَخَلَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَحَدَّثُ كَاشِفًا عَنْ رُكْبَتِهِ فَمَدَّ ثَوْبَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ حِينَ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ وَقَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ اسْتَأْخِرِي فَتَحَدَّثُوا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ دَخَلَ أَبِي وَأَصْحَابُهُ فَلَمْ تُصْلِحْ ثَوْبَكَ عَنْ رُكْبَتِكَ وَلَمْ تُؤَخِّرْنِي عَنْكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يَا عَائِشَةُ أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَتَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ عُثْمَانَ كَمَا تَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَلَوْ دَخَلَ وَأَنْتِ قَرِيبٌ مِنِّي لَمْ يَتَحَدَّثْ وَلَمْ يَرْفَعْ رَأْسَهُ حَتَّى تخْرُجَ»

But when Uthman entered, you became modest in your garment." He said, "Should I not feel bashfulness from the one whom the angels feel bashfulness from?"

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَوَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْأَتِهِ فَجَاءَ أُنَاسٌ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمْ فَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْأَتِهِ حَتَّى جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَتَجَلَّلَ بِثَوْبِهِ ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لَهُ فَتَحَدَّثُوا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ دَخَلَ عَلَيْكَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعَلِيٌّ وَنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ وَأَنْتَ فِي هَيْأَتِكَ لَيْسَ تُحَرِّكُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ تَجَلَّلْتَ بِثَوْبِكَ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِِي مِمَّنْ تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَة؟ ُ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was placing his garment between his thighs when Abu Bakr sought permission from him, and he granted him permission while in that state. Then Umar sought permission, and he granted him permission while in that state. Then Ali sought permission among some of the Prophet's companions, and he granted him permission while in that state. Then they left, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr sought permission and you granted him permission while you were in that state. Then Umar sought permission, and you granted him permission while you were in that state. Then Ali sought permission among some of your companions, and you granted him permission while you were in that state. Then Uthman sought permission and you clothed yourself with your garment." He said, "Should I not be shy about something from which the angels are shy?" Ibn Juraij said, "And my father informed me with a similar narration."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَاضِعًا ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلِيٌّ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَهَيْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَجَلَّلَ بِثَوْبِهِ ثُمَّ تَحَدَّثُوا ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَذِنْتُ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ فَأَذِنْتَ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلِيٌّ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ فَأَذِنْتُ لَهُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْأَتِكَ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَجَلَّلْتَ بِثَوْبِكَ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِمَّا تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ؟» قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي بِنَحْوِهِ

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was lying down in his home, with his thighs or legs exposed. Abu Bakr sought permission to enter, and he was granted permission while the Prophet remained in that position. They spoke, then Umar sought permission and he was granted permission while the Prophet remained in the same position. They spoke again, then Uthman sought permission and the Prophet sat up and fixed his clothing. Muhammad said, "I do not speak of this in a single day." After Uthman left, Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr entered and you did not pay attention to him nor did you mind it. Then Umar entered and you did not pay attention to him nor did you mind it. Then Uthman entered and you sat up and fixed your clothing. Shouldn't you feel shy before a man that the angels feel shy before?" I am paraphrasing the narration of Qutaybah.

I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and all your companions came to you while you were in your state, but when Uthman came, you covered yourself with your garment." She (the narrator) said, "So the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Should I not be modest from someone before whom the angels are modest?'" The shaikh said, "And likewise."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ جَالِسًا وَقَدْ وَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ ثُمَّ عُمَرُ بِمِثْلِ هَذِهِ الْقِصَّةِ ثُمَّ عَلِيٌّ ثُمَّ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ يَسْتَأْذِنُ فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثَوْبَهُ فَتَجَلَّلَهُ قَالَتْ فَتَحَدَّثُوا ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ جَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَعَلِيٌّ وَسَائِرُ أَصْحَابِكَ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْئَتِكَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ تَجَلَّلْتَ بِثَوْبِكَ قَالَتْ فَقَالَ أَلَا أَسْتَحْيِي مِمَّنْ تَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَكَذَلِكَ

"عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: بَيْنَا رَسُولُ الله ﷺ جَالِسٌ وَعَائِشَةُ وَرَاءَهُ إِذ اسْتَأذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَدَخَلَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأذَنَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَدَخَلَ وَرَسُولُ الله ﷺ يَتَحَدَّثُ

كَاشِفًا عَنْ رُكْبَتَيْهِ، فَمَدَّ ثَوْبَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَقَالَ لاِمْرَأَتِهِ: اسْتَأخِرِى عَنِّى، فَتَحَدَّثُوا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَقُلتُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله: دَخَلَ عَلَيْكَ أَصْحَابُكَ فَلَمْ تُصْلِحْ ثَوْبَكَ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْكَ، وَلَمْ تُؤَخِّرْنِى عَنْكَ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ، فَقَالَ: يَا عَائِشَةُ أَلاَ أَسْتَحْي مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَسْتَحِى مِنْهُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ؟ وَالَّذِى نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بيَدِهِ إِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ لَتَسْتَحِى مِنْ عُثْمَانَ كَمَا تَسْتَحِى مِنَ الله وَرَسُولِهِ، وَلَوْ دَخَلَ وَأَنْتِ قَرِيبَةٌ مِنِّى لَمْ يَرْفَعْ رَأسَهُ وَلَمْ يَتَحَدَّثْ وَخَرَجَ".

"عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدِي ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ جَالِسًا قَدْ وَضَعَ ثَوْبَهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَاسْتَأذَنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ، ثُمَّ عُمَرُ بمِثْلِ هَذهِ القِصَّةِ، ثُمَّ عَلِيٌّ، ثُمَّ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى هَيْئَتِهِ، ثُمَ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَاسْتَأذَنَ، فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثَوْبَهُ [فَتَجَلَّلَهُ]، ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لَهُ فَتَحَدَّثُوا، ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ: جَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ، وَعَلِيٌّ، وَسَائِرُ أَصْحَابِكَ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى هَيْئَتِكَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَجَلَّلَتَ بِثَوبِكَ: فَقَالَ: أَلَا أسْتَحْيى مِمَّنْ تَسْتَحْيى مِنْهُ المَلاَئِكَةُ؟ ! ".

"عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُضْطَجِعًا فِي بَيْتِهِ كَاشِفًا

عَنْ فَخِذَيْهِ، أَوْ سَاقَيْهِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى تِلْكَ الحَالِ فَتَحَدَّثَ، ثُمَ اسْتَأذَنَ عُمَرُ، فَأَذِنَ لَهُ وَهُوَ كَذَلِكَ فَتَحَدَّثَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأذَنَ عُثْمَانُ فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَوَّى ثِيَابَهُ، فَدَخَلَ فَتَحَدَّثَ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ تَجْلِسْ وَلَمْ تباله ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُمَرُ فَلَمْ تَهشَّ وَلَمْ تُبَالِهِ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ فَجَلَسْتَ وَسَوَّيْتَ ثِيَابَكَ؟ فَقَالَ: أَلَا أَسْتَحْيى مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَسْتَحْيى مِنْهُ المَلَائِكَةُ".
