[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once placed his garment between his thighs, then Abu Bakr came and sought permission to enter, and he granted him permission while in that state. Then Umar came and the same thing happened, then Ali, then some of his companions, and the Prophet ﷺ was in the same state. Then Uthman came and sought permission to enter, and he granted him permission. Uthman took his garment and covered himself with it, and they had a conversation. Then they all left. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and the rest of your companions came to you while you were in your state, but when Uthman came, you covered yourself with your garment. Shouldn't you have felt shy in front of him, as the angels feel shy in front of him?"

Messenger of Allah ﷺ was lying in the bed in my apartment with his thigh uncovered and Abu Bakr sought permission to enter. It was given to him and he conversed in the same very state (the Prophet's thigh or shank uncovered). Then ʿUmar sought permission for entering and it was given to him and he conversed in that very state. Then ʿUthman sought permission to enter; Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and he set right his clothes. Muhammad (one of the narrators) said: I do not say that it happened on the same day. He (ʿUthman) then entered and conversed and as he went out, ʿAisha said: Abu Bakr entered and you did not stir and did not observe much care (in arranging your clothes), then ʿUmar entered and you did not stir and did not arrange your clothes, then ʿUthman entered and you got up and set your clothes right, so he ﷺ said: Should I not show modesty to one whom even the Angels show modesty.

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was lying down in his home, with his thighs or legs exposed. Abu Bakr sought permission to enter, and he was granted permission while the Prophet remained in that position. They spoke, then Umar sought permission and he was granted permission while the Prophet remained in the same position. They spoke again, then Uthman sought permission and the Prophet sat up and fixed his clothing. Muhammad said, "I do not speak of this in a single day." After Uthman left, Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr entered and you did not pay attention to him nor did you mind it. Then Umar entered and you did not pay attention to him nor did you mind it. Then Uthman entered and you sat up and fixed your clothing. Shouldn't you feel shy before a man that the angels feel shy before?" I am paraphrasing the narration of Qutaybah.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ was sitting one day with his thighs uncovered and Abu Bakr came and sought permission, so he granted it to him. Then Umar came with a similar situation, then Ali, then some of his companions, and the Prophet ﷺ granted them permission while in that state. Then Uthman came and sought permission, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his garment and covered himself with it. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and all your companions came to you while you were in your state, but when Uthman came, you covered yourself with your garment." She (the narrator) said, "So the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Should I not be modest from someone before whom the angels are modest?'" The shaikh said, "And likewise."
