This verse was revealed when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was preaching secretly in Makkah: ʿ And offer your Salah neither aloud nor in a low voiceʿ [Al Isra' 17:110]. He said: When he led the companions in prayer, he raised his voice reciting the Qur'an, and when the mushrikeen heard that, they reviled the Qur'an, the one who revealed it and the one to whom it was sent. Then Allah said to his Prophet: ʿ And offer your Salah (prayer) neither aloudʿ i.e, when reciting, lest the mushrikeen hear and revile the Qur'an,ʿnor in a low voiceʿ that your companions cannot hear the Qur'an, so that they can learn it from you; ʿbut follow a way betweenʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 155)

(regarding): 'Neither say your, prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110) This Verse was revealed while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hiding himself in Mecca. When he prayed with his companions, he used to raise his voice with the recitation of Qur'an, and if the pagans happened to hear him, they would abuse the Qur'an, the One who revealed it and the one who brought it. Therefore Allah said to His Prophet : 'Neither say your prayer aloud.' (17.110) i.e. do not recite aloud lest the pagans should hear you, but follow a way between.

(Using translation from Bukhārī 4722)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to secretly recite the Quran in Mecca. Whenever he raised his voice, the pagans would curse the Quran and those who revealed it and brought it. Allah, the Almighty, said, "And do not raise your voice in prayer." [Surah Al-Isra, 17:110] until the pagans hear it. "Nor be silent in it." [Surah Al-Isra, 17:110] from fear of your companions, so as not to let them hear it. "And seek a way between them." [Surah Al-Isra, 17:110] Hear them without raising your voice until they turn away from you and the Quran.

[Machine] This verse was revealed while the Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca, hiding. When he would pray, he would raise his voice, and the polytheists would insult the Quran and those who revealed it. Allah ﷻ then said to his Prophet ﷺ, "And do not speak aloud in your prayer or become silent therein." [Surah Al-Isra' 110] Make your companions listen and seek a way between that. [Surah Al-Isra' 110] Make them listen to the Quran until they leave you alone.
