[Machine] Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari narrated about the dedication of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in worship. He said, "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) said, 'My father and I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition from Najd. A woman from the polytheists shot an arrow towards us, and we entered one of the houses of the polytheists. The arrow hit a woman from among them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and her husband came, but he was absent when it happened. When her situation was mentioned to him, he swore not to return until he spilled the blood of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached a certain place, he camped in a valley and asked, 'Who are the two men who will spend the night with us from our enemies?' A man among the emigrants and a man from the Ansar said, 'We will bear you, O Messenger of Allah.' They went out to the mouth of the valley, away from the army. The Ansari said to the emigrant, 'Will you take the first part of the night or should I take it? Or should I take the last part and you take it first?' The emigrant said, 'No, you take the first part and I will take the last.' So, the emigrant slept and the Ansari prayed. He started reciting a chapter of the Quran, and while he was reciting, the wife's husband came and recognized him as a man from the enemy. He tried to kill him with an arrow, but the Ansari continued reciting without moving, out of dislike for interrupting the recitation. Then the wife's husband came to him again with another arrow, but the Ansari continued reciting without moving, out of dislike for interrupting the recitation. Then the wife's husband came to him for the third time with an arrow, but the Ansari continued reciting without moving. Then, he bowed and prostrated, and said to his companion, 'Sit down, I have been granted.' The emigrant sat down, and when the wife's husband saw both of them, he ran away knowing that he had been threatened. The Ansari was bleeding with the arrows shot by the wife's husband. The emigrant said to him, 'May Allah forgive you. Didn't you hear me when he shot the arrow at you for the first time?' The Ansari replied, 'I was reciting a chapter of the Quran that I had started reciting, and I disliked cutting it off. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not commanded me to keep it safe, I would have ended my life before ending the recitation.'"

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle of Dhāt al-Riqā‘. A woman from the polytheists was injured, so when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed with the caravan, her husband came and he was absent. He swore that he would not cease until he shed blood among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ . He went out following the traces of the Prophet ﷺ , and the Prophet ﷺ settled in a house. He asked, "Who is guarding us tonight?" A man from the Muhājirīn and a man from the Anṣār responded saying, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the valley." They descended to the valley and when the two men reached the mouth of the valley, the Ansārī said to the Muhājirī, "Which part of the night do you prefer that I relieve you?" The beginning or the end? He replied, "Relieve me at the beginning." So the Muhājirī laid down to sleep, and the Ansārī stood to pray. Then the man came, and when he saw the Muhājirī, he knew that he was their guard, so he shot an arrow at him. The Muhājirī put the arrow back into him, and remained standing strong. Then the man shot another arrow, and the Muhājirī pushed it back into him and remained standing strong. He returned to him with a third arrow, and the Muhājirī put it back into him and remained standing strong. Then he performed the rukū‘ (bowing) and sujūd (prostration), and beckoned for his companion. He said, "Sit down, for you have been given (the opportunity)." He jumped up, and when the man saw the two of them, he knew that they had vowed to fight him, so he ran away. The Muhājirī looked at the blood on the Ansārī and said, "Glory be to Allah! Didn't you wake me up?" He replied, "I was reciting a verse in the Qur'an and I did not want to cut it off until I completed it." When the shooting began, I performed the rukū‘, and I saw you. I swear by Allah, if it were not for my duty to protect you commanded by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , my life would have been lost before I cut off their hands or destroyed them.

[Machine] We went with the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'a from a place full of palm trees. One of the Muslims happened to approach a woman from the polytheists and took her, then when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم left with the caravan, he went to her husband who was absent. When he was informed of the news, he swore not to stop shedding the blood of the companions of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم until it settled in his heart. He then went to follow the traces of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم stopped at a place and said, "Who will guard us tonight?" A man from the Emigrants and a man from the Helpers came forward and said, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the valley." The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions had settled at the valley. When the two men reached the mouth of the valley, the Helper asked the Emigrant, "Which part of the night do you prefer for me to guard?" He said, "I prefer you to guard the first part." So the Emigrant rested, and the Helper started to pray. Then the husband of the woman came, and when he saw a person, he recognized him as the lord of his people, so he shot an arrow at him. The Helper withdrew the arrow and put it in himself, and he remained standing in prayer. Then the husband tried to shoot the Helper with another arrow, but the Helper withdrew it and put it in himself, and he remained standing in prayer. Then he tried for the third time, but this time the Helper allowed it to hit him, then he performed a prostration and alerted his companion, saying, "Sit down, I have established myself." He then jumped up, and when the man saw them, he realized that he had made a vow regarding them, so he ran away. When the Emigrant saw the blood on the Helper from the injuries inflicted by the arrows, he said, "Glory be to Allah! Why didn't you call me when he first shot you?" The Helper replied, "I was in the middle of reciting a surah and I did not want to interrupt it until I completed it. When he continued to shoot me, I performed a prostration and warned you. By Allah, if it were not for the order of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم to protect him, my life would have been cut off before I finished reciting the surah or performed the prostration."

[Machine] "We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle of Dhat ar-Riqa', and a Muslim man had relations with the wife of a polytheist. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the campaign and left, the husband came and confronted his wife, who had been absent. When he was informed of what had happened, he swore not to stop shedding the blood of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ until he avenged the act. He went out to pursue the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ settled in a spot and said, 'Who will cover our night?'. A man from the Muhajireen and a man from the Ansar volunteered and said, 'We will, O Messenger of Allah'. He ﷺ said, 'Then remain at the mouth of the valley'. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions descended into a valley. When the two men reached the mouth of the valley, the Ansari said to the Muhajir, 'Which part of the night do you prefer that I cover for you, the first or the last?'. The Muhajir answered, 'Let me take the first part'. So the Muhajir lay down and slept while the Ansari stood and prayed. Then the husband of the woman approached, and when he saw someone, he recognized him as one of the leaders of the group. He shot an arrow at him, which hit him, so the man placed it in him, the husband of the woman pulled the arrow out, placed it again, and stayed standing in prayer. The Ansari continued this for a second time, and a third time. Then he performed the Rukoo' and the Sujood, and motioned to his companion saying, 'Get up, for I have been hit'. So his companion rose and fled. When the man saw the blood on the Ansari, he said, 'SubhanAllah! Did you not come to assist me when you were first shot at?'. The Ansari replied, 'I was reciting a Surah which I did not want to interrupt until I completed it. When you continued to shoot, I performed another Rukoo' prayer, and when you continued to shoot, I completed the Surah in prayer. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not ordered me to stand guard, I would have preferred death over leaving it incomplete'."

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Thaat ar-Riqa' from a date grove. A Muslim man accidentally struck the wife of a man from the polytheists. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his army's preparations and left, he went to her husband who was absent. When he heard the news, he swore not to stop until he shed the blood of the companions of Muhammad. He went out to follow the trace of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who stopped in a place and said, "Who will protect us tonight?" One man from the Muhajireen and another from the Ansar responded, saying, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He instructed them to stay near the mouth of the valley. When they reached the mouth of the valley, the Ansari asked the Muhajir, "Which part of the night do you prefer for me to protect you, the beginning or the end?" The Muhajir replied, "No, you should protect me first." So the Muhajir laid down to sleep, while the Ansari began praying. The husband of the woman came, and when he saw the man, he recognized him as the leader of his people, so he shot an arrow at him, which hit him. He pulled it out and put it back, remaining standing to continue his prayer. Then the man shot another arrow at him, which hit him. He pulled it out and put it back, remaining standing to continue his prayer. Then the man shot a third arrow at him, which hit him. He pulled it out and put it back, and then he bowed and prostrated. His companion said to him, "Sit down, you have been affirmed." He leaped up, and when the man saw him, he realized that they had made a solemn vow concerning him, so he fled. When the Muhajir saw the Ansari covered in blood, he said, "Glory be to Allah! Why didn't you wake me up when he shot at you the first time?" The Ansari replied, "I was reciting a surah that I did not want to cut off until I completed it. When he shot at me the second time, I bowed. I was following the orders of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be cautious, otherwise I would have killed myself before he killed me or completed his task."
