He said, 'Indeed, we were not created for this. We were only created for plowing.' The people said, 'Glory be to Allah! A cow that speaks!' He said, 'Indeed, I believe in this, as do Abu Bakr and Umar, and neither of them.' Then he mentioned a man with his sheep who was attacked by a wolf and it took one of the sheep. He ran after it and caught it and saved it from the wolf. He said, 'O you! You saved it from me. So, who will have it on the Day of Judgement when there will be no shepherd for it except me?' He would say: 'If you kill, kill someone who has blood (i.e., deserves to be killed), and if you show kindness, show kindness to one who shows gratitude, and if you take (something), then give (something in return).'" He said: "Then, when he passed by them, they would say the same thing to him, and he would give the same answer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ released him, and Allah instilled in his heart: 'O Muhammad, you became dearer to me than anything else, even though your face used to be the most hateful of all faces, and your religion used to be the most hateful of all religions to me, and your city (Makkah) used to be the most hateful of all cities to me. But now you have become the most beloved of all people and faces to me. No grain of barley comes to the people of Quraish until I no longer think of it, but for Thumamah bin Uthal.' 'Umar said: 'By Allah, I have never seen anyone who was dearer to me and at the same time less in my eyes than a pig, and I have never seen anyone who was dearer to me and at the same time greater in my eyes than a mountain.' Then he left and went to Yamamah. They detained him, and they were angry and upset. They wrote: 'Shall we decide what to do with him?' He (Thumamah) said: 'No decision should be made about me, until I have been to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abdullah bin Ahmad said: "I heard him (Sufyan) say: 'I heard Ibn 'Ajlan narrating from Sa'id, from Abu Hurayrah, that Thumamah bin Uthal said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .'"
