I prepare it as a medicine, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: It is no medicine, but an ailment.

أَنَّ طَارِقَ بْنَ سُوَيْدٍ الْجُعْفِيَّ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَنَهَا أَوْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَصْنَعَهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا أَصْنَعُهَا لِلدَّوَاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِدَوَاءٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ دَاءٌ

[AI] Suwaibid bin Tarik asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about alcohol, and he prohibited him from making it. He said, "Indeed, it is a medicine." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Verily, it is not a medicine, but it is a disease."

أَنَّ سُوَيْدَ بْنَ طَارِقٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَنَهَاهُ عَنْهَا أَنْ يَصْنَعَهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّهَا دَوَاءٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ دَوَاءً وَلَكِنَّهَا دَاءٌ»

[AI] that he witnessed the Prophet ﷺ, and a man from Khatham called Suwaid ibn Tariq asked him. Ibn Jafar said: or Tariq ibn Suwaid al-Jufi asked the Prophet ﷺ about wine, so he forbade him; then he mentioned the hadith.

إِنَّهُ شَهِدَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَثْعَمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ: أَوْ طَارِقُ بْنُ سُوَيْدٍ الْجُعْفِيُّ، سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ، فَنَهَاهُ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ.

[AI] A man called Suwaid ibn Tariq asked the Prophet ﷺ about wine, and he forbade it. He said, "I make it for medicine," so the Prophet ﷺ said: "It is a disease and not a cure."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ، فَنَهَاهُ عَنْهَا. فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَصْنَعُهَا لِلدَّوَاءِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «إِنَّهَا دَاءٌ وَلَيْسَتْ بِدَوَاءٍ»

I prepare it as a medicine, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: It is no medicine, but an ailment. (Using translation from Muslim 1984)

[AI] "He (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) witnessed and a man from Khath'am called Sued ibn Tariq asked him about alcoholic drinks. So he forbade him and said, 'It is something that we manufacture as medicine.' But the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Indeed, it is a disease.'"

أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَثْعَمَ يُقَالُ لَهُ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَنَهَاهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هُوَ شَيْءٌ نَصْنَعُهُ دَوَاءً فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِنَّمَا هِيَ دَاءٌ

[AI] Swaid ibn Tariq asked the Prophet ﷺ about alcohol and said, "We make it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade him from doing so. Swaid ibn Tariq then said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is a medicine." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is not a medicine, rather it is a disease."

أَنَّ سُوَيْدَ بْنَ طَارِقٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَقَالَ إِنَّا نَصْنَعُهَا فَنَهَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا دَوَاءٌ فَقَالَ ﷺ «إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِدَوَاءٍ وَلَكِنَّهَا دَاءٌ»

[AI] Abu said that they came to the Prophet ﷺ , and a man from the tribe of Khath'am named Suwayd ibn Tariq approached him. He said, "We make alcohol, and he (the Prophet) prohibited it." The man said, "We only use it for medical purposes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not a cure, indeed it is a disease."

عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُمْ أَتَوَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ خَثْعَمَ يُقَالُ لَهُ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّا نَصْنَعُ الْخَمْرَ فَنَهَاهُ عَنْهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا نَتَدَاوَى بِهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَيْسَتْ بِدَوَاءٍ إِنَّهَا دَاءٌ»

"عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ حجْرٍ أنَّ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ سَألَ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ عَنْ الَخْمرِ فَنَهاهُ فَقَالَ: أصْنَعُهَا لِلدَّوَاءِ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبىُّ ﷺ إِنَّهَا دَاءٌ وَلَيْسَتْ بِدَوَاءٍ".
