The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) used to touch our shoulders in prayer and say: Keep straight, don't be irregular, for there would be dissension in your hearts. Let those of you who are sedate and prudent be near me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them. Abu Mas'ud said: Now-a-days there is much dissension amongst you.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَيَقُولُ اسْتَوُوا وَلاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ فَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَشَدُّ اخْتِلاَفًا

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pass through the row from one side to the other; he used to set out chests and shoulders in order, and say: Do not be irregular. And he would say: Allah and His angels bless those who are near the first rows.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَخَلَّلُ الصَّفَّ مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ يَمْسَحُ صُدُورَنَا وَمَنَاكِبَنَا وَيَقُولُ لاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلاَئِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الأُوَلِ

let those of your who are sedate and prudent be near me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِيَلِنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ

the Prophet said: "Let those among you with understanding and reason be close to me, then those after them, then those after them. And do not separate or dissention will occur among your hearts, and beware of the commotion of the markets."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لِيَلِيَنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ وَلاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَهَيْشَاتِ الأَسْوَاقِ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَأَبِي مَسْعُودٍ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ وَالْبَرَاءِ وَأَنَسٍ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gently pat our shoulders (to make sure the row was straight) at the time of prayer, and he-would say:'Keep (the rows) straight; do not differ from one another lest your hearts would be afflicted with discord. Let those who are mature and wise stand closest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them."' Abu Mas'ud said: Today, there is much disharmony among you. ,Abu 'Abdur-Rabin (An-Nasai)said: (One of the narrators) Abu Ma'mar's name is 'Abdullah bin Sakhbarah.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَيَقُولُ لاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأَحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ فَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَشَدُّ اخْتِلاَفًا قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَخْبَرَةَ

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go between the rows from one side to another, patting our shoulders and chests and saying: 'Do not make your rows ragged or your hearts will be filled with enmity toward one another.' And he used to say: 'Allah and His angels send Salah upon the front rows."'

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَتَخَلَّلُ الصُّفُوفَ مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ إِلَى نَاحِيَةٍ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا وَصُدُورَنَا وَيَقُولُ لاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلاَئِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الْمُتَقَدِّمَةِ

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, and he noticed a man whose chest was outside the row. He said, 'Stand together and do not differ, for if you do, your hearts will differ.'"

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَأَى رَجُلًا خَارِجًا صَدْرُهُ مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَقَالَ اسْتَوُوا وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Allah and the angels send blessings upon the first row.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 999)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ

[AI] From the Prophet ﷺ that he used to come to the back of the row to the last position and even out the chests and shoulders of the people, and he would say, "Do not differ, lest your hearts differ. Verily, Allah and His angels pray upon the first ranks."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَأْتِي نَاحِيَةَ الصَّفِّ إِلَى النَّاحِيَةِ الْقُصْوَى يُسَوِّي مِنْ صُدُورِ الْقَوْمِ وَمَنَاكِبِهِمْ وَيَقُولُ «لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الْأُوَلِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to us after the prayer was established, and he would wipe our shoulders and say, "Arrange your rows and do not differ, for your hearts may differ. Let those among you who have knowledge and authority lead, and beautify the Quran with your voices. Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the front line."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَأْتِينَا إِذَا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَيَمْسَحُ عَوَاتِقَنَا وَيَقُولُ «أَقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَلْيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى وَزَيِّنُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَصْوَاتِكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصَّفِّ الْمُقَدَّمِ»

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَيَقُولُ «لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ» قَالَ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ فَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَشَدُّ اخْتِلَافًا

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to go between the rows from one side to another, patting our shoulders and chests and saying: 'Do not make your rows ragged or your hearts will be filled with enmity toward one another.' And he used to say: 'Allah and His angels send Salah upon the front rows."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 811)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَخَلَّلُ الصَّفَّ مِنْ نَاحِيَتِهِ إِلَى نَاحِيَتِهِ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا وَصُدُورَنَا وَيَقُولُ «لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ» وَكَانَ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الْمُقَدَّمَةِ»

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gently pat our shoulders (to make sure the row was straight) at the time of prayer, and he would say: 'Keep (the rows) straight; do not differ from one another lest your hearts should suffer from discord. Let those who are mature and wise stand closest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 812)

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ عَوَاتِقَنَا وَيَقُولُ «اسْتَوُوا وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَلِيَلِينِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ»

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَيَلِيَنِّي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الْأَحْلَامِ وَالنُّهَى ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِف قُلُوبُكُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَهَوَشَاتِ الْأَسْوَاقِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to come to us when we stood up to pray and he would wipe our necks and chests and say, "Do not differ, for if you differ, your hearts will differ. Indeed, Allah and His angels send prayers upon the first row or he said, the rows."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِينَا إِذَا قُمْنَا إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَيَمْسَحُ عَوَاتِقَنَا وَصُدُورَنَا وَيَقُولُ لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ أَوْ قَالَ الصُّفُوفِ الْأُوَلِ

let those of your who are sedate and prudent be near me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 674)

"استوُوا وَلَا تختلفوا فتَخْتَلِفَ قلوبُكم، وَلَيلِيَنى مِنكُمْ أُولُو الأحْلامِ والنُّهى، ثم الذين يَلونَهُمْ، ثم الذين يلونَهُمْ ".

"سوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، لَا تَخْتَلفْ قُلُوبُكُمْ".

"لِيَلِينِّى مِنكُمْ أُولُو الأحْلام وَالنُّهَى، ثُمَّ الّذينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، وَلَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ، وإيَاكمْ وهَيشَاتِ الأسْوَاقِ".

"لا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلوبُكُمْ".

"لا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ، إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلائكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الْمقَدَّمَةِ".

"كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَمْسَحُ صُدُورَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ مِنْ هَاهُنَا إِلَى هَاهُنَا وَيَقُولُ: سوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ".

"كَانَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكبنَا في الصَّلَاةِ فَيَقُولُ: لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ لِيَلِيَنِى مِنْكُم أُولُو الأَرْحَامِ وَالنُّهَى، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ".
