"Some people were delivering Khutbah in Ash-Sham, and among them were Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. So the last of them, a man called Murrah bin Ka'b, stood, and he said: 'If it were not for a Hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would not have stood (to address you). He ﷺ mentioned the tribulations, and that they would be coming soon. Then a man who was concealed by a garment passed by. So he said: "This one will be upon guidance that day." So I went towards him, and it was 'Uthman bin 'Affan. I turned, facing him, and I said: "This one?" He said: "Yes."

أَنَّ خُطَبَاءَ قَامَتْ بِالشَّامِ وَفِيهِمْ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ آخِرُهُمْ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ مُرَّةُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ لَوْلاَ حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا قُمْتُ وَذَكَرَ الْفِتَنَ فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فِي ثَوْبٍ فَقَالَ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ قَالَ فَأَقْبَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا قَالَ نَعَمْ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَوَالَةَ وَكَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ

"The Messenger of Allah mentioned a Fitnah (tribulation) that had drawn nigh. Then a man passed by with his head covered. The Messenger of Allah said: 'On that day, this man will be following right guidance.' I leapt up and took hold of 'Uthman's arms, then I turned to face the Messenger of Allah and said: 'This man?' He said: 'This man.'"

ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ رَأْسُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى فَوَثَبْتُ فَأَخَذْتُ بِضَبْعَىْ عُثْمَانَ ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا قَالَ هَذَا

[AI] When Uthman was killed, the speechmakers in Iliya stood up. Then, a man from the companions of the Prophet Mohammed ﷺ , named Murra bin Ka'b, stood up and said, "If it weren't for a conversation that I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I would not have stood up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned a sedition, and I consider this to be it. Ismail then approached it with doubt." Then, a man passed by, appearing convinced, and he said, "This is the truth and his companions on that day. So, I went and held onto his shoulder and turned towards the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Is this it?' He said, 'Yes.' Then, it was Uthman."

لَمَّا قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ قَامَ خُطَبَاءُ بِإِيلِيَاءَ فَقَامَ مِنْ آخِرِهِمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يُقَالُ لَهُ مُرَّةُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ لَوْلَا حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا قُمْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ فِتْنَةً وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ فَقَرَّبَهَا شَكَّ إِسْمَاعِيلُ فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌمُتَقَنِّعٌ فَقَالَ هَذَا وَأَصْحَابُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْحَقِّ فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَأَخَذْتُ بِمَنْكِبِهِ وَأَقْبَلْتُ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ

[AI] If it weren't for a conversation I had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I would not have stood up to hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention a calamity that will come close, and then a man passed by wearing fine clothes, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On that day, he and his companions will be upon the truth and guidance." So I said, "Is this so, O Messenger of Allah?" And I turned my face towards him, so he said, "Indeed, it is Uthman."

لَوْلَا حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا قُمْتُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُتقَنَّعٌ فَقَالَ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ وَأَصْحَابُهُ عَلَى الْحَقِّ وَالْهُدَى فَقُلْتُ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ وَأَقْبَلْتُ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ هَذَا فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned a trial and emphasized its seriousness. Then a man with disheveled hair passed by, and he said, "This is the truth today," and I quickly followed him or said, "I caught up with him," and I held his thumb and said, "Is this you, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "No, that is Uthman ibn Affan."

ذَكَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا وَعَظَّمَهَا قَالَ ثُمَّ مَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُتَقَنِّعٌ فِي مِلْحَفَةٍ فَقَالَ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْحَقِّ فَانْطَلَقْتُ مُسْرِعًا أَوْ قَالَ مُحْضِرًا فَأَخَذْتُ بِضَبْعَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ هَذَا فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ

[AI] I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he mentioned a trial and drew it near. Then a man passed by wearing a turban, and he said, "This person today is upon guidance." He (the Prophet) said, "So I followed him until I held onto his two fingers, and I turned his face towards me and revealed his head, and I said, 'Is this you, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Yes, indeed, this is 'Uthman ibn 'Affan.'"

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُتَقَنِّعٌ فَقَالَ هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى قَالَ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ حَتَّى أَخَذْتُ بِضَبْعَيْهِ فَحَوَّلْتُ وَجْهَهُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَشَفْتُ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ

[AI] "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioning a trial that would cause poverty. Then, a masked man dressed in a garment passed by him. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'This person today is on the right guidance.' I approached him and behold, it was Uthman ibn Affan. I turned towards him and asked, 'Is it you?' He replied, 'Yes.'"

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّ بِهَا فَمَرَّ بِهِ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فِي ثَوْبٍ فَقَالَ «هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى» فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَأَقْبَلْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقُلْتُ هُوَ هَذَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Adversities will spread on the earth like the patches of a cow." A veiled man then passed by and said, "This is true for today." So, I approached him and held onto the edges of his garment and asked, "Is this him, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes, it is." Thus, it was Uthman.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يُفْتَحُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فِتَنٌ كَصَيَاصِيِّ الْبَقَرِ» فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فَقَالَ «هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْحَقِّ» فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَأَخَذْتُ بِمَجَامِعِ ثَوْبِهِ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا هُوَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «هَذَا» قَالَ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ

[AI] I was with the Prophet ﷺ when he mentioned a trial, so he brought it closer. Then a masked man passed by and said, "This is the truth today." So, I stood up and held him by his two fingers, and I turned his face towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this him?" He said, "Yes." It was Uthman ibn Affan.

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ فَقَالَ «هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْحَقِّ» فَقُمْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَأَخَذْتُ بِضَبْعَيْهِ فَأَقْبَلْتُ بِوَجْهِهِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ

"عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَجْرَة قَالَ: كُنَّا عِنْدَ رسولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَذكَرَ فَتْنَةً فَقَرَّبها ثُمَّ مَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقْنَعُ الرَّأسِ فَقَالَ: وَهَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدى: أَوْ قَالَ عَلَى الْحَقِّ فَقُمتُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ فأَخَذْتُ بِعَضُدَيْهِ وأقْبَلْتُ بِوجْهِهِ إِلى النَّبِىِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فإِذَا هُوَ عُثمانُ بنُ عَفَّانَ".

"أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ ؟ ذَكر فتنةً حَاضِرَة فَقَربَها، فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنّعٌ رَأسهُ بِرِدَائِهِ نِصف النَّهارِ في شِدَّةِ الْحَرِّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ هَذَا وأَصْحَابهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدى فَقُمتُ فَأَخَذْتُ بِمنكَبَيْه وَحسرت عَن رَأسِهِ، وَأقْبَلتُ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَقُلتُ يَا رَسُولَ الله هَذَا؟ قَالَ: نَعَم فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمانُ".

"عَنْ أَبِى قِلَابَةَ قَالَ: لَمَّا قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ قَامَ مُرَّةُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ: لَوْلَا حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ مَا قُمْتُ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ الله ﷺ ذَكَرَ فِتْنَةً فقربها فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ بِرِدَائِهِ، فَقَاَل رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : هَذَا وَأَصْحَابُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْحَقِّ" فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَأَخذْتُ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ الله ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا؟ قَالَ: "نَعَمْ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ".
