"بَعَثَ النبىُّ ﷺ رَجُلًا مِنْ بنى مَخْزُوم عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ، فَأَرَادَ أَبُو رَافِعٍ أَنْ يَتْبَعَهُ، قَالَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا لَا تَحِلُّ لَنَا الصَّدَقَة، وأَنَّ مَولَى الْقَوم مِنْ أَنفُسِهِم".

So he said: "Not until I ask the Messenger of Allah." So he went to the Prophet to ask him, and he said: "Charity is not lawful for us, and to be the Mawda of a people to be the same as them."

The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I am from the family of Muhammad and charity is not permissible for us. However, it is allowed for the leader of a people to take from the wealth of their own people."

Abu Rafa' agreed and they went to the Prophet ﷺ to ask for his permission. When they approached him, they asked for permission and the man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am the servant of the people from themselves and we are not allowed to receive charity." The Prophet ﷺ then mentioned in this narration that the Banu Hashim and the Banu Muttalib were also forbidden from receiving charity. And likewise, they are mentioned in prayers for them. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Charity does not become permissible for us, and the master of a people cannot take it from his own people." Then Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah reported to us, who informed Abu Amr ibn Matar, who narrated from Al-Fadl ibn Al-Habbab Al-Jumahi, who mentioned it in a similar manner.
