[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "There was a servant among the servants of Allah who did not have any religion towards Allah. He lived until his old age, and there remained some time of his life. He realized that he did not produce any good deeds for Allah. So, he called his children and asked them, "What do you know about me?" They replied, "The best thing about you, O our father." He said, "I never leave any wealth with any of you except that I take it back from him, or you would do as I command you to do." He took a covenant from them and swore by his Lord that when he dies, they should burn him with fire until his body turns to ashes, then they should crush the ashes and scatter them in the wind." He did exactly as he instructed them. By the Lord of Muhammad, when he died, Allah brought him back in a better form than he had ever been. He was presented before his Lord, who asked him, "What made you enter the fire?" He replied, "I feared You, O Lord." Allah said, "Indeed, I have forgiven you, for I have heard your sincere repentance." Abu Muhammad (the narrator) commented, "He repented and turned to Allah sincerely."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ كَانَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ وَكَانَ لَا يَدِينُ لِلَّهِ دِينًا وَإِنَّهُ لَبِثَ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ مِنْهُ عُمُرٌ وَبَقِيَ عُمُرٌ فَعَلِمَ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَبْتَئِرْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَيْرًا فَدَعَا بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ أَبٍ تَعْلَمُونِي؟ قَالُوا خَيْرُهُ يَا أَبَانَا قَالَ فَإِنِّي لَا أَدَعُ عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ مَالًا هُوَ مِنِّي إِلَّا أَخَذْتُهُ أَوْ لَتَفْعَلُنَّ مَا آمُرُكُمْ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا وَرَبِّي قَالَ أَمَّا أَنَا إِذَا مُتُّ فَخُذُونِي فَأَحْرِقُونِي بِالنَّارِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ حُمَمًا فَدُقُّونِي ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ بِهِ وَرَبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ حِينَ مَاتَ فَجِيءَ بِهِ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانَ قَطُّ فَعُرِضَ عَلَى رَبِّهِ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى النَّارِ؟ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ يَا رَبِّ قَالَ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ لَرَاهِبًا قَالَ «فَتِيبَ عَلَيْهِ» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد يَبْتَئِرُ يَدَّخِرُ

[AI] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "There was a man among the worshipers of Allah to whom Allah gave wealth and children, and he did not recognize Allah's religion. He said, 'Yazid did not stay long after Umar passed away, and Umar stayed long but eventually realized that not being present in front of Allah is better. He called his sons and said, 'O my sons, what do you think of me?' They replied, 'You are the best father, O our father.' He said, 'By Allah, I will not leave anything with any one of you that is mine. Either I will take it from you, or you will do as I command.' He took a pact from them and said, 'If I die, then take me and throw me in the fire until I turn into ashes. Then grind me and scatter me in the wind, for perhaps I will mislead Allah.' He fulfilled this request, and by the Lord of Muhammad, when he passed away, he was brought in the best state. He was presented before his Lord, and Allah said, 'What made you fear the fire, O my servant?' He replied, 'I feared You, O my Lord.' Allah said, 'Indeed, I have heard the renunciant monk, Yazid. Yazid, I hear you as a renunciant, so intercede on his behalf.' Bahz then narrated this hadith from Hasan and Qatadah, who narrated it from Yazid or Allah guided him, doubted Yahya's report."

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللهِ أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا وَكَانَ لَا يَدِينُ اللهَ دِينًا قَالَ يَزِيدُ فَلَبِثَ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ عُمُرٌ وَبَقِيَ عُمُرٌ تَذَكَّرَ فَعَلِمَ أَنْ لَمْ يَبْتَئِرْ عِنْدَ اللهِ خَيْرًا دَعَا بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ يَا بَنِيَّ أَيَّ أَبٍ تَعْلَمُونِي ؟ قَالُوا خَيْرَهُ يَا أَبَانَا قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَا أَدَعُ عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ مَالًا هُوَ مِنِّي إِلَّا أَنَا آخِذُهُ مِنْهُ أَوْ لَتَفْعَلُنَّ مَا آمُرُكُمْ بِهِ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا قَالَ إِمَّا لَا فَإِذَا مُتُّ فَخُذُونِي فَأَلْقُونِي فِي النَّارِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ حُمَمًا فَدُقُّونِي قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ كَأَنَّهُ يَقُولُ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ ذَرُّونِي فِي الرِّيحِ لَعَلِّي أَضِلُّ اللهَ قَالَ فَفُعِلَ بِهِ ذَلِكَ وَرَبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ حِينَ مَاتَ قَالَ فَجِيءَ بِهِ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانَ فَعُرِضَ عَلَى رَبِّهِ فَقَالَ مَاحَمَلَكَ عَلَى النَّارِ؟ قَالَ خَشِيتُكَ يَا رَبَّاهُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَسْمَعَنَّ الرَّاهِبَةَ قَالَ يَزِيدُ أَسْمَعُكَ رَاهِبًا فَتِيبَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ بَهْزٌ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ الْحَسَنَ وَقَتَادَةَ وَحَدَّثَانِيهِ فَتِيبَ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ فَتَابَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ شَكَّ يَحْيَى

[AI] I heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ saying, "There was a servant among the servants of Allah to whom Allah gave wealth and children. He did not worship Allah sincerely until he reached a point in his life where his age decreased and he had a clear understanding. He knew that nothing would remain with Allah except what is good. So he called his sons and asked them, 'My children, what kind of father do you know me to be?' They replied, 'You are the best of fathers, O our father.' He said, 'By Allah, I will not leave any of my wealth with any of you except that I take it for myself. And you shall indeed do as I command you.' He took a covenant from them by the Lord of Muhammad. He said, 'If I die, then throw me into the fire until I become coal. Then crush me and scatter me in the wind.' He said, 'It is as if I can see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ holding his hand on his thigh and then let me go in the wind so that Allah may misguide me.' They did that to him. And by the Lord of Muhammad! When he died, he was brought to his Lord in the best manner he had ever been. He was presented before his Lord and his Lord said to him, 'What made you fear the fire?' He said, 'O my Lord, it was fear of You.' He said, 'I heard you to be a religious monk, so I forgave you.'"

سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللهِ أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا فَكَانَ لَا يَدِينُ اللهَ دِينًا فَلَبِثَ حَتَّى إِذَا ذَهَبَ مِنْهُ عُمُرٌ وَبَقِيَ عُمُرٌ تَذَكَّرَ فَعَلِمَ أَنْ لَنْ يَبْتَئِرَ عِنْدَ اللهِ خَيْرًا دَعَا بَنِيهِ فَقَالَ أَيَّ أَبٍ تَعْلَمُونِي؟ قَالُوا خَيْرَهُ يَا أَبَانَا قَالَ فَوَاللهِ لَا أَدَعُ عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ مَالًا هُوَ مِنِّي إِلَّا أَنَا آخِذُهُ مِنْهُ وَلَتَفْعَلُنَّ بِي مَا آمُرُكُمْ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا وَرَبِّي فَقَالَ إِمَّا لَا فَإِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَلْقُونِي فِي النَّارِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ حُمَمًا فَدُقُّونِي قَالَ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ اذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ لَعَلِّي أَضِلُّ اللهَ قَالَ فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ بِهِ وَرَبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ حِينَ مَاتَ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فِي أَحْسَنِ مَا كَانَ قَطُّ فَعُرِضَ عَلَى رَبِّهِ فَقَالَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى النَّارِ؟ قَالَ خَشْيَتُكَ يَا رَبَّاهُ قَالَ إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ لَرَاهِبًا فَتِيبَ عَلَيْهِ

[AI] I witnessed Abu Umaymah while he was in the throes of death. He said, "If I die, then treat me as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to treat our deceased. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When one of your brethren dies, and you have leveled the earth over his grave, let one of you stand at the head of his grave, and say, 'O So-and-So, son of So-and-So.' For verily, he hears him but does not respond. Then let him say, 'O So-and-So, son of So-and-So.' For verily, he sits up straight. Then let him say, 'O So-and-So, son of So-and-So,' for verily, he says, 'Guide us, may Allah have mercy on you, but you do not perceive.' Then let him say, 'Remember what you used to say in the world: testimony that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that you were pleased with Allah as your Lord, with Islam as your religion, with Muhammad as your Prophet, and with the Quran as your Imam. For verily, Munkar and Nakir will come to him, and one of them will take his hand and say, 'Come with us, where we shall seat ourselves with one who has been taught his argument.' Then Allah shall be his advocate against them.' A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what if his mother doesn't know him?' He said, 'Then he will be attributed to Hawwa, O son of Hawwa.'"

شَهِدْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ وَهُوَ فِي النَّزْعِ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَاصْنَعُوا بِي كَمَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نصْنَعَ بِمَوْتَانَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِذَا مَاتَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ إِخْوَانِكُمْ فَسَوَّيْتُمِ التُّرَابَ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ فَلْيَقُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى رَأْسِ قَبْرِهِ ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانَةَ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْمَعُهُ وَلَا يُجِيبُ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانَةَ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَوِي قَاعِدًا ثُمَّ يَقُولُ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانَةَ فَإِنَّهُ يَقُولُ أَرْشِدْنَا رَحِمَكَ اللهُ وَلَكِنْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ فَلْيَقُلْ اذْكُرْ مَا خَرَجْتَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَأَنَّكَ رَضِيتَ بِاللهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيًّا وَبِالْقُرْآنِ إِمَامًا فَإِنَّ مُنْكَرًا وَنَكِيرًا يَأْخُذُ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْا بِيَدِ صَاحِبِهِ وَيَقُولُ انْطَلِقْ بِنَا مَا نَقْعُدُ عِنْدَ مَنْ قَدْ لُقِّنَ حُجَّتَهُ فَيَكُونُ اللهُ حَجِيجَهُ دُونَهُمَا فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَعْرِفْ أُمَّهُ؟ قَالَ «فَيَنْسُبُهُ إِلَى حَوَّاءَ يَا فُلَانَ بْنَ حَوَّاءَ»

He lived for some time, and then there remained a small portion of his life. He asked his children, 'What kind of a father have I been to you?' They replied, 'You have been a good father.' He said, 'By Allah, I did not keep any money with me that belonged to anyone, except that I returned it to its rightful owner, or fulfill your rights upon me.' Then he made a will, and said, 'If I die, then burn me with fire, then crush me, and scatter me on a windy day. Perhaps Allah will find me more forgiving.' He (the man) died, so they gathered and it was said to him (the man's soul), 'What led you to do what you have done?' He replied, 'I feared Your punishment.' It was said to him, 'Turn away from the one going (to take you) and intercede for him.'"

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ كَانَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ عَبَّادِ اللهِ آتَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا فَذَهَبَ مِنْ عُمُرِهِ عُمُرٌ وَبَقِيَ عُمُرٌ فَقَالَ لِبَنِيهِ أَيَّ أَبٍ كُنْتُ لَكُمْ؟ قَالُوا خَيْرَ أَبٍ قَالَ إِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا أَنَا بِتَارِكٍ عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ مَالًا كَانَ مِنِّي إِلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَخَذْتُهُ أَوْ تَفْعَلُوا بِي مَا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا قَالَ إِمَّا لَا فَانْظُرُوا إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي بِالنَّارِ ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِي ثُمَّ انْظُرُوا يَوْمًا ذَا رِيحٍ فَأَذْرُونِي لَعَلِّي أَضَلُّ اللهَ قَالَ فَدُعِيَ فَاجْتَمَعَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ خَشِيتُ عَذَابَكَ قَالَ اسْتَقْبِلْ ذَاهِبًا فَتِيبَ عَلَيْهِ

"إذَا ماتَ الرَّجُلُ منْكُمْ فدفَنتُمُوه فليقمُ أحدُكُمْ عِنْدَ رأسِه فليقُلْ: يا فلانُ بنَ فلانةَ، فإِنَّه، فإِنَّه سَيسْمعُ، فليَقُل: يا فلانُ بن فلانةَ، فإنه سَيَسْتوى قاعدًا، فليقلْ: يا فلانُ بنَ فلانَة، فإِنَّه سيقول له: أرْشدنى يرْحمُكَ الله، فليَقُلْ: أذكُرْ ما خرجْتَ عليه من الدُّنيا (اذكر) شهادَةَ أن لا إلهَ إلَّا الله، وإنَّ محمدًا عبْدُه ورسُولُه، وأنَّ الساعةَ آتيةُ لَا ريبَ فيِها، وأن الله باعثٌ منْ في القبورِ -فإِنَّ منكرًا ونكيرًا عِنْد ذلك يأخذُ كلُّ واحدٍ بيَدِ صاحبِه: قُم ما تَصنَعُ عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ لُقِّنَ حُجَّتَه؟ فيكونُ الله تعالى حَجيجَهما دونه".

"إذَا ماتَ أحدٌ مِنْ إِخْوانِكم، فنثرْتُمْ عليهْ التُرابَ فليقُمْ رجلٌ مِنْكم عِنْدَ رأسه، ثُمّ ليقُلْ: يا فلانُ بن فلانة فإِنه يَسمْعُ، ولكنَّهُ لا يجيبُ، ثُمَّ ليقل: يا فلانُ بنَ فلانةَ، فإِنَّه يسْتوى جالسًا، ثُمَّ ليقلْ: "يا فلْانُ ابن فلانةَ، فإِنَّه يقولُ، أرشدنا رَحَمكَ الله، ولكن لا تشعرونَ ثُمَّ ليقلْ: اذكَرْ ما خرجْتَ عليه مِنَ الدَّنيا، شهادةَ أن لَّا إلهَ

إلَّا الله، وأن محمدًا عبده ورسولُهُ، وأنَّكَ رضيتَ بالله ربًّا، وبمحمدٍ نبيًّا، وبالإِسلام دينًا، وبالقرآنِ إمامًا، فإِنَّه إذا فعلَ ذَلك أخَذَ مُنكرٌ ونكيرٌ أحدهُما بيدِ صاحبهِ ثُمَّ يقولُ له: اخرج بنَا مِنْ عِنْد هذا، ما نَصْنَعُ به، وقَدْ لُقن حُجَّتَه؟ ولَكِنَّ الله ﷻ (حُجَّتُه) دُونَهم، قال رجلٌ: يا رسول الله! فإِنْ لمْ أعْرفْ أُمَّهُ قال: انْسبْهُ إلى حواءَ (اذكر فلان بن حواء).

"كَانَ عَبْدٌ منْ عِبَاد اللهِ آتاهُ الله مالًا ووَلدًا، فَذَهْبَ مِنْ عُمُره عُمُر، وبَقِى عُمُرٌ، فقَال: لِبَنِيهِ: أيُّ أبِّ كنْتُ لَكُمْ؟ ، قالوا: خَيرَ أبٍ، قال: إِنى وَاللهِ مَا أنا بتَاركٍ عِنْدَ أحَد مَالًا كان مِنِّي إِليهِ إلا أخذْتهُ أوْ تَفْعَلُونَ بى مَا أقْولُ لكمْ؟ ، فأخَذَ مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا ()، قال: أمالًا فانْظُروا: إذا أنا مِتُّ فأحْرقونِى بالنَّارِ، ثُمَّ اسْحَقُونِى () ثُمَّ انْظُرُوا يوْمًا ذَا ريحٍ فأذْرُونِى لعَلِّى أُضِلُّ اللهَ، فدعِى فاجْتَمَع فَقِيلَ لَهُ: ما حمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنْعتَ؟ ، قال: خَشْيَةُ عَذَابِك، قال: استقل ذاهِبًا فتيبَ عَليهِ".

"يَا أَبَا أُمَامَةَ: أَلاَ أُدلُّكَ عَلَى كَلِمَاتٍ هُنَّ خَيْرٌ لِلْمَيِّتِ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا وَمَا غَابَتْ عَلَيهِ الشَّمْسُ وَطَلَعَتْ: إِذَا مَاتَ أَخُوكُمُ الْمُؤمِنُ وَفَرَغْتُم مِنْ دَفْنِهِ، فَلْيَقُم أَحدُكُمْ عِنْدَ قَبْرِهِ، ثُمَّ ليَقُلْ: يَا فُلاَن بْنَ فُلاَنَة، وَالَّذِى نَفْسى بِيَدِهِ إِنَّهُ لَيَسْتَوِى قَاعِدًا، ثُمَّ ليَقُولُ: يَا فُلاَن بْنَ فُلاَنَة، فَيَقُولُ: أَرْشِدْنَا إِلَى مَا عِنْدَكَ -يَرْحَمُكَ الله- فَلْيَقُلِ: اذْكُرْ مَا خَرَجْت عَلَيْهِ مِنْ الدُّنْيَا: شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لاَ إِلهَ إِلَّا الله، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ الله، وَقَدْ كُنْتَ رَضِيتَ بِالله رَبًا وبِالإِسْلاَمِ دِينًا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيّا، فَيَقُومُ مُنْكَرٌ فَيَأخُذُ بِيَد نَكِيرٍ، فَيَقُولُ: قُمْ بِنَا، مَا يُقْعِدُنَا عِنْدَ هَذَا، وَقَدْ لُقِّنَ حُجَّتَهُ؟ وَيَكُونُ الله حَجِيجَهُمَا دُونَهُ، قيل: إِنْ كُنْتُ لاَ أَحْفَظُ اسمَ أُمِّهِ؟ قَالَ: فَانْسُبْهُ إِلَى حَوَّاءَ".
