In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to be called brokers, but the Prophet ﷺ came upon us one day, and called us by a better name than that, saying: O company of merchants, unprofitable speech and swearing takes place in business dealings, so mix it with sadaqah (alms).

كُنَّا فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَمَرَّ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ أَحْسَنُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

"At the time of the Messenger of Allah we used to be called Samasir (brokers). The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were selling and called us by a name that was better than that. He said: 'O merchants (Tujjar), this selling involves lies and (false) oaths, so mix some charity with it.'"

كُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَبِيعُ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِ اسْمِنَا فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ الْحَلِفُ وَالْكَذِبُ فَشُوبُوا بَيْعَكُمْ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

"In Al-Madinah we used to buy and sell Wasqs (of goods), and we used to call ourselves Samasir (brokers), and the people used to call us like that. The Messenger of Allah came out to us one day, and called us by a name that was better than that which we called ourselves and which the people called us. He said: 'O Tujjar (traders), your selling involves (false) oaths and lies, so mix some charity with it.'"

كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ نَبِيعُ الأَوْسَاقَ وَنَبْتَاعُهَا وَكُنَّا نُسَمِّي أَنْفُسَنَا السَّمَاسِرَةَ وَيُسَمِّينَا النَّاسُ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الَّذِي سَمَّيْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَسَمَّانَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّهُ يَشْهَدُ بَيْعَكُمُ الْحَلِفُ وَالْكَذِبُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

"We used to trade in the markets of Al-Madinah and we used to call ourselves as-Samasir (brokers) and the people called us that, but the Messenger of Allah came out to s and called us by a name that was better than what we called ourselves. He said: "O merchants (Tujjar)! Selling involves (false) oaths and idle talk, so mix some charity with it,"" (Sahih )

"At the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to be called brokers, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by us and called by a name that was better than that. He said: 'O merchants, selling involves (false) oaths and idle talk, so mix some charity with it."'

[AI] We used to buy goods in the city and we were called brokers. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, and he named us with a name that is better than what we used to call ourselves. He said: "O merchants, indeed this business involves idle talk and swearing, so purify it with charity."

كُنَّا نَبْتَاعُ الْأَوْسَاقَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ قَالَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ أَحْسَنُ مِمَّا كُنَّا نُسَمِّي بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

[AI] The messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us while we were selling slaves and we were called the brokers. He said, "O merchants, know that your trade involves falsehood or swearing. Purify it with charity or something from charity."

خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَبِيعُ الرَّقِيقَ نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ بَيْعَكُمْ هَذَا يُخَالِطُهُ لَغْوٌ أَوْ حَلِفٌ فَشُوبُوهُ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ

[AI] "We used to sell slaves in the market and we were called brokers. Then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , gave us a better name than what we had given ourselves. He said, 'O merchants, this trade involves vain talk and oaths, so make it pure by giving in charity.'"

كُنَّا نَبِيعُ الرَّقِيقَ فِي السُّوقِ وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَسَمَّانَا رسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَحْسَنَ مِمَّا سَمَّيْنَا بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْأَيْمَانُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

[AI] "We used to sell fabrics in the city, and we called ourselves merchants. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and gave us a name that was better than what we used to call ourselves. He said, 'O merchants, this type of transaction is accompanied by idle talk and swearing. Purify it with charity.'"

كُنَّا نَبْتَاعُ الْأَوْسَاقَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَكُنَّا نُسَمِّي أَنْفُسَنَا السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ أَحْسَنَ مِمَّا كُنَّا نُسَمِّي أَنْفُسَنَا بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came to us while we were selling slaves in the city, and we used to call ourselves brokers. He then gave us a better name than what we called ourselves. He said, "O merchants! This trade involves idle talk and oaths, so purify it with charity." This is the wording of the hadith of Thawri.

جَاءَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَبِيعُ الرَّقِيقَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّيَ السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَسَمَّانَا بِأَحْسَنَ مِمَّا سَمَّيْنَا بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْأَيْمَانُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ» هَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الثَّوْرِيِّ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ came to us in the market and said, "O merchants, this market is contrary to an oath, so purify it with charity."

أَتَانَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى السُّوقِ فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذِهِ السُّوقُ يُخَالِفُهَا حَلِفٌ فَشُوبُوهَا بِالصَّدَقَةِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us in the market while we were being called by the brokers. He gave us a name that was better than what we had named ourselves. He said, "O merchants, indeed, this buying and selling of yours is tainted with swearing and idle talk, so purify it with charity."

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالسُّوقِ وَنَحْنُ نُدْعَى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ أَحْسَنَ مِمَّا سَمَّيْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّهُ يُخَالِطُ بَيْعَكُمْ هَذَا الْحَلِفُ وَاللَّغْوُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us while we were selling in the market, and we called ourselves brokers. He said, "O merchants, indeed your market is mixed with idle talk, so purify it with charity or something from charity." And the wording is according to the hadith of Ali ibn Al-Jaad.

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَبِيعُ فِي السُّوقِ وَنَحْنُ نُسَمِّي أَنْفُسَنَا السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ سُوقَكُمْ هَذَا يُخَالِطُهَا اللَّغْوُ فَشُوبُوهَا بِالصَّدَقَةِ أَو بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْجَعْدِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were trading and said, "O merchants, indeed this type of transaction is accompanied by falsehood and swearing, so purify it with charity."

خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِصَدَقَةٍ

[AI] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were transacting in 'Aqiq (a type of precious stone) and we used to call ourselves as middlemen. So, he gave us a name that was better than the name we had given ourselves. He said, 'O group of traders, this trade involves swearing and lying, so purify it with some charity.'"

أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ نَتَبَايَعُ بِالْعَقِيقِ وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ أَحْسَنُ مِمَّا سَمَّيْنَا بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ الْحَلِفُ وَالْكَذِبُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us while we were called the merchants and said to us, "O group of merchants, indeed, the buying and selling that you engage in involves swearing oaths and the presence of the devil, so purify it with charity."

خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَقَالَ لَنَا «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ بَيْعَكُمْ هَذَا يَحْضُرُهُ الْحَلِفُ وَالشَّيْطَانُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِصَدَقَةٍ»

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said: "O merchants! Indeed, your market is mixed with swearing, so purify it with charity or something from charity. And the speech of Sufyan is close to it."

النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ سُوقَكُمْ هَذِهِ يُخَالِطُهَا الْحَلِفُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ أَوْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ وَلَفْظُ سُفْيَانَ قَرِيبٌ مِنْهُ
