The night prayer is prayed in units of two rakahs
A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the night prayer, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The night prayer is two ˹rakahs˺, then two ˹rakahs, and so on˺. Then, when one of you fears that dawn is near, let him pray one rakah, which will make odd what he has already prayed."
أَنَّ رَجُلاً سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ صَلاَةِ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «صَلاَةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى».

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi and Abdullah ibn Umar that a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about night prayers. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Night prayers are two by two, and when you are afraid that dawn is approaching, pray one raka to make what you have prayed odd."

نَادَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ تَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ «يُصَلِّي أَحَدُكُمْ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيَ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى وَاحِدَةً أَوْتَرَتْ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى مِنَ اللَّيْلِ»

نَادَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا بَيْنَهُمَا كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ «مَثْنَى مَثْنَى فَإِذَا خَشِيتَ الصُّبْحَ فَصَلِّ وَاحِدَةً وَسَجْدَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الصُّبْحِ»
