[AI] The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "Hajj (pilgrimage) has been ordained upon you." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, is it obligatory every year?" He said, "No, if I had said it was obligatory to perform Hajj every year, it would have become obligatory and anything beyond that would be voluntary."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجُّ» فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ؟ قَالَ «لَا وَلَوْ قُلْتُهَا لَوَجَبَتْ الْحَجُّ مَرَّةٌ فَمَا زَادَ فَهُوَ تَطَوُّعٌ»

[AI] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ delivered a sermon and said, "O people, the obligation of Hajj has been prescribed upon you." Al-Aqra' ibn Habis stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is it obligatory every year?" He replied, "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory and you would not have been able to fulfill it every year. But it is a voluntary act, and whoever performs it more than once, it is considered a voluntary act of worship."

خَطَبَنَا يَعْنِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجُّ قَالَ فَقَامَ الْأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ فَقَالَ أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ لَوْ قُلْتُهَا لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ لَمْ تَعْمَلُوا بِهَا أَوْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَنْ تَعْمَلُوا بِهَا الْحَجُّ مَرَّةً فَمَنْ زَادَ فَهُوَ تَطَوُّعٌ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) addressed us and said, "O people, the obligation of Hajj has been prescribed upon you." Al-Aqra' ibn Habis stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, should we perform Hajj every year?" He replied, "If I were to say yes, it would become mandatory, but even if it became mandatory, you would not be able to fulfill it every year. So, whoever performs it in addition to the obligatory Hajj, it will be considered as a voluntary (act of worship)."

[AI] "Indeed, Al-Aqra bin Habis asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whether Hajj is obligatory every year. He replied, 'No, rather it is a obligation upon you once. Whoever performs Hajj after that, it is considered voluntary. Even if I had said 'Yes', it would have been obligatory, and even if it had been obligatory, you would not have been able to afford it or obey it.'"

أَنَّ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ الْحَجُّ كُلَّ عَامٍ؟ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ حَجَّةٌ فَمَنْ حَجَّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ تَطَوُّعٌ وَلَوْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ لَمْ تَسْمَعُوا وَلَمْ تُطِيعُوا

[AI] It says, "Indeed, Al-Aqra bin Habis asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if Hajj is obligatory every year. He replied, 'No, rather it is obligatory once, and if I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and if it had become obligatory, you would not have been able to afford it or bear it.'"

أَنَّ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْحَجُّ كُلُّ عَامٍ؟ قَالَ «لَا بَلْ حَجَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَلَوْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ لَمْ تَسْمَعُوا وَلَمْ تُطِيقُوا»

Al-Aqra' bin Habis stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is it obligatory every year?" He replied, "If I say yes, it would become obligatory, and if it becomes obligatory, you would not be able to fulfill it every year. Therefore, whoever performs it in excess, it will be considered a voluntary act of worship."

Sufyan bin Husayn and Muhammad bin Abi Hafsah narrated this from Az-Zuhri, who learned it from Abu Sinan Ad-Dawli. In a narration by Jabir bin Abdullah, Suraqah bin Malik asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is this (taking slaves as captives) a temporary dispensation for us or is it lawful forever?" He answered, "No, rather it is lawful forever."

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ اللهَ كَتَبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجَّ فَقَامَ الْأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ فَقَالَ أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ لَوْ قُلْتُهَا لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ لَمْ تَعْمَلُوا بِهَا وَلَمْ تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَنْ تَعْمَلُوا بِهَا الْحَجُّ مَرَّةٌ فَمَنْ زَادَ فَتَطَوُّعٌ تَابَعَهُ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَفْصَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ وَقَالَ عَقِيلٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سِنَانٍ وَهُوَ أَبُو سِنَانٍ الدُّؤَلِيُّ وَفِي حَدِيثِ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّ سُرَاقَةَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ قَالَ مُتْعَتُنَا هَذِهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لِلْأَبَدِ؟ قَالَ لَا بَلْ لِلْأَبَدِ

[AI] "O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj performed every year?" He replied, "No, rather it is required once. Whoever performs it after that, it will be considered as a voluntary act. Even if I were to say yes, it would become obligatory, but you would not be able to hear and obey. The narration of Suraqah in Umrah has already passed."
