"Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Have you got married O Jabir?" I replied, "Yes." He asked "What, a virgin or a matron?" I replied, "Not a virgin but a matron." He said, "Why did you not marry a young girl who would have fondled with you?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! My father was martyred on the day of Uhud and left nine (orphan) daughters who are my nine sisters; so I disliked to have another young girl of their age, but (I sought) an (elderly) woman who could comb their hair and look after them." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have done the right thing."

لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَلْ نَكَحْتَ يَا جَابِرُ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ مَاذَا أَبِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا قُلْتُ لاَ بَلْ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ فَهَلاَّ جَارِيَةً تُلاَعِبُكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أَبِي قُتِلَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَتَرَكَ تِسْعَ بَنَاتٍ كُنَّ لِي تِسْعَ أَخَوَاتٍ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَجْمَعَ إِلَيْهِنَّ جَارِيَةً خَرْقَاءَ مِثْلَهُنَّ وَلَكِنِ امْرَأَةً تَمْشُطُهُنَّ وَتَقُومُ عَلَيْهِنَّ قَالَ أَصَبْتَ

My father died and left seven or nine girls and I married a matron. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "O Jabir! Have you married?" I said, "Yes." He said, "A virgin or a matron?" I replied, "A matron." he said, "Why not a virgin, so that you might play with her and she with you, and you might amuse her and she amuse you." I said, " ʿAbdullah (my father) died and left girls, and I dislike to marry a girl like them, so I married a lady (matron) so that she may look after them." On that he said, "May Allah bless you," or "That is good."

هَلَكَ أَبِي وَتَرَكَ سَبْعَ بَنَاتٍ أَوْ تِسْعَ بَنَاتٍ فَتَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً ثَيِّبًا فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَزَوَّجْتَ يَا جَابِرُ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا قُلْتُ بَلْ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ فَهَلاَّ جَارِيَةً تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ وَتُضَاحِكُهَا وَتُضَاحِكُكَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَ وَتَرَكَ بَنَاتٍ وَإِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَجِيئَهُنَّ بِمِثْلِهِنَّ فَتَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً تَقُومُ عَلَيْهِنَّ وَتُصْلِحُهُنَّ فَقَالَ بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ أَوْ قَالَ خَيْرًا

[AI] To the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I said: "Did you marry?" He said: "Yes." I said: "A virgin or a divorced woman?" I said: "A divorced woman." He said: "Why not a virgin, with whom you could play and who could play with you?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, my father was killed on the day of Uhud, leaving behind nine daughters. I disliked that I would gather a mother for them who was like them (in age)." But a woman who would comb their hair and take care of them." He said: "You have made the right choice."

لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ نَكَحْتَ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ أَبِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا؟ قُلْتُ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ فَهَلَّا بِكْرًا تُلَاعِبُهَا وَتُلَاعِبُكَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قُتِلَ أَبِي يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَتَرَكَ تسْعَ بَنَاتٍ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَجْمَعَ إِلَيْهِنَّ خَرْقَاءَ مِثْلَهُنَّ وَلَكِنْ امْرَأَةً تُمَشِّطُهُنَّ وَتَقُومُ عَلَيْهِنَّ قَالَ أَصَبْتَ

[AI] I went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition. He asked, "Have you gotten married?" I replied, "Yes." He asked, "Did you marry a virgin or a widow?" I said, "No, I married a widow." He asked, "Don't you desire to have a wife who can play with you and you can play with her?" I said, "I have sisters, so I preferred to marry a woman who can bring them together, comb their hair, and take care of them." He said, "Since you are coming, then be as wise as possible."

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي غَزَاةٍ فَقَالَ «تَزَوَّجْتَ؟ » قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا؟ » قُلْتُ بَلْ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ «فَهَلَّا جَارِيَةً تُلَاعِبُهَا وَتُلَاعِبُكَ؟ » قُلْتُ إِنَّ لِي أَخَوَاتٍ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَتَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً تَجْمَعُهُنَّ وَتُمَشِّطُهُنَّ وَتَقُومُ عَلَيْهِنَّ قَالَ «أَمَا إِنَّكَ قَادِمٌ فَإِذَا قَدِمْتَ فَالْكَيْسَ الْكَيْسَ»

"عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: هَلَكَ أَبِى وَتَرَكَ سَبع بَنَات أوْ تِسْعًا، فَتَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً ثَيِّبًا، فَقَالَ لى رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : تَزَوَّجْتَ يَا جَابِرُ؟ قُلتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيبًا؟ قُلتُ: ثَيِّبًا، قَالَ: فَهَلاًّ جَارِيَة تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ؟ ! أوْ قَالَ: تُضَاجِعُهَا وَتُضَاجِعُكَ؟ ! فَقُلتُ: إِنَّ أَبِى مَاتَ وَتَرَكَ تِسع بَنَات أَوْ سَبْعًا، وَإنِّى كَرِهْتُ أنْ أَجِيئَهُنَّ بِمِثْلِهِنَّ، فَقَالَ: أحْسَنْتَ بَارَكَ الله فِيكَ، وَقَالَ لِى خِيْرًا".
