"عَنْ جَابِرٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ مِنْ عَلَى أُحُدٍ فِى الثَّوْبِ الوَاحِدِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: أَيُّهُم أَكْثَرُ أَخْذًا لِلقُرآنِ؟ فَإِذَا أُشِيرَ إِلَى أَحَدِهِمَا قَدَّمَهُ فِى اللَّحْدِ وَقَالَ: أَنَا شَهِيدٌ عَلَى هَؤُلاَءِ يَومَ القِيَامَةِ، وَأَمَرَ بِدَفْنِهِمْ بِدِمَائهِمْ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ولم يُغَسَّلُوا".

The Prophet ﷺ collected every two martyrs of Uhud (in one grave) and then he would ask, "Which of them knew the Qur'an more?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to shroud two martyrs of Uhud in one sheet and then say, "Which of them knew Qur'an more?" When one of the two was pointed out, he would put him first in the grave. Then he said, "I will be a witness for them on the Day of Resurrection." He ordered them to be buried with their blood (on their bodies). Neither was the funeral prayer offered for them, nor were they washed. Jabir added, "When my father was martyred, I started weeping and uncovering his face. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ stopped me from doing so but the Prophet ﷺ did not stop me. Then the Prophet said, '(O Jabir.) don't weep over him, for the angels kept on covering him with their wings till his body was carried away (for burial).

He said: "I am a witness to these." And he ordered that they be buried with their blood, and that the funeral prayer should not be offered, and they should not be washed.

Jabir bin Abdullah informed him that the Prophet had put two men together in one cloth from those who were killed at (the battle of) Uhud, then he said: "Which of them memorized the more of the Qur'an?" When one of them was indicated to him, he put him in the Lahd (first) and said: "I am a witness for those people on the Day of Judgment." And he ordered that they be buried in their blood, and that they not be prayed over, nor washed.

“Which of them had memorized more Qur’an?” And if one of them was pointed out to him, he would put him in the niche-grave first. And he said: “I am a witness over them.” He commanded that they should be buried with their blood, and that the funeral prayer should not be offered for them and they should not be washed.

[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to combine two people from the martyrs of Uhud in one shroud. Then he would say, "Which of them took more of the Qur'an?" When he was pointed to one of them, he would place him in the grave and say, "I bear witness on behalf of them on the Day of Resurrection." And he ordered them to be buried with their blood and not to offer the funeral prayer for them or wash their bodies. Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said to us, and this is also what we do not know, no one from the trustworthy companions of Al-Zuhri followed Al-Layth in this narration, and they differed with Al-Zuhri on it. We have already explained their difference regarding this matter.
