[Machine] We said, 'O Messenger of Allah! If a man has a wife and she breastfeeds him and he dislikes her and a slave girl and he dislikes her and both of them do not want to become pregnant, what should they do?' He said, 'There is no harm if they do not do that, for that is only fate.'

Why do you practise it? They said: There is a man whose wife has to suckle the child, and if that person has a sexual intercourse with her (she may conceive) which he does not like, and there is another person who has a slave-girl and he has a sexual intercourse with her, but he does not like her to have conception so that she may not become Umm Walad, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: There is no harm if you do not do that, for that (the birth of the child) is something pre- ordained. Ibn 'Aun said: I made a mention of this hadith to Hasan, and he said: By Allah, (it seems) as if there is upbraiding in it (for 'azl).

We said: "A man may have a wife, and he has intercourse with her, but he does not want her to get pregnant, or he may have a concubine, and he has intercourse with her, but he does not want her to get pregnant." He said: "It does not make any difference if you do that, for it is the matter of Al-Qadr."

[Machine] Have you heard anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about al-'azl (coitus interruptus)? He said: Yes, we asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about al-'azl, and he said: What is that? We said: That a man has a wife who is breastfeeding, so he desires her but dislikes the idea of her becoming pregnant. He therefore withdraws from her, and a man has a slave girl and he has no wealth besides her, so he desires her yet dislikes the idea of her becoming pregnant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no harm if you do not do it, for that is a matter that Allah has decreed.

[Machine] The conversation was repeated until it was reported to Abu Sa'id who said: It was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ , so he said: "And what is your opinion regarding this matter?" They said: "A man may have a wife who breastfeeds him, and he dislikes having children from her. And a man may have a slave girl who is intimate with him, and he dislikes her becoming pregnant by him." So he said: "There is no harm if you do that, for it is only predestination." Ibn 'Awn said: So I mentioned it to Al-Hasan, and he said: "There is no harm upon you, as this is a prohibition."
