The Prophet ﷺ heard a man praising another man and he was exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him). "You have destroyed (or cut) the back of the man."

سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَجُلاً يُثْنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَيُطْرِيهِ فِي الْمِدْحَةِ فَقَالَ أَهْلَكْتُمْ أَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ ظَهْرَ الرَّجُلِ

The Prophet ﷺ heard someone praising another and exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have ruined or cut the man's back (by praising him so much).

سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَجُلاً يُثْنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَيُطْرِيهِ فِي مَدْحِهِ فَقَالَ أَهْلَكْتُمْ أَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ ظَهْرَ الرَّجُلِ

You killed him, or you sliced the back of a person. (Using translation from Muslim 3001)

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet ﷺ heard a man praise another man and he was using exaggeration in his praise of him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have destroyed - or broken - the man's back."

سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَجُلاً يُثْنِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَيُطْرِيهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَهْلَكْتُمْ أَوْ قَطَعْتُمْ ظَهْرَ الرَّجُلِ

"لَقَدْ أهْلَكْتُمْ -أَوْ قَطَعْتُم- ظَهْرَ الرَّجُلِ".

"عَن أَبِى مُوسَى قَالَ: سَمِعَ النَّبِىُّ ﷺ رَجُلًا يُثنِى عَلَى رَجُلٍ وَيُطريهِ في الْمدحَةِ، فَقَالَ: لَقَد أَهْلَكْتُمْ أَوْ قَطعْتُم ظَهْرَ هَذَا الرَّجُل".
