Branding animals away from the face

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a donkey branded on the face, and he disapproved of that. He said: By Allah, I will not brand it except on the part farthest from the face. So he ordered that a donkey of his be brought, and it was branded on the two sides of its rump; thus he was the first to brand the two sides of the rump.

مسلم:٢١١٨ – حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ أَنَّ نَاعِمًا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَوْلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ

وَرَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِمَارًا مَوْسُومَ الْوَجْهِ، فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ. قَالَ: فَوَاللَّهِ لاَ أَسِمُهُ إِلاَّ فِي أَقْصَى شَىْءٍ مِنَ الْوَجْهِ، فَأَمَرَ بِحِمَارٍ لَهُ فَكُوِيَ فِي جَاعِرَتَيْهِ، فَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ كَوَى الْجَاعِرَتَيْنِ.

ibnhibban:5624 – Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Ismāʿīl > Ḥarmalah b. Yaḥyá > Ibn Wahb > ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith > Yazīd b. Abū Ḥabīb > Nāʿim Abū ʿAbdullāh a freed slave of Um Salamah > Ibn ʿAbbās

By Allah, I do not cauterise (the animal) but on a part at a distance from the face, and commanded (for the cauterisation) of his ass and it was cauterised on the buttocks and he was the first to cauterise on the buttocks. (Using translation from Muslim 2118)

[Machine] Na'im, the servant of Umm Salama, narrated that he heard Ibn Abbas saying: "I saw the Messenger of Allah reprimanding a horse that was branded on its face. The man said, 'By Allah, I will not name it except the farthest thing from its face.' So the Prophet ordered for a donkey to be brought to him, which he then had its ears cropped."
