The Prophet ﷺ came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that. They replied, "This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So, Moses fasted this day." The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have more claim over Moses than you." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day).

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَرَأَى الْيَهُودَ تَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا قَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ صَالِحٌ هَذَا يَوْمٌ نَجَّى اللَّهُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ عَدُوِّهِمْ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى قَالَ فَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ

When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say: "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am closer to Moses than they." So, he observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدَهُمْ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمًا يَعْنِي عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَظِيمٌ وَهْوَ يَوْمٌ نَجَّى اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ فَصَامَ مُوسَى شُكْرًا لِلَّهِ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْهُمْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of 'Ashura'. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We are closer to Moses than you." Then he ordered that fasting on this day should be observed.

لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ يَصُومُونَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسُئِلُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي أَظْفَرَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ وَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ تَعْظِيمًا لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِصَوْمِهِ

When Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram). The Prophet ﷺ asked them (about it) and they replied, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh." The Prophet ﷺ said (to the Muslims), "We are nearer to Moses than they, so fast on this day."

لَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالْيَهُودُ تَصُومُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُمْ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي ظَهَرَ فِيهِ مُوسَى عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْهُمْ فَصُومُوهُ

It is the day on which Allah granted victory to Moses and (his people) Bani Isra'il over the Pharaoh and we observe fast out of gratitude to Him. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have, and he commanded to observe fast on this day.

They said: This is a day on which Allah gave Moses domination over Pharaoh. We fast on it out of reverence to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have. He then gave orders that it should be observed.

“The Prophet ﷺ came to Al- Madinah, and he found the Jews observing a fast. He said: ‘What is this?’ They said: ‘This is the day when Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh, so Musa fasted this day in gratitude.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘We have more right to Musa than you do.’ So he fasted (that day) and enjoined (others) to fast it also.’”

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَوَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ صُيَّامًا فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ أَنْجَى اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ فِيهِ فِرْعَوْنَ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى شُكْرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ

[AI] He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, 'What is the significance of this day?' They replied, 'This is the day on which Musa (Moses) and his people were saved from Pharaoh.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We have more right to Musa than you, so fast on this day.'"

أَنَّهُ قَالَ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَالْيَهُودُ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُمْ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي ظَهَرَ فِيهِ مُوسَى عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَنْتُمْ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى فَصُومُوهُ»

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, "What is this day that you fast?" They replied, "This is a righteous day, the day on which Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Moses fasted it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have more right to Moses than you do." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted on that day and commanded others to fast as well.

“The Prophet ﷺ came to Al- Madinah, and he found the Jews observing a fast. He asked them about it and they replied, "This is the day when Moses fasted in the face of Pharaoh." The Prophet ﷺ said to his companions, "You have more right to follow Moses than them, so fast on this day."

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَإِذَا الْيَهُودُ قَدْ صَامُوا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُمْ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي ظَهَرَ فِيهِ مُوسَى عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِأَصْحَابِهِ أَنْتُمْ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْهُمْ فَصُومُوهُ

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ crossed paths with some people from the Jews who were fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked, "What is the significance of this fasting?" They replied, "This is the day on which Allah saved Moses and the Children of Israel from drowning, and drowned Pharaoh. On this day, the ark also came to rest on Mount Judi, so Noah and Moses fasted in gratitude to Allah." Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I have a greater right to Moses than they do, and this fasting is more deserving for me." He then commanded his companions to observe the fast.

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِأُنَاسٍ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ قَدْ صَامُوا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا مِنَ الصَّوْمِ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي نَجَّى اللهُ مُوسَى وَبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنَ الْغَرَقِ وَغَرَّقَ فِيهِ فِرْعَوْنَ وَهَذَا يَوْمُ اسْتَوَتْ فِيهِ السَّفِينَةُ عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ فَصَامَ نُوحٌ وَمُوسَى شُكْرًا لِلَّهِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى وَأَحَقُّ بِصَوْمِ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ فَأَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ بِالصَّوْمِ

[231] 2849 Isma'il ibn Ya'qub al-Harrani as-Sabihi reported to us, saying: Ibn Musa, the son of A'yan, reported to us, saying: My father reported to us from al-Harith, meaning the son of 'Umayr, from Ayyub, from Abdullah ibn Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn Abbas of similar account.

قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَوَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُمْ مَا هَذَا؟ فَقَالُوا يَوْمٌ أَنْجَى اللهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ فِيهِ فِرْعَوْنَ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى شُكْرًا لِلَّهِ فَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى وَأَوْلَى بِصِيَامِهِ» فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ [231] 2849 أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ الصَّبِيحِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُوسَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَعْيَنَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ الْحَارِثِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ نَحْوَهُ

They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed.
