[AI] Abu Musa sought permission from Umar three times, but Umar did not grant him permission. So Abu Musa returned and informed Umar of this. Umar asked him, "What prevented you?" Abu Musa replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'If any one of you seeks permission three times and is not granted permission, then let him go back.'" Umar said, "Come to me with proof of this, or else Hammad will punish you." Abu Musa left and entered the mosque, then went to the gathering of the Ansar, and narrated to them the incident and what Umar said to him. They said, "None of us will stand with you except our youngest member." So Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri stood with him and testified. Umar said to him, "We do not accuse you, but the narration from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is severe."

Abu Musa asked ʿUmar to admit him but he was not admitted as ʿUmar was busy, so Abu Musa went back. When ʿUmar finished his job he said, "Didn't I hear the voice of ʿAbdullah bin Qais? Let him come in." ʿUmar was told that he had left. So, he sent for him and on his arrival, he (Abu Musa) said, "We were ordered to do so (i.e. to leave if not admitted after asking permission thrice). ʿUmar told him, "Bring witness in proof of your statement." Abu Musa went to the Ansar's meeting places and asked them. They said, "None amongst us will give this witness except the youngest of us, Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri. Abu Musa then took Abu Saʿid Al-Khudri (to ʿUmar) and ʿUmar said, surprisingly, "Has this order of Messenger of Allah ﷺ been hidden from me?" (Then he added), "I used to be busy trading in markets."

While I was present in one of the gatherings of the Ansar, Abu Musa came as if he was scared, and said, "I asked permission to enter upon ʿUmar three times, but I was not given the permission, so I returned." (When ʿUmar came to know about it) he said to Abu Musa, "Why did you not enter?'. Abu Musa replied, "I asked permission three times, and I was not given it, so I returned, for Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If anyone of you asks the permission to enter thrice, and the permission is not given, then he should return.' " ʿUmar said, "By Allah! We will ask Abu Musa to bring witnesses for it." (Abu Musa went to a gathering of the Ansar and said). "Did anyone of you hear this from the Prophet ﷺ ?" Ubai bin Kaʿb said, "By Allah, none will go with you but the youngest of the people (as a witness)." (Abu Saʿid) was the youngest of them, so I went with Abu Musa and informed ʿUmar that the Prophet ﷺ had said so. (See Hadith No. 277, Vol. 3)

I was sitting in Medina in the company of the Ansar when Abu Musa came trembling with fear. We said to him: What is the matter? He said: 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) sent for me. I went to him and paid him salutation thrice at (his) door but he made no response to me and so I came back. Thereupon he ('Umar) said: What stood in your way that you did not turn up? I said: I did come to you and paid you salutations at your door three times but I was not given any response, so I came back as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: When any one of you seeks permission three times and he is not granted permission, he should come back. Umar said: Bring a witness to support that you say, otherwise I shall take you to task. Ubayy b. Ka'b said: None should stand with him (as a witness) but the youngest amongst the people. Abu Sa'id said: I am the youngest amongst the people, whereupon he said: Then you go with him (to support his contention).

We were in the company of Ubayy b. Ka'b that Abu Musa Ash'ari came there in a state of anger. He stood (before us) and said: I ask you to bear witness in the name of Allah whether anyone amongst you heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Permission (for entering the house) should be sought three times and if permission is granted to you (then get in). otherwise go back. Ubayy b. Ka'b said: What is the iiiatter? He said: I sought permission yesterday from 'Umar b. Khattab three times but he did not permit me, so I came back; then I went to him today and visited him and informed him that I had come to him yesterday and greeted him thrice, then came back, whereupon he said: Yes, we did hear you but be were at that time busy, but why did you not seek permission (further and you must have never gone back until you were permitted to do so). He said: I sought permission (in the manner) that I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ having said (in connection 'With the seeking of permission for entering the house of a stranger). Thereupon he (Hadrat Umar) said: By Allah, I shall torture your back and your stomach unless you bring one who may bear witness to what you state. 'Ubayy b. Ka'b said: By Allah, none should stand with you (to bear testimony) but the youngest amongst us. And he therefore, said to Abu Sa'id: Stand up. So I stood up until I came to Umar and said: I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say this.

Did you not hear the voice of 'Abdullah b. Qais (the Kunya of Abu Musa Ash'ari)? He was called back. and he (Hadrat 'Umar) said: What did prompt you to do it? Thereupon, he said: This is how we have been commanded to act. He (Hadrat 'Umar) said: Bring evidence (in support of) it, otherwise I shall deal (strictly) with you. So he (Abu Musa) set out and came to the meeting of the Ansar and asked them to bear witness before hadrat Umar about this. They (the Companions present there) said: None but the youngest amongst us would bear out this fact. So Abu Sa'id Khudri (who was the youngest one in that company) said: We have been commanded to do so (while visiting the house of other people). Thereupon 'Umar said: This command of Messenger of Allah ﷺ had remained hidden from me up till now due to (my) business in the market.

[AI] I was in a gathering of the Ansar, then Abu Musa came to us looking scared. He said, "Omar ordered me to come to him, so I went to him and sought permission three times, but he did not give me permission, so I returned." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, "Whoever seeks permission three times and is not given permission, then let him go back." Abu Said said, "So Abu Musa came to us scared or startled and said, 'I seek your testimony.' Ubayy ibn Ka'b said, 'No one should go with you except the least of us.' Abu Said said, 'And I was the least among them, so I went with him and testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever seeks permission three times and is not given permission, then let him go back.'"

[AI] Abu Musa sought permission from Umar three times but Umar did not give him permission. So, Abu Musa returned and met Umar who asked him, "What made you come back?" Abu Musa replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever seeks permission three times and is not given permission, then he should return.' Umar said, 'You should come with evidence for this or I will do something about it.' So, Abu Musa went to his people and sought their help in supplicating to Allah. I said, 'I am with you.' They testified in Abu Musa's favor, and Umar left him alone."

[AI] Abu Musa sought permission from Umar three times, but he did not grant it to him. Abu Musa then returned and said, "Did you not hear the voice of Abdullah bin Qais?" They replied, "Yes." Abu Musa said, "Go and call him." They went and called him, and he was summoned. Umar asked him, "What prompted you to do what you did?" Abu Musa replied, "I sought permission three times, but it was not granted to me, so I returned. We used to be instructed to do this." Umar said, "Bring a clear evidence for your actions, or else I will punish you." Abu Musa went to a mosque or a gathering of the Ansar, and they said, "Only our youngest member can bear witness for you." Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri stood up and testified for him. Umar said, "This matter was kept hidden from me regarding the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He has demeaned me by conducting business in the markets."

(Using translation from Muslim 2153c)

bayhaqi:17664[Chain 1] Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ > Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb > al-Shaybānī > Muḥammad b. Shādhān > Qutaybah b. Saʿīd [Chain 2] ʿAlī b. ʿĪsá > Ibrāhīm b. Abū Ṭālib > Ibn Abū ʿUmar > Sufyān > Yazīd b. Khuṣayfah > Busr b. Saʿīd > Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī > Āstaʾdhan

[AI] Abu Musa went to Umar, but he was not given permission, so he left. Umar asked him, "Why didn't you come to me?" Abu Musa replied, "I came and asked for permission three times but was not granted it, so I went back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever seeks permission three times and is not granted it, should go back.'" Umar said to Abu Musa, "Come to me with clear evidence, otherwise I will punish you." Abu Sa'eed said, "Abu Musa came to us in a state of fear or panic. He said, 'I have come to seek your witness.' Ubayy ibn Ka'b said to him, 'Sit down, only the youngest among us will stand with you.' Abu Sa'eed said, 'I was the youngest, so I stood and testified for him in front of Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever seeks permission three times and is not granted it, should go back.'"
