ذِكْرُ الِاسْتِحْبَابِ لِلْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَصُومَ يَوْمًا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ لِيَكُونَ آخِذًا بِالْوَثِيقَةِ فِي صَوْمِهِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ

ibnhibban:3633 – Abū Khalīfah > Abū al-Walīd > Ḥājib b. ʿUmar > al-Ḥakam b. al-Aʿraj

[Machine] "I approached Ibn Abbas while he was sitting beside his robe near Zamzam, and I sat beside him. What a wonderful companion he was! I asked him about Ashura. He sat upright and asked me, "Which aspect of it do you want to know?" I said, "I want to know about its fasting, which day do we fast?" He replied, "When you see the crescent moon of Muharram, then count and start fasting from the ninth day." I asked, "Did Muhammad ﷺ also fast in this manner?" He answered, "Yes.""  

ابن حبّان:٣٦٣٣ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ

انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ عِنْدَ زَمْزَمَ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَنِعْمَ الْجَلِيسُ كَانَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ؟ فَاسْتَوَى جَالِسًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «عَنْ أَيِّ بَابِهِ تَسْأَلُ؟ » قَالَ قُلْتُ عَنْ صِيَامِهِ أَيَّ يَوْمٍ نَصُومُهُ؟ قَالَ «إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ ثُمَّ أَصْبِحْ مِنْ تَاسِعِهِ صَائِمًا» قُلْتُ أَكَذَلِكَ كَانَ يَصُومُ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»

I went to Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be Pleased with both of them) and he was reclining using his mantle as a pillow near the fountain of Zamzam. I said to him: Tell me about fasting on Ashura. He said: When you see the new moon of Muharram then count the (days) and observe fast on the 9th. I said to him: Is it how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed the fast? He said: Yes.  

مسلم:١١٣٣a – وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعُ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ عَنْ حَاجِبِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الأَعْرَجِ قَالَ انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي زَمْزَمَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ صَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ

I came to Ibn 'Abbas who was leaning against his sheet of cloth in the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram). I asked him about fasting on the day of 'Ashurah. He said: When you sight the moon of al-Muharram, count (the days). When the 9th of Muharram comes, fast from the morning. I said: Would Muhammad ﷺ observe this fast ? He replied: Thus Muhammad ﷺ used to fast.  

أبو داود:٢٤٤٦ – حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ غَلاَبٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَخْبَرَنِي حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ جَمِيعًا الْمَعْنَى عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الأَعْرَجِ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ

إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلاَلَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ التَّاسِعِ فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا فَقُلْتُ كَذَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ يَصُومُ فَقَالَ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ يَصُومُ

"I met up with Ibn Abbas while he was reclining on his Rida at the Zamzam (well). So I said: 'Inform me about the Day of Ashura. On which day is it fasted?' He said: 'When you see the crescent of Al-Muharram, then count, then fast on the morning of the ninth day.'" He said: 'I said: Is this how Muhammad fasted it?' He said: 'Yes.'"

أحمد:٢٢١٤ – حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ أَخْبَرَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ غَلابٍ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي بَيْتِ السِّقَايَةِ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ بُرْدَةً لَهُ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ قَالَ عَنْ أَيِّ بَالِهِ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ عَنْ صِيَامِهِ قَالَ

إِذَا أَنْتَ أَهْلَلْتَ الْمُحَرَّمَ فَاعْدُدْ تِسْعًا ثُمَّ أَصْبِحْ يَوْمَ التَّاسِعِ صَائِمًا قَالَ قُلْتُ كَذَا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ قَالَ نَعَمْ

إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعِهِ فَصُمْ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ قُلْتُ أَهَكَذَا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[Machine] "If you see the new moon of Muharram, then count the days. And when you reach the ninth day, observe fasting. Yunus said, 'I was informed about the ruling that he (Prophet Muhammad) said, 'Did Muhammad ﷺ fast like this?' He said, 'Yes, indeed.'"  

أحمد:٣٣٩٣ – حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ

إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعَةٍ فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا قَالَ يُونُسُ فَأُنْبِئْتُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَكَذَاكَ صَامَ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ

[Machine] "When you see the crescent of the month of Muharram, then start preparing, and fast on the ninth day." He said, "I asked, 'Did Muhammad ﷺ used to observe this fast?' He replied, 'Yes.'  

أحمد:٣٢١٢ – حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ سَمِعَهُ مِنَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ انْتَهَيْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي زَمْزَمَ فَقُلْتُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ أَيُّ يَوْمٍ أَصُومُهُ؟ فَقَالَ

إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعَةٍ فَأَصْبِحْ مِنْهَا صَائِمًا قُلْتُ أَكَذَاكَ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ
