34. Book of Sacrifices
[Machine] Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi and Abu Umar al-Hawdi narrated, they said, Shu'ba narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl who said, I heard Hujayy ibn 'Adi say, I heard Ali being asked about the cow and he said, regarding four. He was then asked about the cow with a broken horn and he said, it does not harm you. He was then asked about the lame cow and he said, when it reaches the place of sacrifice. He also said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to perform istishraf of the eye and ear." All these chains of narration are authentic, and they did not rely on the narration of Ibn 'Adi, who was one of the prominent companions of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali.
I came to Utbah ibn AbdusSulami and said: AbulWalid, I went out seeking sacrificial animals. I did not find anything which attracted me except an animal whose teeth have fallen. So I abominated it. What do you say (about it)? He said: Why did you not bring it to me? He said: Glory be to Allah: Is if lawful for you and not lawful for me? He said: Yes, you doubt and I do not doubt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden an animal whose ear has been uprooted so much so that its hole appears (outwardly), and an animal whose horn has broken from the root, and an animal which has totally lost the sight of its eye, and an animal which is so thin and weak that it cannot go with the herd, and an animal with a broken leg. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2803)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not permissible in a vow (dedication) for a virgin, a widow, a leprosy patient, or a woman whose doctors are all male."
[Machine] "We used to be commanded by the companions of Muhammad ﷺ in battles. And we were in Fars, and the day of slaughter (referring to a specific battle) became difficult for us. So we used to take the elderly and the children by their trunks and ribs. Then a man from Muzaynah tribe stood up among us and said, 'We used to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and we faced a similar day. So we used to take the elderly and the children by their trunks and ribs.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'Indeed, the trunk fulfills what the rib fulfills.' This hadith is narrated by Ath-Thawri from Asim ibn Kulayb, and the companion mentioned in it is Mujashiq ibn Mas'ud As-Sulami."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Indeed, the trunk fulfills what it is meant to fulfill from it, just as the branches do." This is narrated by Shu'bah from 'Asim ibn Kulaib, and the Sahabi (Companion) is not mentioned.
[Machine] "When the companions of the Prophet ﷺ were one or two days before Eid al-Adha, they would give the two thighs and take the shoulder. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, the thighs suffice for what the shoulder suffices for.'"
[Machine] Narrated by Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Qurashi from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Qusayt, some of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ said, "I love to sacrifice a part of a lamb more than sacrificing an old goat." And they named Umm Salamah as the companion who uttered this statement.
[Machine] Narrated by Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , she said: "I love to sacrifice a young lamb more than sacrificing an old goat." And this hadith has been attributed to Abu Hurairah.
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The blood of Aafraa is more beloved to me than the blood of Sadaawayn.'" (Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summarization.)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The leg of a lamb is better than the back of a goat." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, with a scrawny lamb and a fat goat. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, which one is better? Should I sacrifice it?" The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, "Sacrifice the goat, for Allah is Rich and does not need anything."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم sent to Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas with a herd of sheep and he distributed it among his companions, and there remained a goat. So he sacrificed it during his Umrah.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two large, fat, salted, paired, and bleating rams. He slaughtered one of them and said, "O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and his ummah, from those who bear witness to Your Oneness, and bear witness to my Messengerhood." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed a horned, defectless ram with a black stomach, black feet and black around its eyes.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3128)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered a sheep that was tied at the place of prayer, then he said, "O Allah, this is on my behalf and on behalf of those who have not offered a sacrifice from my nation."
“My family started to put pressure on me after I came to know the Sunnah. People used to sacrifice one or two sheep, but now our neighbors call us stingy.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3148)
The Prophet ﷺ said: The best shroud is a lower garment and one which covers the whole body, and the best sacrifice is a horned ram. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3156)
[Machine] "I went out with Saad Al-Zurqai and he had companionship to buy sacrifices. He pointed to a ram with a muffled head, not the highest quality ram, and said, 'It is as if this is the ram that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for the people on the day of sacrifice, and when he finished his sermon and prayer, he slaughtered a sheep with his own hand and said, "In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is on my behalf and on behalf of those who have not sacrificed from my nation."
[Machine] The translation of the provided Arabic text into English is as follows: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered his sacrificial animal and then said, 'O Allah, this is on behalf of me and my ummah (community).'"
[Machine] From his grandfather Abdullah bin Hisham, who had witnessed the Prophet ﷺ , his mother Zainab bint Hameed took him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was young. The Prophet ﷺ wiped his head and prayed for him saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sacrifice one sheep on behalf of his entire family." All of these hadiths are authentic in terms of their chains of narrators regarding the permissibility of offering one sheep as a sacrifice on behalf of a group that is too numerous to count, contrary to those who assume that it is only permissible for an individual. There are narrations that indicate the permissibility of offering a sacrifice on behalf of the deceased as well.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me to offer a sacrifice on his behalf, and I will continue to offer a sacrifice on his behalf forever. (Using translation from Aḥmad 843)
Thauban, make his meat usable (for journey), and I continuously served him that until he arrived in Medina. (Using translation from Muslim 1975a)
[Machine] We slaughtered seventy camels in Hudaybiyah, one after another in groups of ten. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the cows also participate in the sacrifice."
"We were with the Mesenger of Allah on a journey, when the Day of Sacrifice came, so we shared a camel among ten men, and a cow among seven." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4392)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us on the two Eids to wear the best of what we can find, to apply the best fragrance we can find, to sacrifice the best of what we can find, seven (camels) for the cow and ten (camels) for the sheep, to express the takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) openly, and (he said) tranquility and dignity are upon us. If it were not for the ignorance of Ishaq ibn Buzurj, I would have ruled the authenticity of the hadith, were it not for the ignorance of Ishaq, I would have ruled its authenticity."
[Machine] "I was the seventh of seven companions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. We reached the time of Eid al-Adha and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to each contribute a silver coin. We bought a sacrificial animal for seven silver coins and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we have spent a lot on it.' He replied, 'The best sacrifices are the most expensive and fattest ones.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us, and a man held one leg, another held another leg, one man held a hand, another held the other hand, one man held a horn, and another held the other horn, and they slaughtered the animal and all of us joined in saying takbeer (Allahu Akbar). Uthman ibn Zafar is trustworthy."
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, indeed I have compassion for the sheep, so I hesitate to slaughter it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you show mercy to it, Allah will show mercy to you."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do you want to kill her? Should you not have sharpened your knife before putting her to sleep?"
“And certainly, the Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind).” [6:121] He said: “They used to say: ‘Whatever the Name of Allah has been mentioned over, do not eat it, and whatever the Name of Allah has not been mentioned over, eat it.’ Then Allah said: “Eat not of that over which Allah’s Name has not been pronounced.’” [6:121] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3173)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever has money and does not sacrifice, then our prayers should not be approached by him." And he said another time, "Whoever has the means and does not offer a sacrifice, then our prayers should not be approached by him."
[Machine] Indeed, an increase in confidence is acceptable, and Abu Abdurrahman al-Muqri is above confidence.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ he said, "Whoever wants to divide their wealth, they can do so, and whoever wants to keep it undivided, they are allowed to do so. And whoever wants to leave a will, they can do so, and whoever wants to not leave a will, they are allowed to do so. And when it comes to sheep, their sacrifice is obligatory."
O people of Medina, do not eat the flesh of sacrificed animals beyond three days. Ibn al-Muthanni said: Three days. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) complained to the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) that they had children and servants of theirs (to feed), whereupon he said: Eat, and feed others, and store, and make it a provision of food. (Using translation from Muslim 1973)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Eat from the sacrificial animals and store some for later."
